Yep, that's quite disappointing.
More magic AI autopilots, that work only when human pilots are not around...

Actually...he answered another question about launched fighters (which is a type of wingman) and there you will have the choice of AI control it piloting them yourself.

Okay, that's some good news on NPC AI then. :)

I don't do reddit so just responding to infos here.

the info in the OP did state the ai can pilot your ship... its not an npc tho ;)

I read that as an autopilot of sorts, while you were off doing stuff - like dismiss and recall in Horizons. What Tinman's post has implied is that you will be able to give some sort of more advanced orders to your launched ships. But, it could mean the same thing, reading back.

As for AI being against lore, it's not - it's only sentient AI that is outlawed, clever software is allowed. :)

its pretty obvious that FD are not going to bother much with Ai and NPC driven content, they may come back to it later, but for now its clear this isnt the game they are making any more, the writing was on the wall when Wings launched really.

Pretty much this - hopefully no content will be lost for the Solo players though, I struggle to get one of my friends online at the best of times let alone a whole 'crew'.

When they have the character creator done ti would be pretty silly of them not to even place dumb NPC's in the seats in your ship, basic looped animations etc. Else why bother, even in a place where you stand a chance of meeting other players and their AV's the whole fps thing dies on its feet unless there are NPC's, unless of course they intend to just release something like an arena first person shooter, like CQC, in which case the sooner they 'fess up the better and we can all move on :)

I expect multi crew is going to be great for 10 minutes then pointless as it confers no advantage and in fact a huge set of disadvantages, seriously not seeing the point of development at all if its just players, obviously I'm missing the point?

Hiring crew may come later.

is that something confirmed by FD in the AMA? if so that is something (though the "may" worries me) or are you just being optimistic?

ED was always going to be MP but I am hugely disappointed at how skewed all the content is towards it. My expectation** was that the game would support everything offered as MP options with an npc equivalent for those who wanted to play on their own.

**This failing could be argued to be on me, however not on FD, tho... that blasted DDF gave us little warning of the true direction of the game. FD could easily have cleared that one up months ago. The fact that they chose not too is unfortunate, and is no coincidence imo.

Hmm, no NPC crew.
Well that's a shame I was really looking forward to some sort of RPG element with the crew.
Not that I'm exactly sure what they would be doing - I guess that needs to be sorted out first and will come with the multi-crew thing.
Maybe later.. Maybe?
Please?..

Is it? I don't know how I'd feel about my T9's AI ramming itself into an asteroid whilst I try to defend it from pirates in my fighter. ;)

Just optimistic. And we know how well that's worked out before.

But to theory it out, it would seem a little strange not to implement it once they have all the game assets in place for walking round ships and stations. But maybe FD don't want them to sit there completely silently all the time, so I can see why they may not have wanted to include it in season 2. And I doubt season 3's features are locked down yet, so can imagine Braben wanting to avoid questions on it currently.

this brings a tear to my eye :( (the link admits this is speculative, but it sounds so so good!)

when I saw multicrew coming in horizons, this was what I hoped we were getting. I did have my doubts, but today it is confirmed, and the above link is why I am dissapointed.

for me personally implementing the above would have been bigger than planet landing.

Seems a bit odd. I mean I would love some kind of in depth mechanic for hiring crew members with progressively better skills which offered benefits to your ship. However I can understand that this is a big job and they perhaps have other prioities.

That said it doesn't seem like a big ask that when we get multi crew we can populate the flight deck of our ships with NPC's, even if they are just place holders. The universe already feels a bit sterile because the only other people you see are flying ships. Some other human on the ship would help that.

And while we're on this wishlist, would it kill FDev to put people sitting in the control towers in front of the landing pad? ;)

oh, and I wanna pony...

I do start to have trouble keeping optimism up a bit. At first it was no NPC Wings, yeah allright. No NPCs in CQC, I guess its a pvp arena shooter things, so okay why not. No NPCs in SRVs, uhm... guess its hard to programm. But still a damn shame. No NPCs Ship battles on Planets surface, oh... proabalby again hard to program... or something. No NPC Crewmates, god dammit it does not stop there keeps on coming more and more stuff locked away for solo players.

Only responding to info here without context is...not always wise... ;)

Perhaps, but on second thoughts the AI may simply be an autopilot/follow in which case my initial comment stands. DB's comment doesn't make it clear either way.
