Practical Information while Searching

POI Zones vs Persistant POI sites
- POI: Blue zones on your radar, best effect at altitudes 1.5km - 1.8km. Above 2km and higher the Zone may increase in size on your radar.
A POI is Non-persistent. It'll dissapear on reconnect or a session change.
You need to trigger the visibility of a POI on ground by getting close enough, range depending on POI may be 2-3km.
- PPOI: No indicator on Radar. It may be visible from 15km or so depending on your graphic settings.
It's sharable between commanders, altough you may experience a glitch where the site is not spawning.

Useful Tools

- Ability to look around with tracking device such a TrackIR.

Canonn 4 - Meta-alloys

05/01/2016, 3:48 PM
Q: Which released version though? Vanilla or Horizons.

05/01/2016, 5:30 PM
Q: Unfortunately the article on galnet was written by a player so it still most likely is just lazy POI placement.

05/01/2016, 6:15 PM
Q: Soo, does this mean we don't need the mission to find them?
Or any other special requirements (like an UA in the cargohold)?

Q: Thanks Michael, we appreciate narrowing the search.
I think for the purposes of continuity and those who don't follow the forums it'd be useful if this snippet of info was revealed in game through a Galnet article.

07/01/2016, 2:58 PM
Q: Barnacles grow on rocks, so have you tried planetary rings and asteroid belts? In particular around planets with no atmosphere?

07/01/2016, 4:15 PM
Q: Does it make a differance whether one looks in Open, Private Group, or Solo modes?

07/01/2016, 6:08 PM
Q: I would focus search on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celaeno - Note Cuthulu. MB is rather fond of Lovecraft's works.....

07/01/2016, 6:26 PM
Q: @MB as your about at the mo could you clear something up for me please.
When a player submits a Galnet post what is the criteria for getting one on.
does it have to be just well written or does it have to be something that will not take us in the wrong direction? or both?

07/01/2016, 6:41 PM
Q: @MB Question, say that if the Explorers on the PC find these 'Barnacles' and said Barnacles have a certain effect on the Galaxy/ED itself.
Will that effect transfer to the connected universe on Xbox?

08/01/2016, 10:59 AM
Q: MB also said that Barnacles are randomly found although some have been placed in certain systems.

All the rep to you commander. Could we get Rizal or Yaffle or someone to plug this into the first post?

EDIT: NM, looks like it's taken care of. Good work all.

32 pages and nothing new.

Awesome.

Yee who is in charge of the first page information, should reflect this.

Something that I personally did not like, was wading through pages upon pages of useless bullcrap, while looking through the first 4 threads about this.
(oh well go and read through them so you can get caught up) are you kidding yourself? you're kidding yourself. You are so full of silliness, it isn't even funny if you expect people to do that.
You, person incharge of the thread, have elected yourself as the custodian essentially. so comb through the silliness and put the relevent information in the first post, the OP. Cuz that's what custodians do.
You only have the authority to push up those posts you feel are relevent, and push down those you feel are trash.

Can anyone else agree?

That's what I'll do when I'll be back from Paris, this week end ;)
But 99% of the new thread so far is just white noise...

Nothing of scientific merit, but HIP 17694 B 13 B is covered in gorgeously misty and ominous canyons, if that floats anyone's boat. :)

Those Canyons at speed..... this is what Horizons was made for.

I like to call it "Spacewolf-ing" haha. I don't even care if I find a barnacle at this point (that's only partially true), searching just gives me an excuse to fly like an idiot as close to the surface as I can until I inevitably clip a hill-top and pancake my ship. :D
http://www.twitch.tv/hobonerz/v/34501757 - Spacewolf'in last night

Gotta run a few errands today before jumping back into the search, will be streaming my efforts again later today if anyone can't play and wants to hang out/keep the space-madness at a minimum.

for those looking for the constelations.

Thanks for the input, but unfortunately your image does not really help, as I can´t identify any star on it.

If you want to help with the constellation research (which will be great!!) please make sure to identify at least one of the stars on it when you take an image from a different system. Otherwise, we can´t use it to triangulate the exact position.

Update on the Constellation research:

We are finishing building a 3d matrix that will help us to locate each star of the constellation. Once this is done it'll be a matter of time to find the exact system :).

This is super cool. Cannot wait to see it when it's finished :D

In more, flight-of-fancy news. I decided to get to 0.0000 on Meropa A 1, just to see if Barnacles exist at the poles... they do not. Well, not uniquely and for sure anyway lol

It's funny all the hype about the 'clues' from MB. What he suggested was pretty much EXACTLY what we has planned as soon as Red discovered the shell in 1.4, and what we immediately tried as soon as horizon launched. All he has done is bring back the fly-by-night scientists who got dissuaded by 10 hours of no results.

The only real clue we have is from the release notes. Mentioning barnacles in it was not by accident, they would be mad to give away 'mystery' information like that. They needed to associate them with PPOI as a clue because we would have never found them hunting as we were.

Well spoken.

