Wooo Meta-Alloys 3 confirmed!
Right now I'm really torn between where to be looking, I feel the UA shell is a good idea, or Maia/Merope. I find it hard to believe it would be in some other new place unless we have completely missed some clue about where, or it is close enough to the human bubble, and spawns are common enough in the right area of space to enable someone to stumble across it.
Also I was reading back over the Meta-Alloys description, it has been said somewhat before but I thought I'd reiterate the only bits that I really feel can be taken from the description.
"They are cellular in nature, and formed organically"
"They are associated with recently discovered alien entities nicknamed 'Large Barnacles' by interstellar explorers"
From I would say it confirms that the Meta-Alloys are a part of the Large Barnacles, some kind of skin/shell perhaps. I have seen some other theories about what they are in relation to them and I know this theory is already the most accepted one but just confirming from the text that is what is implied. Being organic and related to a living thing implies being part of the thing.
Also the "by interstellar explorers" is relevant in that it implies they are definitely outside the bubble. I also feel that depending on how you look at it it could support or refute them being in Maia/Merope area. On one hand interstellar explorers could have been mapping out the area before Obsidian Orbial was built and found them (fits with the "recently discovered") or that area could be considered not worth exploring as much now because it is no longer uninhabited and "new" grounds of explorers to travel. I personally think the first fits best however.
"They are good thermal insulators, and have a high melting point"
Based on the previous thoughts, since Meta-Alloys seem to be the skin/shell of the Barnacles, a most likely living alien entity, simple evolution would suggest that the only reason it would be good for thermal insulation and a specifically mentioned high melting point would be because they live somewhere hot, so perhaps hot planets are what we are looking for. Thankfully the system map provides temperatures in kelvin for each planet that has been scanned so we can check likely planets though that.
I think these are some pretty decent clues. The first idea about Maia/Merope is admittedly just theory but I feel the last one is pretty obvious.
The whole way the description of the stuff is worded feels like it's trying to give clues as to the location without actually giving anything away, and the timing between this stuffs discovery and Obsidian Orbital being built seems too good to be coincidence.
