Distant Worlds - A journey beyond the Abyss

Greetings again,

I think I've made my mind to try and take a part in the expedition. However it is likely that the beginning of January is going to be quite busy... so I am finishing putting together my starter Asp and will likely start towards the point early. As a very green explorer I could use getting some experience prior the long haul and will hopefully be able to rendezvous with the fleet somewhere along the route in one piece.

With this in mind - am I right that if I reach some place on the open server and then re-log into the private group I will be in the same location? What about the accumulated exploration data?

http://coriolis.io/outfit/asp/03A4D...i022i2f.Iw0gMlWbiQ==.Aw18WQ==?bn=Goodbye Kiss - is my intended fit, still in doubts about that heatsink...? I also wonder if I'd like at least some weaponry with me?
I guess I will figure out soon as I am planning to get a cheaper scoop first and making several Robigo runs to get enough cash for a 6A. And then onwards into space. May be will try to collect/scout for some FSD boosts on the way too. :)

Fly safe!
A.
You can switch between Open and Group at will, the exploration data is not affected. We're using a Group to make meeting up easier at the Waypoints.

As others have said, an A2 power plant will run the ship, that's what I'm taking. When travelling, switch off anything non-essential, so:
Cargo Hatch
Vehicle Hangar
AFMU
Shields
Power Distributor
Sensors

They can all be switched off for general exploration. For landings switch on the Hangar, Shields and Sensors. Leave the Cargo Hatch off pretty much permanently.

4D thrusters are OK, but be very careful landing on planets more than 1.5G

Ta for the advice,
I guess I will take the A2 plant then and will play with 4D vs 5D thrusters for landings. I can run 5D with the hangar offline, but it cuts quite some bit of the jump range so will have see how well I like the handling on D4s.
Should drop a note to Erimus/Kaii to join Kamzel. Always nicer to see some green beacons I guess.

Sure thing. You can add me if you like. CMDR name is the same as the one I use in the forums.

I actually did a landing on a 4G planet perfectly fine. It was my first landing as well. And that was with 4D Thrusters for the ASP.

I'm pretty sure I'm already friends with a lot of the roster, but if anyone wants to add me feel free! Sometimes, when out in the deep, it's comforting to see that yes indeed there are other commanders in space along with you.
Indeed it is advised to befriend as many rooster CMDRs as possible. It will help instancing in group events.
This beeing said, it wil be impossible to be 300+ in an instance, usually they keep 32 persons. Beeing winged is a golden rule, it helps instancing a lot.
Many explorers are lone wolves, I suggest everyone to give a look at wing video tutorial, understand what's wing beacon, and note where the 5 wing commands are located in your device. It will take 5 minutes and be really helpfull when expedition departs.

Oh crap, I just learned about something that is seriously going to impact my ability to play Elite come the beginning of February:

American Truck Simulator finally has an official release date of Feb 3rd, 2016.

Yeah, hah, I wonder if I can cannonball run it to Beagle before then so I'm sitting and waiting for the fleet, LOL! I'm gonna have to juggle my game time after the 3rd very studiously.

Well, we now know it can be done in 27 hours (well, more like 41 hours but still)

Off you go...;)

This is the build I plan on bringing for the Expedition. Is there anything to improve upon? Thanks for the feedback, I really do appreciate it as this will be my first exploration expedition and I'd rather not be sent packing a few days into it. One thing I did notice, with the lesser thrusters, landing on planets requires, finesse. Something I'll need to refine before we leave I've come to find.

Oh noooooo!

Hi commanders,

I'm relatively new to this game and especially exploration but I signed up for THE expedition!

I had a few questions to prepare myself best (I hope it's the right place to ask them).

For the ASP Explorer, is the 6A fuel scoop really indispensable for such expedition or would the 6B work fine?
Regarding the AMFU, I see many of you using one or two 3A (with 5D shields), I was thinking about using a 5B and 3D shields, what do you think?

Unfortunately the 6A fuel scoop and 5A AMFU are out of my budget. Currently I do bounty hunting in high RES but if you have other alternatives to be able to collect the money to buy those I'd be happy to follow your advices ;).

I think even the 6c would be more than ok, think the magic mark for scooping was somehwere around the <1 minute mark for a full tank.

Sure those a's are nice but they're for when you got nothing better to do with your money.

Coriolis is nice and all, but nothing replaces actually testing a fit, what's might be considered OK for me can be awesome for somebody else or completely maddening.

I would if possible take your ship in game and test it out by maybe just making a day trip, either to shapley 1 (waypoint 1) or a little further but still do able in a day, the California nebula it's just about 1k ly from the bubble with a great looking red nebula and neat planets to test landing on.
You might even find some undiscovered (as in untagged) systems that way, but they are considered well traveled spots.

Somewhat disagree about scoops, I used to think along similar lines but then when you try the A's you don't go back. There was a time when I thought the 6A was just insanely expensive and the B was more than enough. What can I tell you, I eventually did 150,000 ly in the Asp with a 6A and could never go back. Now on the 7A on the 'conda - something I would have considered utterly insane at one point. But you get enough money, you try it, you do a few thousand systems and suddenly it's not so insane at all anymore. Of course, a B will work just fine, but it's really a long trip and you'll scoop many times. It adds up. And you really feel the difference when topping up after a significant drain.

After doing a fair bit of exploring my rules of thumb on scoops are - always use your biggest internal for a scoop, and mount the best one you can afford. A 6B on the asp is fine piece of kit and will work fine on the expedition. However, there's still weeks before we take off - more than enough time to earn for a 6A without actually earning much on any single day. A single Robigo run could net you two of these with a properly set up Asp for the job. I just think that saying "eh, get a C" when a player can afford a B or better is wrong advice, tbh. It's a long, long, long trip that we have ahead.

Agreed on doing a shorter shakedown explo trip before DW, though. There's no substitute for experience.

Great, thanks for the advice guys.

I apologize for my ignorance, but what is a Robigo run?
Do you recommend bounty hunting in high RES for collecting money?

I'll definitely go for a trip before, such as the California nebula as mentioned or Bernard's loop.

Awwwww. I'll be your friend, if you don't mind being friends with an Englishman in exile in Scotland? :)

I'm an English woman in exile in Scotland and my Scottish husband is coming on the trip as well! We can make up the Scottish contingent, seeking out the windiest, wettest parts of the any Earth-like planets that we come across.
