UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

I've been poking around out there myself but nothing of interest, should have brought my Asp but have my chrome cobra, little bling :D

I'm not saying we exclude Merope. I'm not even saying they aren't connected. Just that we don't know. We've been at this for how long now? I think a bit more structure in this search is called for. I feel like I've gone from gamer mode to tester mode. I'm not playing anymore, I'm using techniques I normally only use when testing games. As such, I prefer to fault on the side of logic.

We need facts now. What we need to look for, who is doing what, where we need to be. Narrow down the possibilities. Focus some of the team on the most likely possibilities, the rest on the team on the remaining possibilities. We are looking for one solution here - the discovery of meta-alloys. Finding barnacles would be a great breakthrough but the mystery here is meta-alloys. Those are the things that actually matter to the people with that mission. Barnacles may lead us there, but we don't know. If they don't, Barnacles are just a rare and fascinating piece of scenery.

I'm an ex-tester too (I even interviewed for a gig at FD many years ago...). Look at the design here - Merope is the system that the UAs are pointing to. Why do that if there's nothing to be found? No, we haven't found anything yet, but look at my post upthread - the task of searching Merope is huge, let alone the other nearby systems - remember, we have a planetary surface area equal to 50% of the Earth's surface to cover at an altitude of 2500-4000m. My estimate of an expected search time of 430 person-days to achieve that is likely on the low side.

We also have no other specific leads. Maybe the barnacles are somewhere else in the galaxy, but we have no idea where that might be so any search is going to be be extremely speculative. We have a lead on something interesting in or around Merope. Let's follow it up and see where it takes us.

* Meta Alloys are probably not in Merope, because if they were, given how much time and effort has gone into exploring that system, they would probably have been found by now

I wish we could say this. The idea of spending my free time over the next week flying around Merope's selection of rockballs in an upside-down Cobra doesn't exactly fill me with joy, but the place is enormous and we've barely scratched the surface of this job.

* Meta Alloys can be found in Randomly Generated (blue) POIs, as well as dev-made (fixed) POI's

How do know this? Do we have a dev post somewhere?

I'm getting to the point where I think we need a wiki for this investigation. Organization will not hurt anyone.

I'd love a subforum dedicated to the UA mystery. A single thread makes it hard to hold a conversation on one topic, and important findings can get lost in the chatter.

I descended into a crater on the dark side of Pleione 4. Scraped the belly of the Python a few times - wasn't ready for the 1.8g! - but only superficial damage.

I spent an hour getting to the bottom of this crater, finding tea bases and sentry-guarded gold, careered down it a few times and, by the time I got bored, turns out I was still a good 20k away from the centre!

I've scoped out a few of the reddish 'tracks' I found there, but didn't see anything unusual (doesn't mean it's not there of course, but even in VR with free look, it's really hard to scan the surface visually.

Going back down to a green area I've spotted that looks interesting now.

And Hi to the CMDR I saw there ;). The Pleiades has never been so busy!

With the increase in smuggling missions out of maia, and the ongoing sales of unknown artifacts to the maia station, things are getting very busy, maia had 1000+ ship transits yesterday.

The hunt is on, merope and maia are the most aggressively mapped, atlas, pleoine and other systems are getting coverage.

Some of us have been checking out the UA shell planets as well with no luck, seems micheal brookes wants us to grind ourselves to boredom and loose interest in the game rather than give us more complex coding and automation to some CGs and the like. So all we can do is bring in as many people that are interested and keep grinding those planets until one of us stumbles across the meta alloy

Its lame but its fun at the same time and for now thats a good thing

On the last point - feel free to use the forums on the Canonn site - there's no way we'll be getting a subforum here this year, unfortunately (confirmed by Brett C). Also, actually trying to follow multiple threads is harder than trying to follow one - it was like that early on with the UA, but the majority of people naturally gravitated towards one thread.

I agree, some more collaboration on data is required - we have a couple of CMDRs currently trying to document all the systems of the Pleiades right now, for example.

