Rift Higher Price than Expected? $600

I also do not agree that the Vive WILL be more expensive than the Rift. No one knows what it will cost. All that's been said is that it would be more expensive than the Rift but this was when OVR were crowing that it would cost around $350 not $775/£530. So no one knows, you might be right and you might be wrong, just stop posting things you don't actually know just to justify the price of the CV1 to yourself.

Was that directed at me? If so then I'm getting a CV1 for free so it's zero cost and nothing to justify. Even if I wasn't getting a freebie I'd still buy it at £529 though. As ever there are opinions on whether the overall experience of VR outweighs the resolution - you come down on one side (I'm sure with many people) and many others come down on the other. And there are opinions on cost. I'm trying to reason it, rather than justify it. Maybe I'm naive but I do believe Oculus when they say they're not making any money on the hardware at this stage. *shrug*

The Vive WILL be more expensive than the CV1 though! ;) Again, I used IMHO to make sure people understood it was an opinion and not a statement of fact but some people can't read proper! :D

No, why were your ears burning?
It was just in general.

I went ahead and ordered it.
but I have to say its to expensive especially for something that will be out dated in no time cos Nvidia is working on a system that calculates per eye.
that is one gpu per eye.
something the current version of the oculus is probably not prepared for.
this might be the thing why I have to cancel the order.
but I have until may to decide this...

If you don't know how rendering for VR works, then you should ask instead of using your completely misunderstood 'information' to make a purchase.

As for the price - Guys this thing screams high quality. From the foam and fabric to the plastic and smooth operation of the ball joint for the headphones - you can tell a lot of money went to make this. I don't even want to begin to imagine what it took to manufacture the lenses in bulk.
Apparently it's really pricy .. more so than we thought

Guys guys. You will get plenty of notice before they ship your Oculus, going on my experiences with them for DK1 and DK2. You get a couple of emails and they check that your payment and delivery details are still correct first and then once all that's confirmed they process. They dont just move your order forward and process it sneakily.

Just a warning for those who are expecting notification of shipping: Palmer Luckey said this in the Reddit AMA.

We’ll be removing fraudulent pre-orders as we go. No plan to notify users other than your Rift arriving on your doorstep earlier than expected.

Erm,looks like he was talking about being notified that you have been moved up on the list due to fraudulent preorders been taken out, not about being notified about shipping itself. Everyone relax again.

How would you be notified about shipping but somehow not know it's shipping early? Especially when he says that your notification will be that it shows up on your doorstep?

Has anyone found a way to get an ETA for shipment date? I added one to my basket when it said March, however then 20 minutes passed while the site went doo la li and i dont recal seeing a date when my order finally went through (was just pleased it had been completed).

Checked the order and there is no mention of guesstimate ETA... but then if they are working on theory a % of the orders wont be 'real' maybe they dont really know themselves?

Just read the AMA bit that you linked. Someone asked specifically if you would be notified if your order had been moved up on the list due to fraud.
You get notifed when your order is about to ship or at least thats what they did before with the dev kits (You got an email that your order had been 'updated' and you verified your details with the link given, then about a week later you got the 'your order has been shipped' email).

But I could be wrong of course and you're right they might just fire the orders out as soon as they're ready this time round.

Oculus is going through the orders and removing fraudulent orders (I assume these are orders that are not linked to real people or credit card accounts).
Some people are moved up in estimated shipping dates due to the removal of these fraudulent orders.

My DK2 has mainly gathered dust these last few months as there is naff all to play on it and what there is isn't brilliant. ED's probably the best of the bunch and if you know my opinions on ED then you'd know how crap that is.

Shouldn't have bought a "developer kit" then - the clue is in the name. I've been churning out VR test apps in Unity and all sorts with it - having a blast.

From the support website:

Shipping notifications

  • You will be notified via email when we charge your payment method for the full price.
  • You will receive another email with a tracking number once your order ships out.
Of course those two emails could be days apart or they could be just minutes apart.

Hah maybe :)

It was 8 days last time for dk2, dont remember for dk1. But I do remember the agonising wait between the mails for them both last time round crystal clearly (and the euphoria when the shipped ones landed :)).

Rich people, it’s time to fulfill your destiny. LOL

Not-so-Rich people - you can play too!

That's why it's overpriced, you're paying for the controller and two games also, which I would have to likely sell.

You are right of course, but there is a certain logic to bundling games that you can use with the peripheral right away. Otherwise it's like getting a new toy at Christmas with no batteries :(

Well as Lucky said in the AMA the cost of games and even the xbone and mini controller were negligible and as digital products the games are too. The Eve game will have micro transactions so giving it away with the rift is a no brainer to them.

In regards to shipping the rift with a controller and headphones, it gives devs a solid platform to work towards as they know people who buy the rift will have those from day one.
