The (argh!) that just doesn't make any sense thread.

Doesn't make sense:

Glide mode on planetary approach- pulling Gs enough to black out- while "coasting" down. Ship creaking and rattling in the freefall.

Cool as all heck and all.. but.. no atmo. (?)

Seeing this and going to scoop them up with your SRV and suddenly a bunch of Skimmers spawning 20 meters in front of you. It's hard to take ED entirely serious as a more realistic game when it's basic gameplay can be as arcade as possible. It's like flashbacks of going into a room in Doom to pick up a medkit just knowing the Imps are going to instantly spawn around you.

Authorities constantly patrolling outside space stations, obsessively scanning your cargo. Yet said scans are somehow abruptly terminated when you pass through the mail slot and into the area with on-site contacts for those same authorities (who apparently would never even think of scanning ships that are inside, and seem to be completely oblivious to the black markets operating within that station)...

Call it an extreme case of "not my job", but it still makes no sense.

I'm doing a rather long series of jumps from Pleides back to human space... in a FDL (I know- lousy jump range/fuel)

The route is more or less a straight series of hops... so why then- when I enter a system, is the next system in line almost always behind me?

Best thing so far for me: Right now i'm on one of the planets orbiting Vega. So i found a POI. Turns out to be some sort of bunker with a Data Point, guarded by some wanted Drones. Wanted, okay so theres some illegal stuff going on. Shot the Drones, all fine but then... I scan the Data Point while within the security area... and get a bounty for trespassing. Seriously?

Edit: Next POI, basically the same, two Buildings guarded by wanted Drones, this time with some Containers laying around. Shot the Drones and collected the Containers. Stayed again in the security area, but got just the "Security Systems activated" Message. Wut?

PowerPlay being hallowed as a "cold War" political takeover and "influencing" systems when one nations SENATOR takes a PRIVATE FLEET into another nations space and WAGE WAR to take over the system.

...And no political :):):):)storm or declarations of war is made from the other great nation about hostile takeover and creating warzones in their systems.

Like having the Governator take a private fleet of tanks and shoot up Quebec and annexing it to the US and Canada is ok with it.

I think it's probably lack of resource. Either that or would you dare counter-attack the Governator!? :D

The idea is that scanners get blocked by the bulkheads and force-fields around the station.
I'm with you on the whole Black Market dynamic. In the 'old' Frontier, the BB was the way to access the BM. This is like accessing the internet for things you shouldn't really be able to! ;)
Having it in the Contacts section makes it feel more like it's State Sanctioned.
.
And what happened to the Pilots Federation entry in Contacts? Have they been privatised, like the RAC, and no longer work for their members' interests?

That makes sense and it's what I always assumed, but if there's a local security office inside the station, why don't they also perform scans of the ships inside? They just sit there happily watching out the window while truckloads of contraband are being unloaded from my cargo bay... Or maybe all space stations are just wretched hives of scum and villiany. :)

Jeez how long have you got?
I'll just give you two:
.
1) Absurd manoeuvrability of big ships when they are scanning you..making it virtually impossible to get behind them before the scan finishes - I've done it a handful of times and I'm not even 100% sure how!..but when the actual combat starts, the AI revert to being useless, like they have just forgotten skills they were using 10 secs ago and hence getting on it's six is suddenly a piece of cake!
.
2)During interdiction chasing a ship towards a star..I get thrown out of the tether for getting too close to said ball of nuclear fusion, despite the fact that my target is much closer and seemingly unaffected and I still see him merrily flying towards the centre of the star as my interdiction is terminated!
.
Both really twist my melon (or if you are not acquainted with Happy Mondays tunes - annoy me), man

Another offender....

As per the Background Simulation goes, when two factions of similar type of Government fall into a conflict, instead of triggering a CIVIL WAR or a WAR, they will go to ELECTIONS instead. Makes sense, right?

Next thing you know, you are in a system that shows the following:

Controlling Faction: DICTATORSHIP
Challenging Faction: DICTATORSHIP

Current State for Both: ELECTIONS.

Right....'cause that's how dictators take power and square off with emerging rivals...

SRVs that have shields, which require nuclear power plants, but don't have unlimited drive.

Skimmers that have unlimited fuel. (can I have one?)

Stations freaking ages away from jump points don't pay extra for goods to attract traders.

We always survive ship destruction.

Exploration data isn't backed up into the escape pod.

Exploration data doesn't update the general map for other players.

Laser beams just stop at their listed range.

The cops don't shut down black markets, even though every one knows where they are

NPCs spawn based on player activities, when the galaxy is supposed to be living and breathing and doing its own thing.

Black holes 5 Ls from stars don't cause stars to change shape.

The pilot is invincible to weapons, even with no shields and canopy blown out

The HUD is projected by your suit, yet disappears when the canopy blows

We can't fly to other systems via super cruise

Why would an NPC miner go to a resource extraction point when they're all crawling with pirates?

How do NPCs get to RES and CZ? I don't see a steady stream of them in supercruise.

Why are there so many ships in USS all over the system? Wherever I go, there's one in front of me. Why don't these guys jump to supercruise and get to where they want?

Why do NPCs hang around nav points? Why even drop out of supercruise?

Why do we have nav beacons? Explorers don't use them, and travel fine.

Why does 1 t of gold take up the same space as 1 t of food?

Why can't the insurance excess be paid a few days after notifying your intention to make a claim?

How does the insurance company make money when we don't pay premiums?

Why don't we see red and blue shift at relativistic speeds? How can we see at all when travelling at over 1 c?

Why are all orbits circular?

Where are the comets?

Why do asteroid belts only have 5 rocks?

Where is the accretion disk around black holes?

Why haven't we found thargoids yet?
I think this is Sheldon Cooper... ;)

Chaff. Use it.

Remember in FE2/FFE where, if you jettisoned Slaves into space (or tried to transport them without a Cargo Bay Life Support fitted) they'd turn into Fertiliser?

There was also the rumour that if you did this in certain systems with, shall we say... a less than progressive attitude to law enforcement, they'd turn into Animal Meat instead.

Yes I always found great entertainment in that.

"The HUD is projected by your suit, yet disappears when the canopy blows"

This isn't true, I present my evidence..

Speed limits on ships rather than acceleration limits. IWAR2 in 2003 had no speed limits and didn't suffer for it, so why does ED need them?

No I don't mean speed limits around stations, they're fair enough, I mean in the deepest of deep space.

When you get four-shot destroyed by a cruel NPC you resurrect in the Last Station without your exploration data but with the minerals you have collected! How does that work?
