Horizons The SRV Sucks

It controls so bad you can't hope to actually shoot at anything.

The slightest bump on high G or low G planets sends it spinning out of control.

It certainly can't tank damage.

So the issue I'm having is how the heck am I supposed to do any of the Surface Missions where I need to get into a Penal colony or something, without just getting destroyed? I've tried this twice so far, first just trying to rush in and get to a data point (Which are very hard to spot when you're constantly being bombarded with weapons fire.) and scan it. This failed fairly quickly. Second, I tried a slower approach, trying to shoot everything before I got close to it. But, the moment I'm within shooting range of a defense turret, about seven flying things decide to come and destroy me. I can't drive away from them fast enough. I can't dodge the missiles because the handling is so poor. So what am I supposed to do?

Why does the SRV have absolutely no useful features other than letting you look at the pretty, albeit repetitive, landscapes of atmosphereless planets?

Is it just me? Because I can't imagine it being so. I can't see an area where I, personally, need to improve. The game is just screwing me over with a useless $60 SRV.

I don't know, maybe you suck at driving it?

Took a little getting used to, just like it took me a few minutes to figure out docking the ship. Try reworking your bindings or not hitting full throttle everywhere you go.

Just a mouse and keyboard.

I've messed with the controls to make it functional for everything minus combat. There doesn't seem to be a way to do that. It just handles too poorly, or slippery, which can be fun while exploring. And the turret is pointless because it's difficult to drive and shoot. There's no possible way to fend off several drones with the SRVs current mechanics.

It's not because of me using M+K. I can't even use a joystick for the starships, too inaccurate and slow. The M+K are far more precise.

BIG NOTE: It might not be you...however, if your bindings suck you limit your chances at playing well with the SRV. Set your bindings one at a time, test them each time you change, then change the next one.

First, if you remove pips from eng you will not have so much bouncy bounce....with the warning that no pips means no jumpy jump!

Second, slow down. If you are running over 10 m/sec (speed listing on your HUD), you are running to fast!

Third, you can 'mental link' to your turret. This gives you a way to fire in a much more 'loose' way..AND you can also drive your SRV simultaneously...so tank shooting FTW (Oh, see BIG NOTE!)

Finally, as you are checking your bindings, remember that it does make a difference to choose 'Axis' over 'Button'...basically, joysticks, HOTAS, and anything NOT a button enters as analog (anyone with a 360 type controller can help you with that...I use joystick and keyboard)

I spent most of the beta driving it for exploration. I am fairly familiar with my control set up and how to drive the vehicle proficiently. Only in combat does the handling of the vehicle make a big difference.

Yeah this is true...you have to learn to drive the bottom while you are free looking with the turret...a very different skill...however, if you can accomplish this (it really is doable...I have a friend who is amazing at this skill) you can run away forward while aiming as you look backwards!

FALSE

I use Joystick and KB and have fought off up to 4 sentries while circling them and picking up canisters.

My basic setup

WASD for digital control. W and S for full forward and full back (or to set speed in drive assist), A and D for full left and full right.

I use twist on the joystick for analog steering.
X-axis for roll when airborne
Y-axis for pitch

In turret mode, I use drive assist and the WASD keys to handle maneuvering and control the turret with x/y axis on the stick.

Maybe sticks you have used were cheap and bad because the one I use is quite precise and responsive.

EDIT: Also, the throttle on the stick, I use it as s secondary control for throttle. It works better than drive assist mode to just set my throttle at 75% as it applies an constant and even amount of force whereas drive assist will throttle up and throttle down to hit your target speed. When it throttles up quickly (after making a hard turn, for example) combined with digital control of steering it can send you into a spin out.

I actually quite like the handling - you can't just hit full throttle and go in, you need to continuously plan a route and use the terrain and structures to your advantage.

I used it exclusively from turret-view in beta as it provides an advantageous perspective. Now if they'd add turrets allowing for accurate aim, I might actually use one on the live server.

I find it quite enjoyable to drive once you realize you can't drive at 100% throttle all the time. Of course I have a HOTAS so that helps a lot I'm sure.

I'm using my pad to drive, just as I use it to fly, and personally I think the SRV controls pretty well. Of course it also depends on how much gravity you have and I guess driving on icy planets gives an another feel to the steering as well. But all in all, the driving is much more fun than I dared to expect.

I am trying to use my keyboard for driving and my mouse for the turret but the major problem I am having is with the throttle settings Is there some way to set a key to zero the throttle? because at the moment I can be cruising along and then want to stop so I press the S key a few times and I stop but then I start to accelerate again either forward or backward.

Went down a 6km high mountain at 1.6g's at -70degree inclination full speed mostly and didn't blow up. Hotas here.

You need practice.
