Is Elite Dangerous a Dad's Game Played mainly by "non-gamers"?

i couldn't have put it better myself..

so if the anti pvp sentiment comes from personal experience (that is experience, not inexperience) again i ask, how can that be considered naive??

Because (again) to expect ED to be any different to any other MP is naive. You don't often read anti PvP posts on the Battlefield forums for example, the fact that every other day there are posts berating how PvP is "not how its intended" or complaining that a human cmdr has simply interdicted a player and killed them without explanation suggest that there are people who are inexperienced in MP games.

Man, I SO understand?

I mean, School, they turn that into sgool... I mean... GOD THE HORROR!!!

Well, lets see...

I'm a hardcore gamer, PvP games usually, 20 years now of that online. Doom, Doom 2, which don't really count as online per se since that was in the days of direct modem to modem connections, followed by Descent and then real online gaming with MechWarrior 2 and Quake. Followed by Quake 2, Unreal, Tribes and so on, up to Battlefield and Call of Duty games, mainly PC but some console(CoD, Destiny, BF3/4). I also played the original Elite when I was in college in the mid/late 80s, along with Bards Tale and many other games, and various MUDs and such on BBS's back in the late 80s and early 90s. I've also spent countless hours playing MMOs like UO, EQ, WoW, and so on, because I enjoy MORE than just PvP, sometimes a good story is a nice change of pace, so there's games like The Witcher series and the like.

I love Elite because I can do whatever the hell I feel like doing whenever I feel like doing it. Exploration is my main thing really, I spend time in the bubble doing missions and hauling freight around to afford to be able to spend a few months at a time out in the Black. I was fully aware that this game wasn't a PvP game before I bought it, I'm good with that, I've got PvP games galore, so that's not a big deal. I CAN PvP in Elite if I want, I've done it, it's ok but it's not a PvP designed game, so there's little attraction there for me.

I'm a dad and a granddad, my grandson just got Elite Dangerous from me along with an XBOne to play it on(was going to get him a PC, saw what he was looking at on my daughter's laptop, kid got an XBOne and no more access to the laptop). I'm going to be reaching out to some of the PvP groups to see if they can take him under their wing and teach the kid how to play the game as PvP is something he likes. He knows that Elite isn't designed for PvP, he's watched me play it quite a bit, understands why it's not a great PvP game, probably because he's watched me and his dad play so many PvP games, we're both extremely competitive and belong to top ranked groups. He still wants to do it, mainly because he wants to be a pirate like his grandpa, makes me so proud :)

So, I'm not really sure what you were going for with the original post, because quite a few of us old timers are also hardcore PvPers, we just don't see much point in doing that in Elite Dangerous as it's literally not designed for it, it's simply not prohibited. We happen to like MORE than just PvP, look on any real hardcore gamer's PC or console, you'll find more than just PvP games almost without fail, and Elite Dangerous gives us that something else we crave in a video game.

Old dadgamer!
Not a dad
Oh sorry, old gamer!
I'm not old, I'm 37!
I couldn't just say Gamer.
You could call me Dennis.
I didn't know you were called Dennis.
Well, you didn't bother to find out, now did you?
Well I did say sorry about the ...
What I object to is you treating me like an inferiour.
Well, I am a gamer.
Oh gamer eh, very nice, and how did you become that? Exploiting the developers by hanging on to outdated imperialist gamerism which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society!

And I'm 43 really :)

Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme military power just because some watery tart threw an Anaconda at you.

yeah it was silly of me to say "this game is exclusively populated by robots who all think alike". Oh wait I didn't but yanno, this thread may be changing my mind.

i said you boiled it down into 2 groups, and never once mentioned robots, but please feel free to put words in my mouth.

I generalised and expressly said that I was both gamer and dadgamer, so ... hmmm. Are you saying you don't like classifications or generalisations. Not that the idea of "gaming culture" isn't an arbitrary, generalised classification at all ... seperate in some way from broader culture or society ... oh wait, yes it is!

i have no issue with classification, but it does have to be relevant and meaningful, of which your classifications were neither, especially as you attempted to shoehorn the entire gaming culture into 2 distinct groups, and then placed yourself in both groups.. meaningful, relevant.. yeah, im not seeing seeing it. as for 'gaming culture' being something separate from broader culture or society.. totally agree, but seeing as that was never part of this discussion, i really fail to see the relevance in you mentioning it.

No, you did that in this crude pastiche of what I was saying you just created so you can easily demolish it.

erm, no.. that was actually my 1st thought when reading the OP, i genuinely didnt think anyone could be so obtuse as to generalise something as diverse and colourful into something so black and white.

Apostrophes! Without it can't becomes cant, "hypocritical and sanctimonious talk, typically of a moral, religious, or political nature."

Ah, my mistake. Cant it is, though not from me!

oh this, lol, really, ok

Conda's aren't hard, really.
Well, once you got a few of them, or mixed with other big daddies... THAT is a whole different fairytale, ainnit?

Heavy gamer here, no dad.

I like a variety of games including this one.
I feel like it offers quite a unique gaming experience.

Could do with more a bigger variety of things to do though but I'm patient :)

I had my wife, back in the beginning, I was playing some game I forgot about, saying to me: "I never get to see you, I never get to talk to you..." well, you get the point.
On which I responded: "Girl, you're married to a bloody hero that's about to save humanity. What else do you want? You should be bloody proud of me."
I showed her what I was doing how that game worked, and got her a PC with, indeed, that game...
Sold immediately.
Never had an issue eversince. XD

No, he said: the fact that anyone is surprised (about this) screams...

that i understand Sal, but anti pvp sentiment isnt just confined to those who try open expecting something different. the majority are fully aware of what pvp is and choose solo or group from the get go. i do wish folks would be more explicit about what they mean. as an example there are +16K commanders in mobius.. is he suggesting that all those players choosing to forgo pvp because they don't like it, started out in open play with no idea what pvp was or thinking it would be any different in this game??

I feel that ED is exactly what you make it and I believe there is ample evidence to support this in the above posts.

I object to being pigeonholed, yes I'm an older gamer but I damn well earned it! I also earned the right to stand on my front lawn in my underpants waving my fist at passing people and dribbling down my vest, damn it I earned it I tells ya!

Are you suggesting that I am suggesting that everyone is naive, or just the people that appear naive by being surprised about how PvP plays out? Its important that you clarify this, I feel you have missed the point.

I'm in compete agreement with you my friend...couldn't say it better...and not gonna try....by the way...we upgraded our lawn chairs...had a damn hard time getting the ammonia and nitrates for our lawn...someone thought we were gonna build a bomb in the stations....so we contracted out some traders of no small skill in acquiring hard to get things...lawn looks absolutely lush now...only took 500 tons of ammonia and 250 of nitrates....plus one buddy :D

Point out where I said the whole of gaming was in 2 groups? Haven't I already mentioned casual gamers as being a separate distinct classification which overlaps with both dad and gamer gamers? You're not having an argument about what I actually said ... or rather, you've made an incorrect assumption about what I said, ignoring important information I provided.

I did not say "dadgamers intersects gamergamers" was an empty set. In fact, I specifically said I was both. LOL.

It's worse than you think, Opie. This is an Aunt game. Of course, Auntie Sam has been gaming since Pong, studies MMO theory for fun, and has some very (very!) minor gaming publication/dev credits. But you know, books, covers, judging and stuff.
