Is Elite Dangerous a Dad's Game Played mainly by "non-gamers"?

I would use the term Arcade - and we have that with CQC, ED is the simulation.

I would not want to see in-game gimmicks such as extra boost, weapons etc in ED.

Star Wars Battlefront is an example of how not to do it on many levels but it does have good and interesting planet surfaces which ED must be able to do?

The game is just lacking interaction with AI's and players its a bit sterile at the moment and needs a more storyline around missions, interaction with the people giving the missions, joint missions with players and more of a campaign story to follow.

I think it's played by many different types of gamers.
I think some people here that spend far more time telling people off and that their opinion is wrong and everything is awesome than they play the game though. I know what category they fall into but it's not polite to point it out.

Yes, it is a 'dads' game, and no one under the age of 30 should be allowed to play it :D

More realistically, I think it appeals to us older folks for 2 main reasons:
1. We played the 1984 original as kids/teenagers/youngsters and we are recapturing that awesome feeling we all got back then.
2. The choice to play at whatever pace suits us, alone, with friends, or in open play as and when we feel like it.

This is really a good statement...I'm 46...so guess I fit the dad gamer...played all the originals...and though this one can seem like a dad game I suppose...it does offer visceral moments...as it should...PVP..hmm..well that goes back more to the threads of pve vs pvp...the game has pvp abilities but was not built to be strictly pvp...thus those that don't want that element shouldn't have to be forced into it...nuff said there...personally...it doesn't bother me...and I happen to know of a firm number of at least 200 other 40 plus guys that pvp doesn't bother and they partake in it avidly...me I deal with it as I am forced to...some smuck pulling me out of SC looking to bother me or whatever....be fine if they said something like drop your load...but being that I don't fly cargo...its not for that purpose...so times like those...its just a target...win loose or draw it aint a big thing...part of the game...if I don't want to be bothered with it I could drop to Mobius or solo...depends on the mood and my social inclination on that day...lately I predominately play in open...all that said...I am unsure the OP was making references to the environment or if it was made about the pacing...the pacing can be pretty slow if you are mining or trading I suppose...combat well that's pretty fast paced...I don't recall a time I took my time in a fight...Dad gamer...wow...I just like games...some not as much as others...played and play a lot of different titles...WoT and WoS ,gw2, EQ, and a few others never...WoW, SWTOR, Terra, EVE, NWO,STO...yeah...Fallout series, Arena series (skyrim, daggerfall, arena, morrowind, etc) yup, along with CoD, BF3 and heck a lot of others....basically if its something I like or looks good at the time I give her a try...if I don't like it...it gets shelved...ED is a space sim...these I enjoy...being that its pretty much the only one out ...and I liked the others...I play it...there are a few older ones out...some decent but also limited...story is done and well you don't have much to do or you start over...here...well its more my story...I do what I want...as the game expands I have more to do...or more of what I want to do...Dads, grampa's 2 cents...cheers all

To the OP. I, actually, think that catering to "dad" population is a good thing. We are the ones with disposable income of some consequence. We will not go all out on a rig with three GTX980, but can comfortably afford a decent computer, the game, peripherals and extras. A lot of games are striving to get to the adult population and failing miserably. Why do you think Game of Tanks is that ridiculously profitable? If ED can attract younger population and still maintain "dads" in the fold, it is doing well. From personal experience, I was a heavy gamer up until maybe 5 years ago. Right now I just do not have time to spend on several games, plus ED is time-consuming. I do play other games, but mainly the choice ones I like - The Witcher series being one of them. I skipped the Fallout 4.

So far I enjoy the game. Some quirks aside (asinine number of missions needed for rank progression being one) it hits the spot as long as one understands that it is an open world game without a narrative. Move at your own pace, wander aimlessly or set the goals - exactly what I want.

BTW, I did sort of go all out for ED. I have a water-cooled desktop in Cosmos II case, two 27" monitors, custom built by myself gaming chair with HOTAS, Track IR and two additional tablets for controls and information.

Old dadgamer!
Not a dad
Oh sorry, old gamer!
I'm not old, I'm 37!
I couldn't just say Gamer.
You could call me Dennis.
I didn't know you were called Dennis.
Well, you didn't bother to find out, now did you?
Well I did say sorry about the ...
What I object to is you treating me like an inferiour.
Well, I am a gamer.
Oh gamer eh, very nice, and how did you become that? Exploiting the developers by hanging on to outdated imperialist gamerism which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society!

And I'm 43 really :)

Ziggy all this time I just thought you were Ziggy...now its Dennis...well damn...pleasure to meet ya...Ed...yup Ed...just like in the Sig...I know very impressive naming imagination ...love your post always good to see em...and uhh just an aside...I'm sure no one will look...its ok to be 43...got ya beat by 3...but man oh man the history of games we have seen....though the wife keeps telling me that I really need to grow up...video games are a complete waste of time...I keep telling her...do I come home drunk??? do you see wasted money in empty bottles??? how many times have I been to jail for assault???...gaming is a perfectly valid way to get rid of stress and aggressive tendancies...I'm a bloody saint :D....I don't think she bought it though...something about "HOW" she agreed that has me second guessing it...but it really sounded good at the time...

