And with this I expand my Maia theory just a bit more...
UA points directly at the center of Merope....why? At the center of Merope (a star..) there is its core which is usually what is left over after a star ceases to exist over time. The possibilities that we know of are 1. a white dwarf, 2. a neturon star, 3. a black hole. The conditions that determine which of the three outcomes you get are pretty much known at this point and that is mainly one... Mass. The more massive the star the more likely it is to leave a black hole. Something over 2 solar masses is more than likely going to go supernova and leave a black hole..... like HR1185, and Maia B. Also Merope is a B star which are known to be some of the hottest and shortest lived stars. I've said before that there may be a chance that UA's are trying to indicate that Merope's day as a main sequence star are numbered and that we should be looking there for a catastrophic event. Palin may be looking at clues as to how the UA's are doing that by studying up a model system which features BOTH an active star of roughly the same age as Merope as well as Merope's most likely future state, Maia B.
That's of course in addition to all the nefarious things I alluded to earlier.
Remembering that Warkushanui was the first infected system, I went there to inspect some of the planets. We still don't know the reason why, so everything could be possible.
Two infected stations: one shut down. Nothing relevant found so far.
And
I've been in Maia B1 BA all yesterday. I suggest again to pay a visit to Maia B1 AA, AKA the Potato Moon. Worth it.
Finally caught up with this thread.. it moves way too fast.
The trailer appears to show barnacle type things and a kind of pyramid thing, and looking in the blackish background it appears to have fewer stars.
So my random thoughts:
Fewer stars could mean it is actually close to the edge, either closer to the outer arms, or up/down (if you look at the milky way like a wheel on its side).
Its in a nebula (Not necesarily Pleiades, how many nebulae are there?)
Its just due to the HDR adjustment based on the single sun light source position in the game (i.e. it could be almost anywhere, just cannot see the other stars for some reason)
Anyway,
I need to go back to refit (not happy with my current weapon loadout, drains capacitor too quick)
I've already been to maia and back a few times already... found a really stunning looking metal rich planet a couple of jumps out from maia, it had a greenish hue (almost looked like vegetation) with light sandish brown river channel like features, wish i'd taken screen shots. (It also seemed quite rich in molybdenum)
Guys I just had my first encounter with a UA ! Commander kicks helped me by that ! So thank you kicks
now I'm defenently sure its scentient and organic
also someone suggested to investigate the landable planets inside the UA shell so this is what I will do tomorrow
this my report of today's mission
and about merope ... Weeellll lets just say I've been searching the moons a lot but there is nothing to be found
my guess is the new CB is gonna be the next stage of the story
What if the "certain regions of space" refers to systems that have stations affected by the UAs, maybe searching on planets in such systems will uncover something.
Barnacles typically stick to ships. Particularly if left static, is my understanding. Correct me if I am wrong on this.
What if the UAs are seeds. They use the power from space stations to take root in a similar fashion to the WAU, a living computer in the horror game 'Soma'.
The barnacles are like flowers. They grow on the outside of the stations and eventually fly off into space, perhaps via the stations eventually exploding.
Further speculation still, what if Merope, Maia etc are star types needed to cultivate them?
Do we have to sacrifice Obsidian Orbital to the UAs?
I've just done a materials survey of Maia B1 AB. It has Ge, Zn, Cr, Cd, W and Y. Three of those Ge, Cd and Y are required for FSD injections. Clearly Palin has somewhere he wants to get to?
No, it's pretty clear. They can only be found, and only in space; they cannot be manufactured. Once you have found some you can machine it (cut it, grind it, etc).
The number of UA's required is still higher than what Jmanis has sold, and we could have underestimated the amount of player activity at the other stations...
or there is some other factor we have currently overlooked.
I doubt we've underestimated the number sold in Varati by that much. The estimates from other players/groups have also been much less than the 200 that Jmanis has sold. I don't think it's plausible 200 is below the threshold that triggers problems at a station; there must be another explanation (FD missed it somehow, or something about that station/system makes it immune).