Here it is. Unfortunately I returned to 1A to try and get a repeat of the noise but no luck. Then I tried returning to roughly the same location but still nothing. Maybe it was just some background noise from Merope 1B? Who knows... Anyways, I have to end the search for now, will return soon!

https://youtu.be/1PdyCAy9ehM

I've heard this noise before as well. It isn't something UA's normally do. I've dropped my UA on Maia B1BA many times in several places in my surveys and it never made that sound, but when I dropped it about 500km from Maia B (the black hole) it made this noise. I have video of it, but I listened and it's exactly the same noise. I don't know what it means.

Yeah...

Barnacle Facts
1. Are they in the Game? - They are in the game
2. What Region of space can they be found? - Can be found in the region of the Seven Sisters nebula (Pleiades). - or Likely to be found in or close to nebulae, specially the Pleiades
3. Where do they live? In the void of space or on a planet? – Planet
4. How will they appear? - Either a POI or a specific placed location.
5. How common are they? - They are exceedingly rare.
6. Has a player found a Barnacle? - No
7. Are they linked to the Meta-Alloys and Mission? – Yes
8. Do I need a Mission to find them? - No

Barnacle Unknowns
1. What do they look like?
2. Do they show up as a blue circle while flying over a planet?
3. Are they only found with a crashed ship?
4. Are they only in the nebula or could they be near it?
5. Are they only found in dark areas of a planet (Craters or Trenches)?
6. What star type will the planet orbit?
7. What type of planet do they ‘live’ on?
8. Do they prefer cold or hot worlds?
9. Does there need to be volcanism of any type?
10. Are they related to the Horizons trailer with the green glowing objects?
11. High G(Gravity) or Low G or any G?

Theory (s)

Barnacles are shown in the Horizons trailer
1. Video shows SRV on a 1G +/- 0.1 world
2. In a misty dark area
3. At a crashed ship site

'Shell' UA's Point to Merope

1. UA's all point to the main star - They could be related to Barnacles

You basically took my short list of facts and greatly improved upon them. +rep for you!

On another note:

Here are two videos from my recent experiments. One shows the UA sound when dropped near Maia B, the other video shows a strange metallic signal I picked up on the wave scanner, with no visual indicators. You can "see" (rather, hear it with an empty wave scanner) clearly toward the end of the video after I move away from all the interfering objects and manage to find a nice area with nothing visual on the scanner, but the sound persists:

Also, I have created a google doc for the detailed planetary surveys. There is not much there right now, but anyone who is willing to contribute is invited to. If you're tired of searching areas of planets that may or may not have already been searched by other CMDR's, you may want to contribute to this effort. Please record your surveys. Perhaps together we can find the fixed persistent POI's with barnacles.

Just a quick word of advice to those who 'play hard' like I used to be able to before, well, life...

8 hours of persistent POI searching/flying/SRVing etc is hardcore, but can be joyless if you don't get a result.

We can't expect to find this within a couple of days of the latest hint. Take a break - go back to the bubble, or pop to maia for some res hunting or something. Break up the monotony and you might be able to stay the distance longer!

We need lots of CMDRs doing this, not a few doing it for huge long stints at once!

That said - if you are one of those who just finds joy in meandering about and finding whatever you find, then hats off to you :)

Absolutely sound advice. I've been finding it super fun to throw my ship around at surface level and see what I can see but even then I couldn't do this, and don't do this, all day for my whole playtime. That's just madness haha :)

The UA sound is the "angry" BG sound it makes when receiving damage.

Drop it from an SRV and it won't be there, drop it from the ship and it will.

Hey all,

Can someone please check something for me ? I think Ive found a persistent POI in a crashed NAV beacon... which seems suspicious...

Found it at lunch time and did the data cache scan thing etc but listening to it it sounds like someone's left a TV on inside it... BUT there is also a burble of simple morse too, I just shrugged and thought standard generic crashed nav beacon and logged off...

However Ive just re logged on hours later, spawned in my buggy and came across the exact same site with new Skimmers to pop etc.

Location is Merope 2D / 16.9338 / 141.8649

I might just be going Banana ! But it seems different espcially with the awful masking noise like a TV from next door turned up too loud...

Forgive me if its nout, o7

What Im thinking is, is this different and broadcasting info...

A few of us here have thought that there is something in some of these crashed Nav Beacons, for a starters they should not be there not from a scientific stand point (any crash at those speeds would have turned it to dust) We just need to start looking at the different types of crashed Nav Beacons.
so i doubt very much that it is NOWT as you say, a good find indeed :D

And this is why after 18 hours of flying upside down ( i think it broke my brain) i went and got back into the UA pics again for a lil bit. wise words indeed.

Right, I think we are being led on a massive wild goose chase, and the Devs are sniggering as they watch us.

A bit of out-of-the-box thinking...but:

a) 'Barnacle' is a clue. It is an (organic) creature that sticks to the surface of things.
b) We are told of meta-alloys 'They are easily machined, but as yet cannot be manufactured, only found in space. (My emphasis). Not, 'on planetary surfaces'.
c) The breakdown of Obsidian Orbital seems a bit too coincidental to be entirely without suspicion...

So: Has anyone searched the OUTSIDE of OO for 'things that shouldn't be there'? Has anyone searched the Maia Nav Beacon. Is there any salvageable wreckage around, and has anyone checked the surfaces??

Just an idea....
