From the description of the meta-alloys commodity which is new with 2.0, they're alien entities nicknamed "Large Barnacles" by intersteller explorers.

We don't know. We haven't found them yet, but they are mentioned in the Meta-Alloy commodity description.

As was foreseen,
Barnacles in the nebulae.
Like the mussle in the tide.
I wonder if that counts for Nebulae containing a single system aswell.

If the myth thing was inspiration,
Merope serves purpose (connection to Sysiphos) regarding the massive task of "combing" the planets,
as does Alkyone, she was wife to Poseidon, god of sea.