If we're looking for these green dealies, I'd venture a guess that they are not going to be extremely rare POI's that you just end up stumbling across randomly in your SRV, but rather fairly regular occurrences; on the proper type of planetary body, and in the proper type of terrain (crater, former riverbed, former volcanic region, etc).
With that in mind, I'd suggest that when exploring moons and planets, if we find something of note, we should also note some additional info, such as:
Primary star type Planetoid / moon type and composition Surface temp Distance from star Type of terrain surrounding point of interest Noteworthy nearby stellar objects (black holes, earth-likes, whatever seems of note)
If we cast our net wide enough, hopefully it'll make finding any patterns all the easier when have enough data.
Do we know anything about Merope 3A? I've only just noticed you can't plot a route to it, and it's completely unlandable (as it currently stands). I'm right next to it at this current moment and my map still refuses to let me chart a course to it... I can lock it as a destination but that's about it.
Meropes systems data is buggy. One of the moons, not 3A, is all black in the systems map to me, I can still land on it and target it. It isn't in the Nav panel either

OK, so I deliberately avoided comment on the bunfight over the last 10-20 pages because I realised it was more about the Tx ship morse stuff being a bug, and some of the buns being tossed about had nothing to do with what I'd been posting. I'm not going to 'go back there' further, except to say that I still stick by everything in my last post, and contrary to what you might think, UA stuff wasn't the primary driver of it. But enough of that. Just remember that removing or ignoring the identity of self that a player builds in an RPG is one of the cardinal sins of an RPG. It's just a game sure, but this is one of the fundamentals of an RPG.
I saw some people ask in the course of discussion "Why hasn't Jmanis' station failed?".
I've thought long and hard about that one, without the emotion of my previous post. Some suggestions to date:
200 UAs isn't enough to trigger it Honestly, I'm calling this one debunked. Stations were failing well before people were considering selling *hundreds* of UAs. My opinion, 200 is more than enough, and there's many more people who were involved in selling them to failed stations <random forum posts> who seem to think even 50 is enough. Whatever the count, 200 is plenty.
A note about CGs and GalnetThe Galnet articles and CG I wrote both suggested the UA as hazardous, with things that could be gleaned based on the knowledge they cause station failures. Everything else could be almost completely decoupled from the UA storyline. Stepping handily aside from my emotions on the subject, this doesn't mean FD are ignoring what I write. It just doesn't fit with the universe.
It takes time to happen
Some of the station failures reported had UAs being sold after the initial reports, and failures occurring within a couple weeks. It's been almost 2 months since I began sales at my station, so it should've kicked in if that's the case.
There's something unique about where I sold I'm not going to regurgitate everything, but I actually did a lot of research in picking this station. I wanted somewhere
- Close, to make shipping large amounts of UA easy
- Close to other failures, to allow it to fit with UA canon
- Close warp-in point for safety
- No rare/unique items in that system
- An economy type that had failed
- A low population, in case quotas are based on population
- A star type that had already failed
For all I can see, this is "just a common backwater".
So,,, dun dun DUN. I'm going to throw this out here:
UA's alone do not cause station failures.
I'm using a bit of Occams razor here, but lets face it. Myself and many others like me have sold UAs to hidden stations, and nothings happened. I've now announced it, and nothing's happened. Now I like variety, so i did pick up a fair bit of salvage outside UAs in my travels, but I was far from conclusive. MB said himself:
The progression of story is primarily through things that we check via the server. I keep an eye on here as well to see what is being discussed as well, but that's not my primary source of information. I'm not going to comment on false avenues as that's for the player's to explore,
The suggestion of "false avenues" suggests some players are actually exploring false avenues. Since these checks are primarily done via a server, and I'd imagine the community team be very careful around UA stuff, and err on "No" rather than "I need to talk to people".
I think selling UAs is a false avenue. A catalyst perhaps, but not the cause. There's something else missing. Nothing else fits observations.
Is there a list, or something, of Regions that were permit locked pre 1.5/horizons? I have a feeling that one of those might be the certain region of space mentioned.