Oh god ... Belgen! I can see them across the border! Spying on us!

This 45 year old dadgamer ran a gaming community for 10 years, played competitively in COD leagues and Ladders. Still plays BF4 and keeps at the top of the scoreboard, grew up with Elite and the isometric Fallout series. I play Military sims Including ArmA, Flight sims including DCS Blackshark, I still build my own PC's and consider myself an experienced FPS gamer. Just because you become a Dad and grow old doesn't suddenly turn you into some one game vegetable, the reflexes might get a bit slower but I can still get accused of hacking just because I consistently hand some young whippersnapper his ass : )

This is the impression I get and I think it's a big problem for ED. Or at least, deciding what it is, gamer's game or dad game will be key to deciding it's success. Indeed, the devs may come under pressure from gamers to make it more gamery, or rather "less of a game, more 'real', action packed etc", which may put the "dadfolk" off it! I'm not sure there's that much crossover between the two communities (though I'd say I am one) and trying to please both can be tricky.

Who are the dadfolk? No set type but "non-gamer", in term of the breadth of their experience even if they spend all God's hours playing their games. The dadgamer player base also has a higher than average "settled down, middle aged" contingent who game whilst "the wife" does what ever it is women get up to. Many of the things that attract the dadfolk: the routine, the regular flow of events, non-too challenging combat etc, are what will put off the gamers and vice versa. And if any of my friends are reading this, yes! I mean you! Like many players of other dadgames like World of Tanks and Warships (also dadgames) many players play those games only and nothing else, which seems to be the case with ED... Indeed, for many, one of the last games they played seriously before ED was the original Elite of yesteryear.

Come to think of it, ED was one of the few other games I have heard WoWS and WoT players talk about playing. In a way one of the reason for the enthusiastic support such games get from some of their devotees comes from the inexperience of their players. They think the game is the best thing since sliced bread, but don't have that much to compare it against. Not that this makes them bad games and or the players bad people. I have played my dadgames for many hours but in the very small sample of players I know, it seems to be the way things are.

That's not to say that dadgames are a small or invalid market, World of Tanks turns over more than $300 mil anually I believe, for example and there are plenty of other examples.

I should also say that I am not young myself. Old enough to be a dad, granddad and technically a great grand dad for a few years now, but I'd still class myself as a gamer, though I am in a sense caught between the two camps. I enjoy dadgames but also like the occasional gamergame, and recently played: Witcher 3, Dark Souls, Cities Skylines, Fallout 4. There's nothing wrong with dadgames, I play them quite a lot. I only have 1 t10 tank in WoT, the IS7, but I have it!

I'd be interested to know what other games people play or have played, if any and no judgement if not, and in conjunction with this, what you think of ED. Or rather, how much you like it. No judgements, more research material! :p You could also mention your age. I am not saying mine! Yes, I am expecting a roasting over this post. Give it your best shot! :D

Almost 2am here, and I was quite tired at the start of the evening, hope that makes sense!

I don't know how you got your impression. I have not that impression at all after several months of playing every day, several hours a day.

This seems to be a pretty extreme example of the dadgamer mentality, even though he looks quite young.

Why dont you just admit your whole 'dadgamer' concept is a brainfart and you just use it as a term to disqualify everyone who disagrees with you? I'm no dad, am barely out of college, have extensive experience with 'hardcore' gaming, have been gaming since I was four years old, been modding games for over fifteen years (heck, the first 'Morrowind mod of the month' was by me) and I've been admin for UbiSoft (may they burn in hell :p). I am the exact opposite of your idea of 'dadgamer', even when I ignore the internal inconsistency and self-contradictions when you talk about it.

You're just an old dude who likes to play computer games. Some older gamers are like you, some are not. Some younger gamers are like you, some are not. You'd assume that anyone who has lived on this planet for any period of time would be able to grasp that concept without too much difficulty. Trust me, people can have different opinions and tastes than you do without you having to disqualify their very ability to even form an opinion because they are supposedly 'inexperienced' and have 'nothing to compare it to'. I find that obnoxious, ignorant and offensive, and I am not even the 'kind of people' you're aiming at.

YEAH!! What he said...though I haven't played with blackshark for a while....or DCS world....slower reflexes maybe...just means we make the shots we can make count more lol...good post my friend.

I have succesfully infiltrated their ranks, currently spying on them from the heartlands of Mechelen. I have to admit, their friendliness is only matched by their ability to brew beer. :D

Hallo! Veel plezier je te kennen!

Mijn neederlands is niet zeer goed! :p
It's better than that of some Dutch Belgians, trust me.
