Oculus pre order information

Hey everyone,

With the news that Oculus are starting pre order of their consumer version tomorrow, I wanted to just make a quick post to confirm that we are still actively working with Oculus but currently the only SDK we are able to officially support is 0.6.

We wanted to make sure you had as much up to date information as possible and will let you know as soon as we have any more information.

Fly safe, Commanders!

I too would like FD to elaborate on this statement. I have 16 hrs to decide whether to order a CV1 or not and ED is a major factor in this decision. (I am still on 0.5/ 8.1 for this reason).

Without stating FDs clear commitment to the CV1, the statement, as it is, seems to be warning ED players not to pre-order the CV1.

I guess that confirms that Oculus didn't send you the new developer kit then... which in turn means it's more than likely that Elite won't be Oculus ready for release (and probably not before the Vive hits retail). Shame really, as everyone loses.

There is no new DevKit. The Oculus team stated that they will not release a new DevKit beyond the DK2 until the CV1 releases.

Please at least tell me that you'll continue to support SDK 0.5-0.6 after CV1 launch, and up to the point at which it is fully supported...?

Oculus have already been sending early runs of the CV1 to developers, I think that's what he meant.

Q. Does OR actually sell Elite Licenses to its player base and generate revenue for FD?
Q. Does "Steam" sell Elite Licenses and generate revenue for FD?
Q. Has Steam partnered with HTC & Vive as its preferred VR technology?
Q. Could there possibly be any correlation between Steam & Vive and the lack of support effort for OR?

I have no idea what influences FD's development strategies and emphasis; but channel-sales and revenues play a big part in these matters (in my direct experience of software sales in other industries).

Thanks for some feedback, but this is very ambiguous.
I'm glad to hear fd and oculus are still working together, and there has not been an total breakdown between you.
As sdk1.0 is not on general release, you would not be expected to support it yet. But the big question is, will you?
If I was going to try and interpret this message, I would lean towards it meaning that sdk1.0 will not be supported. That there is no change in FD's position, but there is a possibility of support for subsequent updates.
Can you clarify any further?
If you can't (or won't) tell us the answer to this yet, will there be more details to come soon?

"As much up to date information as possible". No possible date or timeline for the official 1.0 SDK support has me a bit worried.

The CV1 will be in peoples hands within 3 months, most likely sooner than later. It would be a shame if ED missed the boat as go to VR experience, like it was for DK2.

That is exactly how I took it. Until they make a concrete statement about support for sdk 1.0 and thus direct mode, I will be holding off.

I don't understand how people are disappointed about the lack of support for a product that's not even out yet.

Pre-orders != Release

It is not that it is not supported yet it is that the noises from FD are less than encouraging as to how likely it is to be supported any time soon.

0.7 and 0.8 released and FD said no support until 1.0 is accessible to them and that there were unfixable issues with the new sdk
During that time vive (also not out yet) became the posterchild for all things vr in ED and the rift is never mentioned.
Sure the safe option is hold off on the pre order and wait and see... However this may mean missing out on a free game and also missing the 1st batch of head sets.

Sure FD say they are in contact with oculus but they have been saying that since 0.7. It would be nice to know how they are doing, whether or not the blockers with 0.7 are now fixed with 1.0 and its just a tweaking thing or if nothing has changed and they are at the same point as 4 months ago
I am 80% sure it will be fine but its a big gamble for an expensive paper weight if not.

Is it not obvious? I think you are being deliberately obtuse.
People are interested in whether they will be able to play Ed with the new equipment. Are they likely to be able to play from release, or at a certain period later, or never.
They would like this information before committing to a significant expense.
I hope this has helped enlighten you.

It's not the lack of support. It's the lack of any useful information on that possibility. Essentially, the message from op is telling us absolutely nothing new, nor hints at what will be.

Very disappointed in this, I feel duped in getting Horizons because it added SteamVR support, but this sounds like it will be only temporary and the support will be pulled in the near future. Is there a way to get a refund if SteamVR is no longer supported?

Just adding a "me too" here. I bought ED to play it in VR - the earlier reviews of DK2 posted online are one of the key reasons why I am here as a customer.

I intend to pre-order Oculus Rift tomorrow, as I want to get my hands on this new hardware as soon as possible - and I will be extremely disappointed in Frontier if they do not put in the effort to be there, at launch time, supporting a platform that can show off ED to it's best.

Considering that DB made a comment only a few days ago that Rift and Vive would be given comparable features and performance, this recent post seems to simply say "no progress", and expect us to be happy. A less charitable read would be to see this as deliberately trying to scare people off of buying OR tomorrow... hardly good partner behaviour.

watching with interest...

I can't shake the suspicion that the EVE Valkyrie bundled deal is responsible for whacking OR developer support for other space games.

Yes of course it is. ED got a lot of coverage about being VR from the ground up and has been wowing the crowds everywhere it went. Can't be having that after all there's money to be made. You need to take the cream off the top first lock in the early adopters. HTC actually make a really interesting point on cameras which follows with Microsoft hollowlens and a possibly much more vercitile device.

Don't go getting a strop on folks this all needs another six months to bottom out. Pre orders might mean deliveries in three months who knows.

All the hot air here is for ni reason other than the kids are just over excited. You can't blame them really. But it still remains illogical.

The odd thing also is the HTC device is technically superior which puzzles me why the fuss.

Eve Valkrye here I come screw ED if they don't want to tell us anything. This will be the last dollar they get from me and probably many others. You help support this outfit and this is the thanks you get some quote?

If you're going to use one for other games then order one. I will wait and study the specifications, then read the reviews before parting with any money. Whatever I get will have to work on a whole swathe of stuff, not just ED.

Oh. FD do talk to us. It's just, they never tell us anything and what they tell us, they maintain their right to renege on.

This is so very disappointing. I feel mislead by Frontier. This game has been marketed with Official Oculus Rift support from the beginning, and now they don't know when they will have compatibility with the Official Product? Unacceptable.

Seems like there was some kind of falling out and everything changed after that. Hopefully everything is worked out before I get my hands on the CV1.
