Need advice - smuggling

Asking for advice on how to avoid the scans.

Prior to the new mission system - that would make it pre-Horizons - smuggling was pretty easy. You just evade or avoid the interdictions and then at the station go silent and run in - or if it was a platform then no scans happened and so you just went in as normal.

Now, however, it seems to be different. I tried my first smuggling mission last night and got scanned. No problem - it was just a fine and the payment well and truly covered it. But still, it was irksome and I hate paying fines (in RL too!). Here's how it unfolded (I'll try to be brief).

In SC heading towards station - intercept a comms call from the cops about smuggling operation detected - darn, they are on to me! OK - evasive maneuvers and I avoid an interdiction. Cool, I think, now as I drop from SC all I have to do is my usual modus operandi to enter station and I am done - what a cool dude I am! Um - not! As soon as I drop I get the "scan detected" message! Damn! And I am not even in the station's space yet so these are not the usual station cops. So I go silent thinking this will break the scan - but no! 11,000 credit fine.

So how do you break a scan? There must be a way because otherwise, in this scenario, there is no escape and that means, long term, you can really do nothing to avoid them and so being a successful smuggler becomes purely a matter of chance and there is no skill involved. To me, that breaks the concept of ED. Up to this point in my various careers I have always been able to get better at something by becoming more skilled at it. Is smuggling different?

Speed is your friend. When you drop out near a station boost around 12km from the entrance, take your time and line up, then boost all the way up while requesting docking permission, then full reverse and drop landing gear just before going in the letter box.

Also for random police interdictions about closing in on smuggling rings, just high wake out and jump back in or you'll keep getting interdicted as they follow you.

In most smuggling scenarios speed will allow you to outrun a scan provided you can boost to about 390.

Target the scanning ship (generally the closest - there's a keybind for that) and deploy hardpoints to break a scan.

It's a dumb way to do it, and I'd prefer some relevant skill were involved, but this is what works right now.

Speed is the only option. If you can see on the radar; who is close enough to scan you, put them on your 6 and boost like hell. There is a range and a time duration, for all scans to take place. Not sure of the numbers, but do know that in reality, they are low and once you know, easy to avoid. I look at it this way. Anything over 3Km away, can't touch me. Now just keep an eye out for those getting closer. Sorry to hear you got scanned, as you dropped. It happens.

If you get one of the scripted messages and you're in a destination system, target a nearby system and jump out, then jump back and try again. It resets them. If you don't, I've read they just follow you to the destination station.

No need to fire - target and deploy hardpoints alone will end their scan.

Oh really? That's interesting. You'd have to be quick about it but that I did not know. Cool.
Thanks all. What about chaff? Does that do it?
And high-waking out - very good point. So what you are saying is when you get that message whilst in SC that means they are gonna get to scan you one way or another so it is best to scrammo out and come back in when that happens. Right?

Thanks Cmdr - I will.
m - I did. Too much. I only play ED and all that stuff you have there - holy moly! Couldn't see anything relevant to me in the 10 seconds I looked and then got bored and left. Sorry - I am sure your vid is most excellent!

Yep, exactly.

Red comms from the cops while you are in SC is a Red Light. Get out of the system (high wake out) and come back for another run. If not the cops will haunt you. Even if you got interdicted by one, submitted and then got away towards your station he might not interdict you during the rest of your cruise but you can sure bet that he will be there when you try for a docking run.

Like already mentioned speed is king. The cobra is best for this. I've been smuggling for quite a while now and I have yet to scanned. If you don't like the Cobra, the Diamondback Scout is a really good alternative. It can jump longer distances, but it has less cargo space and speed. On the otherhand it's more maneuverable and it runs cold in silent running.

I don't consider the Asp a good choice. Sure I can jump far and have more cargo, but it's a medium sized ship and it's quite slow, which means that it's more likely to get scanned. Now the DBX might be viable, since that at least is a small ship and can almost permenantly stay in silent running.

Brilliant! Thanks all - great tips. Gonna try another one or two tonight and see how I go. If I can figure out how to handle these I might try a few long distance ones from Robigo in my Python. I'm using a DBE as a lander to learn how that works and also as a trial for the smuggling runs which I must say is great because of the range of the thing. Not the greatest in terms of agility but it's a fun ship all the same.

Asp can boost to 390 with 64t of cargo, and can outrun scans.
