UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

No, how many? :D
no really, you missed my point. I am totally aware of that.
I was just replying to people complaining only after two days from launch, giving up, and start asking if these things are really in game before we waste our time.
It's fairly obvious that, without any hint, we could search forever, but hints will come for sure. In the meantime, we try to do our best to search in places coming from our deductions/discussions here in the thread.
To add some wood to the fire: there are SO MANY other things out there, already in game, we did not find yet. Some of them since day one.
Also for them, hints will come I'm sure because, sooner or later, FD wants us to find them.

So you've seen them in code (or just by looking at a file name), but are you sure it's possible to actually find one of these things in game? By just flying to correct place?
Maybe they are in the code, but are inactive and we can search whole galaxy, but wouldn't fine any.

If you tested one of this hidden things and was able to find one in the game through normal gameplay - then it's great and actually makes this game alive again for me.

I've been trying to pick up a meta alloys mission in the Ovid system. Tried several places but no dice. My feeling is that getting the mission triggers the poi spawn, like with other missions. I reckon it'll also be a dead end - just find a barnacle, shoot it a bit in your srv and hoover up the meta alloys, deliver, get money, next. But it needs looking into, so I'm looking into it. If I do get one, I will try the systems in the immediate vicinity first though.

Damn, can't rep you, sound reasoning. I think you're right, the mission will trigger the appearance of the POI.

This has been found on Maia A2A. 100%Metal rich planet just in front the Obsidian Orbital...

I saw this post on reddit. The guy didn't say he found it on the planet, it's just a picture of it ON the planet :)

Think I'll pop over and try that myself when I get home. The more the merrier, right? ;)

Exactly what I said yesterday. I've spent no less than 5 hours trying to spawn that Meta-Alloys mission to no avail... :(

I'm pretty sure "passenger cabins" are, or at least were listed in the game assets folder somewhere, they're not in the game yet!

Incidentally - Hi All :)

Been following this for a while now, quite interested in joining in the meta, I can't do anything physical at the moment as I'm on a bit of a exploration jaunt, somewhere out near ngc 7822 en-route to the farside, so I doubt I will be back for a couple of months yet. Unless I get bored. Or die.

Anyway, couple of things bother me about the barnacles/meta-alloys at the moment, not least the description in the commodities screen.

They are easily machined, but as yet cannot be manufactured, only found in space. They are associated with recently discovered alien entities nicknamed 'Large Barnacles' by interstellar explorers. These appear to be common in certain parts of space, although no-one is certain why.

Space = not planets?

Recently Discovered = UA's, surely? Nothing else discovered recently - either by canonn or NPC's reported on galnet?

Associated with = Produced by, or by interacting with, or as a by-product of?

Large Barnacles = There is a (very) passing similarity between the UA and a goose-neck barnacle but no-one as far as I'm aware has referred to them as that before 1.5/2/0

Common = Often occurring. Unless the right part of space just hasn't been found yet, surely this refers to the UA shell?

I think my other thoughts have all been covered previously in the thread, so I'll hush now. But I do think it is perhaps more obvious than it at first seems.

Also - any chance the "meta-alloys mission" might be bugged? I wonder if the "find x of x" is a procedurally generated mission and someone has forgotten to remove the flag for the meta-alloys from the algorithm that generates those missions.

Has anyone just realised that they display as "Canister: Unknown Artefact" instead of just "Unknown Artefact"? Perhaps what we're looking at isn't the artefact itself, but in fact the "box" that contains the artefact that we need to unlock somehow. We need a key to unlock it and find what's within, problem is we don't know what the "key" is.

Would fit in with the whole "before your eyes" thing.

Edit: This could also be linked with a riddle - "A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet a golden treasure inside is hid". The answer to this riddle is an Egg.

An egg that's waiting to be hatched.

If your observations are based on being in the SRV,
i guess that is normal.
To clarify if this is abnormal behaviour,
you should grab your ship, fly low and target the UA.

I think in the SRV every commodity is named Canister: XXX.

Just sharing thoughts:

"easily machined"

It's a soft metal, but not "gummy." Claimed that it is strong though, so they're talking about tensile strength there, not hardness, I would think. As hardness = not easy to machine.

"Can't be manufactured"

We don't know the chemistry/don't know what catalysts are required to complete the chemistry.

Great, are you suggesting all of our ships are now smeared in some kind of blue-hued space-semen?

Actually that would make sense it just happens to be caustic to metal. It could be meta alloys are one of the stages of development of the Barnacle as they have stages, just need to figure out how to mate them.

I am quite new to this whole UA endeavour, and I am currently ~135 Ly from merope and had a lot of UAs. What puzzled me now is that the UA I am now encountering is moving at around 7 m/s in direction of a nearby planet.

Was this already discovered ?

Anyway I will try to land on that planet and see what I might find.

Also - any chance the "meta-alloys mission" might be bugged? I wonder if the "find x of x" is a procedurally generated mission and someone has forgotten to remove the flag for the meta-alloys from the algorithm that generates those missions.

I wouldn't rule this out.

Usually I don't like to peek into someone else's code, unless it's a job I have to do. In this particular case it's also against EULA rules, but most because it spoils the fun in a moment.
So, no, I did not look in the code, I just opened a couple of folders, like I'm sure another hundreds people have done already ;)
I'll repeat myself, again: there is a trailer showing some new strange fascinating thing on some planet's surface. Barnacles, Barnicles, or Bornicles, I don't care. That thing is in the game, exactly like the UA in the wings trailer.
That said, someone is free to do whatever he likes.
For me the game is alive if I have something to find. For you is alive if someone else finds it. Different views of playing it seems :D

Long time lurker, has anyone compared the buy price of meta-materials at stations that have them listed to see where they are the lowest priced? As this might be closest to the source.

Great. If it's the one I left in HR 1185, please could you leave it there. It was a UA trap back in 1.3, and I suspect that's what caused them to spread out a bit to avoid it :D (removing it could very well mess up our ability to find more)...

Thanks. I shut down in HR1185 for the night... I guess that's why one of my ship's control panels suddenly exploded for no reason.
