Just HOW does ED have such a wonderful community?

The median age of players in this game is roughly 35 to 40, and there are a lot of 50+ players as well. Regardless of folks proclivity towards PvE or PvP, ultimately the community loves the game, and most will help new players out.

Saying this, the community is schizophrenic at some very basic levels which leads to some interesting forum PvP moments.

only when the blue and yellow pills are not taken at the right time is there any danger of a schizophrenic break...normally we are calm...if not drooling a bit...and have a slightly glazed look....its probably the yellow one...

On a serious note...most of us ar probably in the 30-50 range...some maybe even higher...personally I'm sub 50 still...if not just barely and as many state mostly we try and be helpful...there are occasions where you might see someone post about getting ate up by "griefers" or something and well a pretty heated debate tends to break out...and not to sound age discriminatory but..it always makes me wonder how old those types are...most of the 20+ that enjoy PVP and or hunting players tend to be...less caustic??...most are respectful...I often wonder if its the sub 20+...kids tend to love that lack of respect thing....but over all we tend to be well adjusted.

You will see negative...what some think the game should be....what they believe FD should do....that's more a sign of the gaming community today...everyone has opinions...some just voice them louder...don't get me wrong...us older folks get very opinionated and always have a viewpoint...we just tend to make the statements less abrasively...most of the time...depends on whether we had coffee yet, if our joints are aching, etc, etc....glad you are here...we do have a lot of good folks on the forums though...friendly and sometimes grumpy...cept them 30ish folks...they are always happy...in the prime of their lives...no worries...everything still works...Noctover...sir!! you cut me deeply " I am not age superior" you get our age and see how superior you feel...the aches the pains, the creaking and popping, not to mention the old war wounds that throb...ya whippersnapper...just no respect fer us old grumpy guys :) he is rather pleasant though...even when he's cutting his elders...sigh...kids these days...well back in my day...we had to play games in the snow...with a stick....and pretend we had electricity....:)

Cheers...just a bit of fun Noctover...I should give ya a bit of rep for it...but I seem to have misplaced my reading glasses...would you be kind enough to help me find em....

Fly safe everyone...see ya out there.

I'm quite young here and i'm only a teenager, but I actually like the fact that the majority of people here are from the friendly UK and are in fully-grown adulthood, thus it maintains a superior level of maturity, politeness and overall people somehow actually not wanting to start arguments because they have nothing else better to do. Quite frankly, iv'e noticed Canadian and European communities are significantly more friendly than Western communities. I like the way arguments don't end with victims getting their accounts suspended, but instead making up about it and go sod off with 'em to chug down some cold pints at the pub! :p

Id help ya find them but i can't find my zimmer frame so I'm sofa-bound!

Im 29, imo the best age to be! Why? Because I'm not old yet but i was young enough to grow up in the days of Libraries, tree houses, knocking on friends doors to ask if they wanted to play rather than texting, living in the non-selfie age, having video games as the occasional fun-time when it rains, floppy disks, the feeling of sheer joy when i woke up one morning and channel 4 worked with inspector gadget just starting, the summers were hot, the winters had snow, i could do something stupid without being on youtube 2 hours later, learning to online game on a 33.6k modem making me a current day god amongst gaming men! Etc etc. Id hate to be growing up in todays world I've gotta be honest!

I shall give you some +Rep, gives me something to do until my stair lift arrives ;).

51 here, soon to be 52 if I don't have another stroke over immersion breaking gameplay. Played since 1984 when I was 20, been waiting for Elite Dangerous and Horizons for years. Love it to bits. Fall asleep dreaming of some nubile Imperial Slave gently kissing me all over and wake up to find the dog licking my face. Fall asleep in my gamers chair on the way to Hutton Orbital. Sometimes I even remember to put clothes on. Good job I'm using a desktop and not a laptop. Not exactly God's gift here you know, even if I do tell my wife she married a hunk. Always happy to offer help and advice, even when the help and advice is 180 degrees wrong. Love smuggling and bounty hunting. Do the occasional trading too. Now with planetary landings I can pull off those high g manoevres seen in Firefly and Serenity.

im only 35 myself but i have to say gta v for me is the pinnacle of gaming....a living breathing city that has working transport systems and all that....i used to dream of games becoming that as a kid on my speccy....gta series is the one throughout my 30 years of gaming that has taking more of my gaming time than any other games, closely followed by elder scrolls series.

gta v with a steering wheel and vr headset is the most virtual real life experience one could ask for

Oh don't get me wrong it is a masterpiece, but being shot by 10yos laughing at you gets old sometimes. Their new adversary mode is freaking awesome. I was discussing it with another gamer that if GTAV had been released back then with what it has now we would have all exploded lol.

Most people seem to be able to distinguish a person from a subject for the most part which seems to also contribute. Combined with ED not being your typical game as it requires a big amount of patience I think the two combined makes a nice fundament for a good community!

I've been around here for almost a month now, I've read a dozen threads here and talked to a number of people both in-game and the forums and it simply baffles me how friendly and helpful everyone is. I've played a bunch of multiplayer games in my time and up until now I was under the strong impression that every community has it's douchebags, but it simply does not seem to apply to Elite: Dangerous and my mind just can't even comprehend it. One thing I've come to understand is that Frontier definitely seems to have a strict policy against any negative behavior, but taking some examples I've seen before in consideration I'd say there's only so much the developers can do about it so it feels like there's some higher power at work here. Are space sims really THAT complicated that they turn all of the FPS and MOBA kids away?