I reckon the first person to find one will likely be looking at a patch of rock/ice that another CMDR has already been over because I reckon there's more chance of finding a random one than a manually placed one.

The seven sisters is only a further hint! The UA´s always pointing to merope because she (named by the greek myth) was a mother and has a son and because she is ashamed of having had intercourse with a mortal man. This son was named "Glaukos" and is written in the greek myth as "Glaucus". So if you search in your galaxy map for "Glaucus" you´ll find a system. In this system you will find the next hint and so on and so on and so on...

Good luck to everyone!

Well I just pancakes into one of the planets in Atlas. I had my power priorities wrong and deployed hard points instead of boosting away from the ground and lost all power lol .
RIP my little Asp.

Don't worry, someone here will find your Occupied Escape Pod and bring you home safe.. How's the Wifi in Atlas?

Has anyone done any planteary landing in glaucus ?

Your points are valid. As I said before, we can't rule out Merope. But it's been searched heavily already. It only underlines the point that we need structure, we need to know what has been searched. It's entirely possible there are huge sections of Merope nobody's seen - just because we don't know that someone else hasn't already been there.

Also, for reference:
Nebulae are good places to look, especially the one with the seven sisters in it.

I have participated in some of the discussions on the Canonn forums but I feel like we need something less noisy than a forum for organizing this thread properly. A wiki at least allows us to collect data in a persistent fashion - something we can look at with a glance and see what needs to be done and what has been done.

Yes, Michael Brookes has confirmed in short order that:
barnacles are in the game
can be found on planets
are found in both non-fixed randomly generated POI AND fixed locations placed by devs
that the Pleiades is a good place to look

If I've left anything out or misrepresented someone else please let me know

I see the same questions popping up. Might pay to have all MB's posts and answers in the OP.

Yeah, I suggested this earlier today I think and I'm sure it's been said before, but I think it would help people, including myself.

Alright done for the night will resume my spreadsheet tomorrow.
So Far it contains:
- Distances from merope.
- Whether it's part of the nebula.
- Whether it's within the nebula or on the edge (and therefore somewhat debatable?)
- Main star Type
- How many Planets are landable in some systems
- Most systems that DO NOT have places to land (this eliminates them from searches)

Still ongoing! Take a look!

You sir are a winner in my book.

Hey same here!!! Though I was on the innermost planet in crap... .lost my system maps as well - it was a "Pleidas Sector" with a yellow star closest to Maia. I swore I had killed the downward momentum according to the indicators.... but visually the ground came up AWFULLY fast and.... boom! pancakes for all!! Aw well.. just wished I stopped at a close starport as now I'm 400+ LY away now.

Just as likely?... I think that's probably true when it comes to non-fixed barnacle POIs. But, I think it's highly likely that somewhere in merope there is a fixed barnacle POI just waiting for us. Now, which one is easier to find? No idea. But, I'd like to rule out Merope rather than just searching all over the place. And, since I can't search myself yet, I'm trying to get some fellow Canonns (Canonners, Canonnites?) to...

SEARCH IN MEROPE!

(How many have blocked me now, I wonder? I'm done for now. Just gonna leave it in my tag and go actually play the game. I've spent more time reading this thread than actually playing the game in the last month.)
Yes, just as likely. In fact more likely based on probability.

Please consider the possibility that the UAs are pointing to Merope for a different reason than barnacles. UAs pointing = clue 1. Barnacles will lead to clue 2. Michael knows we are well aware that the UAs point to Merope. He also knows that people have been searching the hell out of Merope for the entire beta, the entire holiday break, and every day since. Over 2 months. If they hand placed barnacles in Merope and that's why the UAs were pointing there, do you really think he would feel the need to come on here and give us a clue?

If anything, the clue is meant to tell us to search the whole nebula and stop searching just in Merope!

If they were in Merope, his clue would be "Keep doing what you've been doing. You'll find them eventually. You've just been incredibly unlucky since the beginning of horizons beta."
