UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

For those posting "I have searched x planet for 2 hours and found nothing so there is nothing there", here is a quick and dirty calculator for the %age of planet surface searched:

https://jsfiddle.net/6smgknLm/1/

e.g. Searching a tiny 1000km diameter moon for 1 hour in an Asp at cruising speed (290m/s) with 1000m viewing distance will cover 0.06% of the surface

Edit: updated page calc and fixed typo

I am writing up a huge post for the /r/lovecraft subreddit and another Lovecraft community to see if they can see anything that might help us.

As we all know there have been several connections with Lovecraft and the Cthulhu mythos since the beginning of the UA hunt. People even posted "its in the Pleiades because of Cthulhu" even so far back as the first UA thread. The prize for figuring out the UA X,Y,Z graph was a leather bound notebook with Cthulhu on the front. MB is admittedly a big fan of Lovecraft going so far as to collect things and has Cthulhu stationary on his desk.

Could someone PM me or reply to this post with every single Lovecraft connection you can think of so I can compile a Elite/Lovecraft mega post for their respective communities to mull over. I am trying to find what I can but I do not want to miss anything.

P.S. I am aware that this is probably a rabbit trail but it won't hurt and they will eat this stuff up I'm sure.

* People even posted "its in the Pleiades because of Cthulhu" even so far back as the first UA thread. - Anyone have a link? I have found a few posts people have made but does anything pop out to you?

* The prize for figuring out the UA X,Y,Z graph was a leather bound notebook with Cthulhu on the front. - Does anyone have the pic of the notebook?

* MB is admittedly a big fan of Lovecraft going so far as to collect things and has Cthulhu stationary on his desk.

* The Pleiades is mentioned several times in Lovecraft's writings. Many of the "Elders" come from there - Anyone know names or details?

* There was a post from MB in reply to a Cthulhu comment. - I need help finding this... something about street corners.

If you want to go down the Lovecraft rabbit hole, try Calaeno.

Celaeno is one of the seven stars of the Pleiades. On its fourth planet is the Great Library of Celaeno, which houses stone tablets containing secrets stolen from the Great Old Ones and Elder Gods. Professor Laban Shrewsbury spent some time here, transcribing the library's knowledge in his notebook—a manuscript that would later be known as the Celaeno Fragments.

Quick question: Does anyone have experience in knowing if Shipwrecks (Anaconda, T9) appear in the blue circles? I understand some may be hand placed, not sure if radar would pick it up.

And do the SRV Wave Scanners located them?

Or is the only way eye balling?

So, my unexplained death on Taygeta 4 has me a little perplexed.
(...)
Questions:
- has anyone else experienced unexplained loss of control?
- is it exclusively on high-G worlds?
- any issues using the debug cam?
- other related weirdness

I was on Taygeta 4 yesterday, also using the debug cam in the way you describe and it worked without any problems.

Btw: what happened last night? Only 4 pages since I went to sleep? Guys, are we all getting a little tired? :)))))

Unfortunately Celaeno in game only has two planets and an asteroid belt - unless we're buying the hidden planet angle.

ATTENTION ALL COMMANDERS!!!

Location: Pleiades Sector QD-S B41 2

SITREP: Unusual crater on Ice World emitting loud "Ticking" sound @ Approx: 1/2 second intervals.

Currently 6km above, awaiting advice on how to proceed.

Just for kicks.... Lets say we where to try and find a hidden planet or a surface feature to give closer inspection to. Is there ANY descriptions of surrounding landscape of these locations? I'm assuming a bunch of pillars and incomprehensible geometry or whatever hehehe :)

First: are you sure you can land on it?
Second: Land.

EDIT:
Correct name should be Pleiades Sector QD-S b4-1 2

What's all this silly hidden planet stuff about? You can't hide a gravity well, or have I been suckered into some sort of joke?

The Goldilock's Zone is not exactly a good way to think. For one, we're not entirely sure what sort of base chemical components this species possesses. This zone is more specifically for water-based life. Are they water based life? We don't know. Besides, it's entirely likely they can survive without being in the zone. Look at the UA. They've spent god knows how long in deep space.

The barnacle will likely have a planet in it's own goldilocks zone, which is totally distinct from our own goldilocks zone. On that planet will be another goldilocks zone, where everything is "just right".

A few of us (myself included) believe it will be related to volatiles, which provides a localized atmosphere and a source of metal from the planet itself (maybe around 33%). Being tidally locked to the star may also be necessary, as misty craters tend to occur more where the light meets the dark.

I currently testing out and researching as many of these as I can, until I lock it down. I did encounter a very viable planet (KN MUSCAE) in the Coalsack nebula and may head back out there, as I didn't do a very thorough search at the time. It is similiar, if not the same, as the one in the David Braben misty crater video. It has a decent temp, not too hot, not too cold, 33% metal, tidally locked to the star and very deep dark misty craters. I don't know if gravity is a defining variable yet.

The whole of the Coalsack Nebula looks very promising as it has a number of planets deep within the nebula itself. It takes at least an hour, or more, to get there though!

Naturally. Have only found a wreck with a few pods so far.

However, going back up a few km to investigate this clicking sound further. It disappears while on the ground.

KN MUSCAE was checked a few pages back. ;)
