Ok, I'm going to go out on a limb here...
This may be an unpopular view, and is solely my own, but after playing the new mission system extensively for the past week, I think they are working better for me than in 1.4.
Initially, after installing 1.5, I wondered where all the missions had gone - and was disappointed to see the kill x pirate missions were reduced as these were the ones I liked doing the most. But after the initial shock of change, now that I've been flying around a few different stations in a few different systems, I've noticed I'm getting a steady stream of interesting missions in different flavours. A few assassinations, couple of militia contracts, some charity missions, couple of kill pirates... and I've just been picking off a few of these (missions) whilst I do other things in the game.
Perhaps if missions were my sole focus I would be peeved, but as I tend to do them as the mood strikes (i.e. whenever I spot one that's interesting enough), the new system seems to be working fine for that. And in the past couple of days I moved my federal rank by nearly 30% just nitpicking missions.
And now I quite like that only a handful of missions display each time, rather than the 20 or so in the previous release. It feels a little more realistic and generates a little more interest and excitement whenever I see one that takes my fancy.
Now, there are still some issues: Missions generating that I can't complete for instance, because I am currently playing on a Mac laptop with no access to planetary landings. But I wonder if this is because my commander has also played in Horizons (as that is what I have installed on the PC at home)? So perhaps somewhere in my account Horizons access is recorded. And there are still some awful bugs (a 'deserter' that I was meant to terminate suddenly became a 'pirate lord' in the mission alternative and then wouldn't complete).
I'd still like to see missions pay out a little more too. But now I see them as supplementary to other activities rather than being my sole activity in the game.
