UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

For whatever it's worth, I've started shipping UA's to Walker Survey again, since clearly UA's don't affect that station :p

I'm doing it with my secondary account, because they need some starting scratch so that I can pull this account into my homeworld and do the fighting and stuff when needed to conquer neighbouring systems, then use my main account (which has Horizons) to go exploring planets deep in the black (that way, when I get bored of exploring I can instantly switch to fighting again :) )

Like your plan, good luck CMDR.

Hi Riz - or... When the next thread comes along (which is looking reasonably soon ;) ) make sure you get the second post in :D

Yaffle typically has contacted Arc directly when the next thread is nigh - so we just need to make sure you get 'the nod' when that happens.

You are definitely a great candidate for this job, and it'll be of huge benefit to everyone - thanks, Riz

I might be able to help with that ;)

Okay, I know what my next course of investigation is. It may take some time though;

Once I'm home from work tonight (about 10pm) I am going to scour the ENTIRETY of the outside of Obsidian Orbital. My hypothesis is that if the UAs are causing station malfunction, and given WHAT a barnacle is, then I'm wondering if there will perhaps be a small barnacle-like growth on the outside of the station.

Now, in relation to station size, it will be tiny. So this will take a while to scour, but it's what I intend to do. I'll record the whole thing for posterity (making use of my youtube account if need be) but I won't upload anything unless there is actually something interesting to show.

Hope you all have a wonderful day while I'm working, waah! :)

Even if you find nothing I think it's a really good idea to check. I'd join you if I could.

Good luck commander!

Last night, the canonn intercepted a message to Ed Lewis.

Believed to be a puzzle, word quickly spread behind the scenes on our website. Thanks to Zenith who cracked the code within hours of its discovery. Shame that it was designed for Ed to solve :D we accidentally sent him the answer thinking we had won. Turns out, we spoiled a charity livestream event.

The event was planned to go live at 9am uk time, though we had all the clues collected by 4am uk time. Zenith guided Ed through the clues and the event was finished well before the alloted time.

A lot closer to where some of the trailer may have been set, the Nebulae are in the right setup and range, refining my search more next by using local background stars to align to the nebula as in the trailer.

not there yet, but close, star needs to align to the centre of the flame nebula next.Screenshot_0819.jpg

So that's what it ended up being? Canonn is more powerful than I could have possibly imagined ;) haha

Learning our lessons from the (very recent) past - perhaps someone should report the non-degradation of UAs dropped from SRVs as a bug?

Why should that be a bug?
SRVs are restricted to 2 tons of cargo, while ships aren't.
This is a remains of the cargo drop restriction on ships,
when they crashed the instances with dropping stuff frequently.

SRVs are not able to crash the instance, that is why the dropped stuff 'o 'em isn't degrading.

It wasn't so much "spoil" it. I was watching at 9AM when it started and held off on direct answers until Ed had had a chance himself. He got 2 locations himself, almost got the 3rd and had to be told the 4th.

Then the clues were only told when he either asked out or looked like he was floundering. He worked the answers out himself or with the community helping, but yeah I provided the next clue in short order as he finished one.
So it wasn't "told", as more like "guided".
I don't feel that I wiped out the section, but kept the pace going to fill out 30 minutes.

Has anyone shot up Pavlou Keep yet to see what it reveal's ? just getting itchy to do Something !

Its the only ground settlement... which doesnt really do anything...

Done more planets/moon POIs on poles & equators than I can count... my tinfoil is losing strength I fear :(

When I jettisoned the UA, it landed just like that!

Anyway, the video was just uploaded so it will be a few minutes until the quality goes up.

Can anyone proficient in UA-morse tell me what the thing is saying? It didn't scan my SRV when I jettisoned it.
Is anyone else intrigued by the way this UA is upright and spinning? Can this be replicated? Has anyone else seen it happen? Most of the UA on the surface pics I've seen they've just been laying on their side.

The UAs point to the star in Merope, so what if you drop them on a planet surface with the Merope star directly overhead? Do they align like this? If that works it opens up all new testing avenues for dropping multiples, different configurations, etc.

Oh I agree, completely - it's exactly why cargo from SRVs doesn't degrade: absolutely right :)

The question is whether UA degradation after being carried in a ship is specifically a feature of the UA that has an explanation inside the game rather than a meta-explanation that makes no sense unless you see it as a game.

The suggestion from MB was that the degradation was 'a feature' of the UA. Now, granted: that's vague enough to mean it's a feature it inherits from 'just another cargo item'; but it could also mean that there's an in-game (I.e. story-based) explanation for why UAs degrade after having been dropped from a ship (which there isn't for other cargo).

If there is, then not degrading after being dropped from an SRV might be significant.

That said - if you report it as a bug, and the response is 'by design', then it succeeds in telling us nothing!

I need a rest!

Personally I think it looked like we were a little bit closer to the nebula in the trailer than you are there, it actually seemed considerably close and this is something I've been trying to work out and it makes no sense. Right now I'm thinking it's nothing since the place we see the nebula in the trailer is a civilized planet. I guess I'm just not expecting to find this think in civilized space. There's also the matter of being shown two more nebulas just before the clip we're all chasing after. One shows the blue-ish nebula and then with the crashed ship in the background we catch a glimpse of barnards loop again but it's very hidden and it doesn't appear to show any other features we could use to discern a location.

I'm not trying to say don't follow the lead, you may well be onto something. Just that it's also very hard to discern if the locations shown are related in any way or even remotely close to each other.

There's however something I was going to ask a couple days ago. Something that's never happened to me before happened out between that blue-ish nebula and barnards loop. When it happened I was already charging my framshift and I only realized what the message was saying as I reached witch space but whilst out there I used my unlimited range ADS between jumps as I always do to map out the galaxy, except as I was charging and after the ADS had registered objects I was treated to a new message which said scan data corrupted, pleas try again. Is this normal? I've been covering around 3000ly per day and never encountered that message until that system. I wanted to go back but it was too late, it was a jump that could have been up to 29ly and all the systems shared very similar names. In hindsight I wish I'd taken note of which system Iw as left in after the jump in case this is not normal behaviour.

I am fairly certain I had this happening sometime this spring. Anyone else?

Why CMDRs you don't start using EDDiscovery? It keeps track of every system you visit, just enabling verbose logging in the AppConfig file.
In this way, you can always know where you've been ;)
It should be mandatory for any explorer.
