UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

It doesn't matter if we didn't find them so far because there was a problem with spawning or simply because we weren't at the same spot. Although I'd be curious about the random spawn chance :D The point is we have them now.

Did the UA dropped next to it morse anything but the name of the body you're on?
I'm at work...

Or is it impossible to record any sound due to extreme CMDR traffic at the sites now?

Theory time !

Barnacles are mining installations (the barnacle grows spikes around it with pods containing refined elements)

UAs are vessels from the mining installations to wherever the minerals must be delivered (stored in those cylindrical pods along the spine and the meta alloys is contained in the bulb)

I'm leaning to the theory that these are some sort of semi organic mining station (Thargoid tech ?) and the UA's are "shipment " canisters - maybe going to Barnards loop ?
Be someone/thing there wondering who has been hijacking their meta-alloy shipments - lets blame the guys blockading Obsidian if any aliens come asking ;)

Yeah ! Theory buddies ! :D

What to the Barnacles look like on the SRV's wave scanner?

uc

Or we could just maybe get a UA subforum. Call it Elite Area 51 ;)

Really though, we need it, I love following this thread but this is pandemonium! UAs, barnacles, exploding SRVs, allegations of bugs, theories, etc etc etc. This thing is all over the place.

I started a poll (now closed) on this a few days ago...

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=221475

Over 76% of cats said their owners agree with you.

I did put a pointer in the previous disorganised, impossible to read cogently, mega-thread, but it probably got buried in the mess and missed by more than a few people.

I really have to say.

This is really LAME!

We were all searching for them for days. Hour after hour.
Now we finally found them and the game crashes all the time. Sometimes the barnacles are there, sometimes they aren't.

@Frontier:
Did you test this before? I know it's a lot of server load. But don't you do load testing? This was expectable....

I am now at exactly the same location were the first barnacle after merope5c was found. No barnacle for me here. Just a sentry with a beacon nearby...
Perhaps it turns into a barnacle in some hours... :( :( :(

Well, how could they test these things with the high server load and the huge number of players without those players actually going there?

It simply doesn't work if they kindly ask players to go to a certain location. No one does as asked, even in betas. Developers have to arrange these events in a sort of fun way to attract players to certain locations in large numbers. Sure it'll be frustrating for some players but there is simply no other way to test.

The second location with a persistent anaconda wreck being broadcast minutes after the first barnacle is found confirms this in my mind. They needed to run some tests on server and POI functionality so they introduced the planned gameplay elements in such a way to promote large scale testing while most of the people enjoys themselves. This is something we have to accept if we want to play a game which is openly declared by the developers as work in progress.

Interesting... that would suggest a more artificial construction than the UAs? Does it sound like hte signature of a regular ship as well?

Well I've really enjoyed the adventure so far. I know that there has been lots and lots of flying over amazing landscapes and searching for alien life, but er... isn't that basically why we play :)

It seems that we've started to crack the code at last.

I guess they have a pretty high rate of spawning once you get the planet right. We were so spread out over a large number of planets, we couldn't find any for days. Now the search is focused on just two planets with a much higher density of players per planet. It's only natural so many people find them now ON KNOWN PLANTES.

That's simply not true. I am a web application developer myself. If you expect a lot of traffic you do load tests. You don't need real players to test this, you can simulate traffic.
We payed a lot of money for this experience. This is simply bad quality management...

Afraid I'm out of the discussion for now guys. This is all moving FAR too quickly. It's becoming impossible to actually discuss. I'll return to the forums in time when things have settled :)

I don't think testing web applications with simulated traffic is the same as real life testing of a multiplayer game with open p2p instances (the servers are the players themselves) which has to sync a lot of physical conditions, hitboxes and the resulting collision detection.

If I'm wrong, tell me how I'm wrong in detail. I can understand and appreciate the explanation.

Edit: sleutelbos is right. This is not the place to be talking about this. I'll appreciate if you PM me though. New knowledge is always good.

And if possible in a different topic. ;)

I thought that as well. Then I thought. You know what, they are honey pots. Irresistible poplars the we all can't resist to eat (place in our cargo holds). They shutdown stations making it easier to invade. The 'goids are coming!

You know... That's the problem with Poplars. They're sooo tasty but morally wrong to eat.

Remember that time when Michael came on here and asked if we wanted hints about where the barnacles are? Then everyone went crazy looking for them?

I hate to tell you, but this is the volume testing. They can't really do it in beta without giving away the story line, so they do it in game with treasure hunts, mysteries, etc. Hopefully they've gotten some valuable information from the last few days that will make the game better, and improve everyone's experience on the planet surface.

Not that it excuses the main object of the search not appearing when it should, but it might help to take a step back and realize that they aren't intentionally ruining anyone's fun, and they're doing the best they can to make the game great.
