Regarding where the UAs are coming from, an the Merope Mystery-
And the hint "Its right in front of your eye"
... got me thinking- maybe its a sentient, space faring GAS GIANT form of alien life? The UAs doo look like they are self buoyant gas giant cloud layer sort of device. -rather close to xenobiologist depictions of what gas giant advanced life may look like (rather hotair balloon-ey)

Looking at the wording, is the description saying that the "alien entities nicknamed "Large Barnacles"" are actually the Unidentified Artifacts, which we know are common in the shell around Merope now.
UA = Large Barnacles, common around Europe.
Meta-Alloys are associated with them.

So if this is a solid lead we can say the following is the thesis:
- barnacles produce UAs as "seeds"
- seeds are ejected, using some kind of jump-travel with an estimated maximum range of the zone around merope
- seeds where picked up there, transported in convoys and brought to human civilized space
- UAs sold in stations attach to them, draining them and feeding on their structure (as the do on the ship) (degradation as defense?)
- UAs can be attached to objects, to grow into barnacles, reproducing when 2 of them have grown (hermaphrodite)
- UAs may be attached to metallic asteroids, rocky bodies and metallic bodies.

There could be a big adult space barnacle in Merope.
I liked Irongut's post earlier about 49 Arietis being the location of all the Horizon hype livestreams. It was one of the first stations to go down after whereveritwas and is close to the bubble. So there could be baby space barnacles that have taken root on the planets there.
I need more onionhead
I'm afraid that due to complications stemming from extreme temperatures/pressures/winds more than likely any Gas Giant based life form would have to be small and very light to effectively float along with wind streams. Anything remotely hefty would probably go crashing toward the "surface" and cease to exist very rapidly. Still though at one point (I believe threadnaught 2 or 3) when we first got free floater UAs around the HR1185 system I had a crazy theory that somehow Gas Giants had something to do with the UA namely because most in those UA systems were either incorrectly classified or were anomalous in appearance given their class. Later I expanded it by targeting mostly the class IV and V planets which appear red/reddish and have high metal contents in addition to noting a lot of planets in UA systems have high metal contents.
Still think there is something to it somewhere but mostly settled for the high metal part.
Guessing around a planet orbiting the black hole? What are the stats on it I wonder?
The first Horizons beta led to Kalb B1BA as crash site to a ship...

There are several stars matching that, or the light type blue/white
a few HD systems with black holes.
