News Horizons and 1.5 launch - Servers offline

My download has at least 9 hours left to go on steam, it's been downloading since about 4pm, my launcher gives me the option to install but when I tried this option previously, after the new launcher update earlier today, it keeps getting so far then encountering a problem and having to start again. I do not even have horizons so this is just for the 1.5 update. Is anyone else having a similar issue?

Ok, I have ED 64 bit, ED 32 bit, and EDH 64 bit.
I assume that EDH 64 bit, is both ED 64 bit and EDH 64 bit, and that is the one I use , is this correct?

Having been forced to go through this painful and slow 'upgrade' (I have not bought Horizons) I don't feel like playing now. All the fun has been drained away. I have only had this game for a month after paying a reasonable £29.99 and now to get the first update (of many) to Horizons is £49.99. So, they want nearly £80.00 for the complete game and expect customers to go through this awful process on a regular basis?? It's not happening!! I will write off the 29-99 as a bad buy and call it a day. Shame, as I used to play Elite II 25 years ago and loved it.

Sorry to hear you had issues with the upgrade - these upgrades tend to happen every few months and require some downtime to install.

I don't think that if you already own the main game, you have to pay 49.99 for Horizons. I think 49.99 is the price for Horizons beta and the normal version is £39.99, but as an owner of the main game you will get a discount as well to 29.99.

Also just in case you are not aware, Horizons is a whole season of expansions so there will be several further upgrades over the next year.

All that said, if you don't fancy Horizons you can still keep on playing the game without the Horizons content and it will still work fine.

They had to add steam option at the same time as FD client at 18:00GMT To avoid all this pain and furstration.

It's crazy, for all the chaos and panic it caused, so many people freaking out for hours before launch because they couldn't use Steam. Like the world was going to end.

And in the end the just put it on steam anyway :D Don't believe it..

I remember when Steam was first released when Half Life 2 came out. It took me 2 days just to download Steam on dial up and another 3 days to download HL2 because the servers were so screwed. That was in 2004, so it's nothing new.

I still dont have a clue whats going on.. it would have been nice to actually have a system that lets you know whats going on rather than having to trawl through forums.

ive updated the launcher, because the steam launcher stopped working.
i then updated through the new launcher, this still didnt let me play because servers were offline.
steam then started updating the game again, and then the steam launcher started working again.
now i have the steam launcher that says 'play' but the button doesnt work. i also have the other launcher which says update (again)

what version am i meant to have? where am i meant to launch from? why do i now have two launchers, neither of which work?

nb, i dont have horizons, im just vanilla ED

Okay start from the beginning, can you tell me what folders you have in this directory.... C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous\Products

Ok go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous\ and run EDlaunch so the launcher is outside of steam try running a product then.

since i have updated through the new launcher, both launchers seem to work.. can get rid of the non-steam launcher now? if i can find where the hell it ended up..

The new launcher will be here..

C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch

yeah, seems the steam one is launching properly now.. im still not sure why i had to
install a new launcher
update to 1.5 through new launcher
update to 1.5 through steam launcher
update to 1.5 through new launcher (again)

works on steam launcher now, doesnt appear to work with the new launcher.. so ive uninstalled it..

thx for the help

My game was updating from 18:00 to around 21:00. The last third of the update downloaded at like 0.4 mb/s due to the server overload.
I have now been playing for 4 hours in a row and man, it is really interesting! Heard a lot of complains about POI system from Beta players, but personally I like it. Yes, it can be tweaked here and there, but overall I think they did a solid job. The variation of POI seems solid aswell. I might be wrong, but it seems to me like they added some new types, or just balanced them. In the videos I watched from beta, it was almost always some wrecked ship. But I got several interesting types: small base with cargo and droids, one pirate base, some extraction sites... Pretty satisfied with that. Also the rendering system of planets seems okey to me. The ability to land on landports is very cool, I have now found really big one, almost the size of the one at Mercury. So all in all, very good expansion from my point of view. Lot of new content, more stuff to do and enjoy. The game now has a totally different sense of scale, when you are able to look at your ship from distance and see planets up close. Also the whole bunch of new mission types is very cool.

Looking forward what will come next, nice work Frontier, thank you for some really cool time-spender ;D
