UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

I landed on Musca Dark Region HM-V c2-37.
This is a very strange signal (and audio too).
Cargo, Sensor and POI in one.

Edit:

Edit2:
Broken cargo?
Has anyone found something like this before?

Came across a wreck yesterday with only 3 salvageable containers; at least 2 others were damaged/destroyed. Strange things do seem to happen with the wavescanner.

If UAs dont degrade on surfaces, which im not sure if that was a bug or whatever as i havent tested it... has anyone tried dropping it and leaving it for extended periods of time? Hours? Would be intensely boring as i am guessing theyd despawn if you left, but following the seed idea... perhaps after some time theyd root into the surface? Or maybe whenever one is left and "despawned" a "barnacle poi" is acticated on the surface?

The seed theory sounds good... explains them falling towards planets. And maybe they are pointing AWAY from merope, as though traveling out from there to seed planets? Maybe what we are searching for in merope is in fact the origin. Perhaps the scans the UAs perform as part of them selecting a suitable place to be planted?

/crazy

Learning our lessons from the (very recent) past - perhaps someone should report the non-degradation of UAs dropped from SRVs as a bug?

Someone else will have to confirm, but I seem to remember reading in the thread recently about that behaviour being observed.

Edit: Meaning, someone else posted about seeing that behaviour and wondering if it was a bug or intended.

I think that's a big, breaking problem with this "mystery."

Every time anyone discovers anything that might be relevant, we have to stop and ask the Dev team if it's a bug or intentional.

I've been exploring with my SRV near the shell, having fun figuring out how the scanner works, but I've come across a weird signal that doesn't lead to anything. The signal gets stronger and more compact as I get closer, as I expect, and then suddenly it's gone with nothing to show for it. I tried circling around, looking for anything of interest, but it's just a bare patch of nothing.

Has anyone else encountered signals like this? I've attached a picture of the spot and signal on the scanner:

If anyone is interested, I also recorded a bit of the sound that signal made. It sounded very radio-static like, fading in and out of strength:

Are these normal? Someone said something about UAs underground and it made me wonder... Is a barnacle going to sprout there?

Location: MOROWARI A 8 (-28.3501;90.5619)

Have UAs been spotted here before? Or is this just too far out?

Yeah, I have these anomolies.

To me it appears to be simulating interference generated by signals bouncing off of rocks. (I noticed them more near the edges of craters/bumps in the landscape). Also if you look at the scanner there is a faint signal about two thirds of the way up. That band usually indicates a POI, so I would suspect in that case there is a POI just slightly off to the NNW (if the SRV is facing N) in the distance, and the anomoly is the signal bouncing off of the rock you can see.

Well, thats my guess.

Well, as a test I went back to the spot where I got the signal the first time. This time I parked my ship nearby, whereas before I drove from the nearby base.

Still there. A blank spot of nothing that gives off that weird signal.

Debug-cam shot of the spot:

Something underground? I'll have to come back at a later date to see if anything has changed.

Bug report it.

Something about a christmas carol...

Tinfoil your head before reading this:
Just heard a song on ED Christmas live - about UAs and their ''strange noises coming from underground''?!

Just bringing these two together.

Anjin, if you can, please mark that location with the signal if you haven't already.

When we get planetary mining....

The UA was degrading when I jettisoned it from the ship, but it stopped once I scooped it with the SRV and jettisoned from that. This is most likely a bug :-/

Those signals (vertical bars instead of the normal readings) are just very very distant signals. The full-ish bars means its artificial, a crash site or some cargo.

Each pitch up is a scan along a plane- a "slice" of the sphere you need to sweep the targeting sight all around. After doing a full circle, the 5 degree or so yaw to the left, followed by another pitch spin, is a slice at a different angle, do it enough times, using the galaxy plane as a lineup mark each time you spin, and you will eventually complete an entire spherical scan. no need to do a full 360 degree of slices, just 180, because the tilt covers bolt sides as you scan.

This sounds very similar to some star-identification software some of my colleagues were working on to help a lost satellite determine its position.

I just realised that they have updated the stats page...

Judging by the amount of time I have spent in game (even after having a couple of months away from the game between 1.3 and 1.4), I can only wonder what the stats from some of the people who frequent this thread have accumulated.

Hey Commanders,

no exciting findings in here, just a little story of a brave *cough* commander scared to death by the UA mystery...

I'm following this UA stuff from the beginning with great interest but never got involved much, just too many other things to do.
But since things finally seem to shapen up with Merope and Palin and stuff, i thought "hey, get your stuff together now and kick some alien ass!".
So i pulled my ASP out of its garage, fitted everything it could handle and headed for Maia/Obsidian Station.

A couple jumps later i arrived and docked, and instantly blamed and cursed everybody (including me) for not finishing the CG, leaving us here without outfitting and shipyard.. damn us all! (but it would be awesome if there would be CGs for upgrading stations!)
Well, i quickly left again and jumped over to Merope. Unfortunatly, it was already pretty late and i needed sleep, so i just headed down to the first planet, too tired to take notice of anything, landed somewhere and logged off.

I hadn't had time to play for 2 days, until yesterday evening and i was totally excited and in the mood of exploring everything and finding something amazing!
So i started Elite, it loaded, and then.. don't know what happened.. i was sitting there in my little ASP on that planet. Looking at a vast, alien landscape in front of me, illuminated by that cold, green-bluish sun, making everything look threatening and fearsome. I couldn't do anything except staring at it.
Some large cliffs lurking menacingly from the right and down the hill in front of me, a huge and deep crater, the remains of nature's try to destroy this evil place.
Then there was this strange music, which sounded like it could come direcly from a thouands ly away alien radiostation.
Just eveything here was so unpleasing and unfamiliar.

I suddenly felt so small and vulnerable and got the shivers everywhere.

What if just right now, in that very moment, the Thargoids were coming, materializing with there fleet right in front of me?
Or suddenly something would jump on me and attack me from out of nowhere?
No, no, no, this is not my place!
I am not supposed to be here!
No one is supposed to be here!
Just run, while you still can..

Well, and that's what i did. I powered my thrusters to 500% and left that goddamn place, the system, the nebula and fled back into the middle of the bubble (probably settled a new speed world record here ;)) and it was such a great relief... but I am sure i have heard some devilish laughing during my hyperjumps!

Don't know why this happened.. have explored a lot before and rarely got homesick on my journeys.. but maybe that's the power of Horizons ;)
Nevertheless, it was amazing and i guess i will make another try this weekend, maybe i get at least down in my SRV this time!

So, good luck to all you brave commanders out there, hope you will do better than me, or we are all lost...

Cheers,
Cmd Bishopp

Isn't that an outcrop/meteorite/mineral right there under your crosshairs? target and shoot it for materials that may be what you scanned.

saw this as well with that signal you follow it for a while then you go forward a few more metres and it disappears, reverse and it's back I reported it as a bug

its not a bug. I find those kinds of signals all the time.
Follow them until they fade away, keep heading in that general direction and you should see a faint signal pop up and it will become a normal reading.
From my testing the vertical bars are just there to show you the direction of distant signals.

That sounds to me like the sound on the wave scanner when something is too far away.

If you follow that far enough it should turn into a sound u recognize...or it gas for me in the past.

'ello my lovelies. I'm bumbling about in Space again this evening.

Any idea which systems near Merope are good for finding UAs? I've been out there for about an hour now, randomly searching for SSSs and I'm not finding anything. The few times they have turned up they have just been a Type 9 being escorted by 2 Anacondas. No Local convoy chat though so I've been ignoring them. I have no Cargo scanner and Obsidian doesn't have outfitting.