I mean this may seem like a strange question, but I'm genuinely intrigued by this. I think if there's a legit reason to this then perhaps it could be used as an example to improve other gaming communities as well.

Needless to say this is a lovely community to be a part of :)

I'm afraid you'll find your fair share of idiots and douchebags here too. They usually take one of the following forms...

1. "The game is broken because it doesn't work exactly how I want it to. If FD don't fix it yesterday I'm never playing again <stomp stomp>".
2. "The game is too easy and boring now that I have 100 billion cr and all the ships. If FD don't fix it yesterday I'm never playing again <stomp stomp>" (perhaps gotten all that because of earlier imbalances but those are glossed over).
3. "The game is too hard. If FD don't fix it yesterday I'm never playing again <stomp stomp>"
4. "The game is boring, I want all the things Eve Online has but I don't want to play Eve Online. If FD don't fix it yesterday I'm never playing again <stomp stomp>".
5. "Supercruise is boring and pointless. Why should it take any time to travel billions and billions of miles from point A to point B. I demand instant gratification at all times. If FD don't fix it yesterday I'm never playing again <stomp stomp>"

I'm sure fellow commanders who roll their eyes when they see the above can add to it very easily.

I don't think it's the age thing, or the scientific thing, or any of that. I played a game regularly before coming here that had a similar demographic. It was very PvP oriented and allowed a lot of P2W. You'd be surprised how immature players can behave given the right mix of ingredients. That game had about as toxic an atmosphere as it could possibly get at times.

The reason? You log onto that game on your server, and you would see the same people all the time. PvP was inescapable. Someone would lose and someone would win. Over time, the trash talk would escalate into insults, and insults into accusations and so on.. anyone who has played this type of mmo knows this.

Here, the galaxy is so big that you rarely see the same player twice, much less often enough to build up animosity. Unless you frequent the high population spots, or CGs etc.

Also, it's so easy to avoid players entirely if you so wish.

I do love the ED community. :)

Any community is shaped by its most outspoken members. While it certainly seems to be true that the ED community is more adult-leaning than many others, the more important thing I think is that the more adult tone they have set is still the one that carries the day. Newcomers are more likely to adapt to civil ways because people want to fit in, and civility is the culture we present here.

The important thing to remember here is that all culture is active and malleable, so be sure to do your part to keep the civil tone the status-quo. :)

This also applies to all other aspects of culture, online or not. If you want civility, behave civilly. It will spread, even if ever so slightly.

^^^ jupp. I'm under the impression that folks here can discuss a topic without getting personal. "Your idea sucks" is not interpreted as "you suck". Of course, saying the idea sucks is less offensive in the 1st place.
Fly safe CMDRs.

It's not perfect but you are correct the standard is much higher than some other forums.

My personal feelings:
-It's quite well moderated and there are a lot of helpful people. This means a lot of the rage and criticism gets combated with "I agree with points X and Y but you are wrong because of Z" instead of on some other forums where negative opinions are either deleted instantly or devolved into personal attacks.

-As others have said the age is a bit higher on average, mostly more mature arguments and views.

-Again as others have said a lot of the "silly" people who don't research what they are buying rage on steam forums instead.

-FDev do their best to listen to the userbase and take suggestions on-board, they don't agree with everything but there is feedback when they find the time. (Go community team! :D)

-Mostly, however, I think it's because Elite requires a lot of investment to get into properly and therefore a lot of the stupidity that other forums have to deal with only pops up occasionally and briefly.

Combine all of the above and half of the annoyed folk (phrased for lack of better word) realise that constructive criticism and suggestions are the way forward instead of attacks and rages/rants. The other half leave quickly or don't appear to begin with.

Also, I think it's next to impossible to see the Milky Way spread out before you in all its glory, gape in wonder at the raging inferno of a star, glide by planets and moons by the hundreds, and then really be angry about anything. :)

Actually, I think I'd credit that to the moderators here. They're pretty quick to jump on a thread that's getting heated, and maintain enough distance to understand that no discussion is important enough to allow it to create a bad atmosphere. Forums are particularly vulnerable to misunderstandings. Sometimes how something sounds in your head, does not come across the same once it's written down. Mix that with a platform where people are often debating the "truth" of opinions, and it can become quite volatile. This forum is no different in that regard to any other. I've seen plenty of discussions here devolve into flared tempers and raised blood-pressures. I'm very appreciative of the way they close threads temporarily, and somehow know just the right amount of time to leave them closed so that everyone can cool down.

Top job Mods... pat yourselves on the back...

I think a big part of the Elite fan-base is generally an older crowd that really doesn't have time for that kind of silliness. There's always a contingent of folks that resemble the ones you're talking about, there's always "that guy" in every crowd. There's a lot of older guys/gals playing Elite that played the original series, I'm sure there is even an over representation of I.T. folk in that group. You'll still see some of the usual forum poop fights from time to time, and every patch still brings out the tired old, "You ruined X to fix Y", but all in all it is a great group of people.
