UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

Ok so time for a bit of out of the box thinking. The great MB has said that you are guaranteed to find them if you are in the right location. FD are presumably pretty good at Maths so they will know that even with 1000 CMDRs scouring every landable moon at POI height would take essentially forever. Secondly Kerrash mentioned that he thought that it would be visible from orbitalish height - although he may have no expert knowledge so a caveat there.

However if both these possibilities are correct then we have not been to the location yet even in orbital cruise. Given the number of people involved this seems unlikely.

theory: the dashed things are on a planet immune to the powers of the advanced discovery scanner. Trying a bit of old school parralax stuff in (most obviously) Merope might be worth a shot?

Had a very similar thought, the UAs are cloaking something in Merope, searched the inner system from above and found nothing - didn't check outer system though.

I think if Michael Brooks could just confirm that 'Barnacles' can be found from a ship scouting roughly 500km up I would feel a lot better. Also I do worry that the odd crash we have could be related to a 'Barnacle' site.

One would expect an in-game clue. Anyone picking up the mission with no access to this forum would have an impossible task.... Unless we have missed a clue in game of course.

Even though we are searching the correct region of space, it's still a unimaginable huge task.

He specifically said 'if you're in the right location'.

This suggests using some deduction methods to work out where they could be and narrow the search. It would be totally meaningless if they just placed these in a random location which is impossible to work out using the clues we have.

Michael

I think this is the biggest clue he could give us; "Guaranteed to find them in the right location". So, it's not so much about finding them, but rather the right location. This means they'd be so noticeable it would be near impossible to miss, or that the location is so out of the ordinary...

I agree: all this stuff is intriguing, but the whole story lack of links with the game itself.

GERMANIUM:

-It can form alloys with metals such as aluminium and gold.

-Melting point 1211 K

-Like silicon, germanium naturally reacts and forms complexes with oxigen in nature. Unlike silicon, it is too reactive to be found naturally on Earth in the free (native) state.

Narrowing the search to .... ZONES WICH MAY SHOW MAGMA ACTIVITY such as mountains, deep craters, etc.... specially if the change to a darker coloration (observable from space.

I think this is key. We need to determine how to identify which parts of a planet are most likely to be resulting from recent geologic activity.

Shouldn't we split this forum a bit? I would but im not at home. The whole thing is getting hard to keep track and it makes it easy to miss something that might be important.

How about another poll for the suspected systems where we only post FACTS. Planets searched (polar areas most importantly maybe) etc. No theories. So we can see where other people were already looking.

Seriously. In just 10minutes this thread jumps to a new side, at this rate it's not efficient! Too many duplicates and too many theories that has nothing to do with facts and won't really help the search.

Cmdrs i keep reading this thread and i see 2 patterns. Some trying to understand barnacles. And some trying to find the exact same one than the video trailer.
I dont think there is much more to grab from the trailer than :
1) barnacles are in game and
2) they glow in the dark.
And thats it.
Everything else will come from understanding the story.
For example ( but its just an example) ua could be seeds from an alien species spreading disease or terraforming in which case Peregrina would be a good place to look for but it's just an idea.
And being in a Corvette, no way i head there ;) until really bored of my questing in pleiade.

Still looking around looking for geyser like area.

I thought I found something obvious but on reflection I think its more likely something hasnt loaded properly

heres what it looked like lower

Theres a rendered patch under me that is loaded properly but you can see in the distance its pitch black still

Please this! Pretty please!

Merope is the strongest candidate for me with the UA link. I've started systematically searching the north poles of all landable planets. If that yields nothing then I'll check the south poles and 0,0

I can't believe in how many ways we can stretch this mystery given the malleability of tin foil (hats).

Thursday, as in the cryptic mission log, comes from Thor's day.

Thor's hammer, Mjölnir, is forged in a dying star (supernova, leads naturally to a black hole and a nebula) of 'uru', which is a material with very unique properties (Meta-Alloy).

Can't take off this tinfoil hat any time soon.

So the star system in question can indeed be Maia if you ask me.

Thor's Helmet is also a nebula.

PR-5 R2 S5+6 or pr[5>2] 5,6 seems a little "cryptographic". If this is part of the clues then some of us should look into this in as much depth as we can. I have looked at SIMBAD and it could be coordinates (meh, doesn't look like it TBH. The closest corresponding object is a little too far south west to be part of the seven sister area. ).

Also Pr does crop up in cryptology books - but i am too thick (anybody work in Langley, Virginia; or Cheltenham?).

Wolfram alpha spits out nothing of interest.

I've also been following the forum since thread 2. So many people here now given the traffic report of obsidian we might have a team of 1.5k people or more. Some of them will post here. Some of them won't read the first page. Some of them will post theories. One thing is for sure it will hide relevant info unless you want to backtrack 20pages that were made in 30minutes. WHILE gaming!

Organise! We'll miss the point if it grows like this!

In the trailer the rvs approaches what someone has referred to as the pyramid, could this not be a barnacle. We certainly would notice it if nearby.

I'll hunt it down for you tonight if I can find it and report back (if I dont see anything further from here)

Took a quick detour back to the house at lunch time and found it.

It is in the Orion Nebula. it is called * tet02 Orionis C

Only other thing I've seen in the map with an asterisk other than Sagittarius A*... also no black holes there just two big blue B stars from what I gather from looking at the map.

I'd like to suggest the barnacles are found near a white hole. It would explain how this conversation keeps going round in circles...
