Theory: Could UA's be used to find Meta Alloys? Supposedly if you drop them in the right place they will start moving in a direction. What if you just followed them? What if you drop it on a planet? Can it... walk? or something?

take the meta alloy missions , collect a UA and then land on a planet ?

You almost make it sound easy. I already got the first part done.

That's because it is easy. It's incredibly easy to find a UA now. All you need to do is find a system between 130-150 light years from Merope, and drop into a strong signal source. Seriously, I found a UA on my first attempt.

So, that's part two.

Part three only requires that you own Horizons. So pick any land-able planet that you like.

My Meta-Alloys mission expired few moments ago, just when I was deeply searching INSIDE the deep misty canyons of ARIEL, the awesome moon of Uranus.
There's something inside those Canyons, hidden amongst the huge mist, and the very hard terrain. I've spotted a few POIs in the deepest parts of these Canyons, where only the SRV could reach them. I was not able to reach them, then my mission expired. But the SRV wave scanner was full of some peculiar signals, very hard to reach.
I really suggest to someone who has the mission still active, to throw himself inside those canyons, where the visibility is close to zero.

Think: the Barnacles could be so close we just could not imagine it. Inside our solar system: hidden in the mists of Ariel.

Even if you don't find anything relevant, Ariel is still the best looking moon I've seen so far. And I've already seen a lot of them. Trust me.
Just the view is worth a trip.

i still have 17 hours or so on mine, im on the surface of Ariel now, yes its a very interesting place :)

You did follow them and check them out? Or did they disappear?
Now that sounds intriguing, but it doesn't make sense if so.

You can still check the peculiar signals, right?

Quick repeat question: How far out have you seen planetary bases?

I have not been further out than 1200-1300 ly from Sol, and I still see them occasionally.

Don't have the Sol permit... which I'd guess I'd need?

However, what you say is interesting, because I was looking at the trailer again last night and thinking that it was definitely a dark and misty location, so I guess cold required for the vapours and deep canyons to provide darkness. Not sure about Ice Worlds though as the ground looked more "rocky". Anyway, I shall leave this hot metal world and search for deep cold chasms...

Well, after I get the dents out of the landing gear...

When you say planetary base - are you talking about fixed bases ... or POI bases ?

I think the POI base types show up everywhere ... there was some talk of immersion breaking POIs showing up all over the Galaxy ...

I think the fixed location bases would only be in systems with population :)

correct currently fixed bases only show in population centers ( the alternative is player supporting minor factions and those minor factions expanding) but fdev is years off fixing the background sim, so it will be community goals that will make it happen.

I'm in Sol right now with 1d still left on the mission timer. Will check that planet out.

What were you flying? Will a Viper do to land on that terrain or should I better swap for a Sidey?

Random replies:

I was flying a DBX. It's very hard to find a landing spot inside those deep craters, and very hard to see through the mist.
After landing, the POIs where always hidden in the middle of some very hard to climb rocky formations, in some cases I was not able to climb them properly, even using the SRV boost. I wasn't able to find them, I mean. But the scanner was mad about signals. Could really have been just outcrops or Mesosiderites, but I'm very able to read the scanner, to understand what it's detecting.
BTW, the mission expired, and my game crashed few moments later, so I went to bed, being very late.

Could be really nothing, but those misty canyons are the deepest and haziest I've ever seen: A very good place to hide something, IMHO ;)

ARIEL is the most similar moon to the one you see in the home screen of the game, so far.

I'm thinking of fixed bases that you can target from space. From time to time they can be found quite far out. I don't know if they are all manned or if some are automated.

RNG POIs are all over I think.

Random, crazy thought, and only really half-serious - you know how we can transfer cargo from the SRV - what if we can transfer it to other things as well?

What if you can 'install' a UA into something already on a planet and it starts making Meta-Alloys?

Back to 'reality'...

Given the knowledge of a 'barnacle' scenario planet-side, that idea is total rubbish - we just need to keep plugging away scouring planets till someone gets the magic POI.

Assuming what we saw in the trailer is related to the Barnacles, there's an undeniable similarity with the markings on the UA, so I'll take a long punt and say they're definitely related somehow.

If we all just keep at it, someone will have a moment similar to when the first convoy was found - and we all know how rare they were! :)

Do we have any coordinates for these canyons? So we can keep looking?

Interesting - I dont know - just assumed fixed bases had population of some kind - will keep an eye out tho

Well... Sol is a real nightmare for outfitting... I swapped for a Sidey to gain more landing opportunities in Ariel's canyons, but I'm flying out with basically all stock but the thrusters and having to power manage. Sol sure is not going to be a home base for me...

Ya the barnacle ua tie looks good - I just hope we dont have to have both the mission and be looking in the right place for the stars to align.

Im keep some ship om kushen blalock terminal, is just 2 jump away from sol, and there is a good choice of setup.

I found one on HD 25308 1a, at 1249 ly from Sol. This is the furthest out I have been in Horizons.

I have not visited the base yet. It's not a port with landing bays, so I guess it will be quite hostile.
