I just prepared this this morning for you guys:
https://www.reddit.com/r/UnknownArt...a_preliminary_study_paper_on_space_barnacles/

I hope you like it. :)

Just gonna repost the images here if you don't mind, that way they get "archived".

Awesome job. :)

Since yesterday was, I believe, National Poetry Day in UK
and since nobody here seems to have noticed it
and there is an awful lot of repetition this thread.
Here's my (appalling) contribution:

If at first your barnacle don't spawn,
dont curse, defame or blaspheme, just yawn
and raise a bug report.
If you CTD, or thrusters conk out, don't retort
dont curse, defame or blaspheme,
just yawn and raise a bug report.
Complaining may be cathartic but it don't help,
just grinds the thread so
dont curse, defame or blaspheme,
just yawn and raise a bug report.

Silly question: how do I read planet coordinates?

If there is more than juste navigate at sight, il would love to know..

EDIT :

Set the compass to 0 or 180 and the first reading will move without the second one and set it to 90 or 270 and the second reading will move without the first one altering.
You'll get the hang of it but it took me an age to work that out last night!

Where do we set the compass? seems like i miss something
.

Riz: You might want to reconsider the formatting of your coords for the discovered barnacles on first post. At the moment, you can't tell that:

Merope 5C
-26.3495 - 156,4047 is meant to be (-26.3495),(-156.4047)
and
Pleiades Sector JC-U B3-2 Planet 1
21.9135 - 96.9802 is meant to be (21.9135),(96.9802)

This is the most frustrating thing ever...
I'm doing the Strange Alloys mission, I assasinated the person I was supposed to and now they've severed contact with me and some guy is supposed to be trying to kill me I think I'm not sure, but all he's doing is flying at 30km/s in supercruise in such a way that I can NEVER get behind him to interdict him, and he isn't trying to interdict me, I can't tell if this is a bug or just really bad design but it's driving me insane I've been trying to interdict him for 10 minutes now....

Edit: ok I found out what was going on, he was trying to interdict me but had glitched and had no FSD interdictor. I waited until he was following me then pulled back on the throttle and interdicted.

Basically after being offered 6 million it looks like I'm getting NONE of that now ¬.¬ bit annoyed but we'll see where it goes from there.

Riz to update the Strange Alloys section in the first page I got this message after assassinating the target:

View attachment 95147

Then someone showed up shortly after who was listed as a mission target (an expert FDL), took him out and now nothing.
Hopefully something else will happen now because I WANT MY REWARD! (and want to see where this all leads, it seems very interesting)

Hello this is my first post, and I am just beginning to understand the alien lore so I apologize for any mistakes I make. Also I ask that you correct any of my mistakes if you see them.
Ok now that is done I have a theory to contribute to the barnacles. Not sure if this is the place, but maybe? Anyways my guess is not about the purpose of the barnacles but the location of the next clue. Some are saying that Merope might not be a persistent site for barnacles because Michael mentioned that barnacles can spawn in nebuli randomly. But I believe Michael used careful wording in order to avoid giving away which barnacles are important. In greek mythology the Pleiades are chased by Orion the hunter. Merope was sought after most by orion, and being the youngest of the 7 sisters was protected in the middle of the shell. We know that the UAs around the shell point to Merope in the middle and that is why I believe it to be the place for a persistent barnacle site. I believe the next clue lies near the Orion constellation (in the belt most probably), or perhaps in the Orion nebula. Unfortunately I am away from my PC and am unable to make the trip out there myself, but I will try to fly out there as soon as I can (which is about a week from now).
Again I have only just begun really diving into the lore of the thargoids and UAs but I believe that merope, let alone the pleiades, being the site of the barnacles is too much of a coincidence to not be linked to greek mythology. I have other guesses about possible next locations including the "golden apple" guarded by draco the constellation (the hesperides in mythology). So if this is all just a myth and it ends up that the next clue is not based around Orion I am sorry for wasting everyone's time and I will look for other possible explanations of the barnacles.
Thank you for your time!

Maybe see if you can get someone to help, he can't avoid being interdicted from two directions.

I'm at work sry.

How do you know he is supposed to kill you?

can't come, i'm at work.

The compass is (from memory - not got access to ED ATM) at the top of the screen just point your ship or SRV at heading 0-180 or 90-270 and start moving. Of course as you get used to it you'll be able to fly a more direct route but to start off just get one reading fixed then move onto the other one.

Here you go, random image from google, this is the SRV compass readout you want to be setting:

I've had Anacondas "attack" me with no weapons before - just possible the intent is for that NPC to interdict you but it doesn't have the kit to do it!

B3-2 1, took some time for it to show up for me too.

Anything special you have to do to get it to show up? I've been driving and flying around for 30 minutes and nothing.

On a side note anyone else get your ship 'landing' in the air or on a crazy tilt, but no 'SHIP SECURED' message (even with landing gear UP!)

Gonna revise a theory I first posted to the canonn boards in light of recent facts etc etc... posting here as I can't access the canonn boards at the mo.. sorry but obvious wall of text warning... spoiler tagging it to keep it easy to scroll past lol

Several decades ago, a race of creatures who used a form of technology based on a bio-polymer found in their own exoskeletons, was nearly wiped out by a man-made "mycoid" virus of some sort, and forced to run away before the virus wiped out their entire society. Some form of cure was provided to them, but we have no idea how it was used, how the whole thing had affected their society, and what might have happened should the virus have mutated etc etc

Skip back to the present...UA's collected in space deteriorate a ships systems in much the same way as toxic waste, untill dumped, the ship is destroyed or forced to land.
Barnacles contain meta-alloys which have a cellular like structure which breaks down when melted, losing all its special properties and reverting it to a basic compound.
Barnacles do not appear to be indigenous to the planets they are found on, and we can assume the heat of entry into an atmosphere is sufficient to melt them as despite finding them on airless planets, we've had no reports of inhabited worlds wondering why theres a great big glowy alien structure poking out of their petunia's.

In addition to this, we have a derelict craft surrounded by barnacles, no trace of a UA at its location, and UA's found free floating in space performing basic scans and releasing some unknown gas or particulate matter.

If we then follow the theory that these things are in some way related to the thargoids:

The thargoids are often suggested to be insectoid, and vastly more numreous than humans. With the rapid reproductive cycle associated with insectoid life, and the sheer numbers, there is plenty of room there for the original Mycoid virus to have mutated in some way - perhaps giving rise to a new life form like the barnacles. Alternately, as obviously skilled bio-engineers (as evidenced by their vastly superior, biologically based, technology) then we might also infer that the Thargoids, discontent to treat a percieved weakness (to the mycoid virus) with a vaccine, have instead attempted to bio-engineer the weakness out of themselves and their technology. Given both the cellular make up, and advanced intrinsic properties of the alloys that have been reported, its not too hard a stretch of the imagination to make really.

I propose that the UA's and Barnacles are the same thing and function, at least in some way, as a trojan horse. In order to evaluate a group, or in this case, species, you want to find out what they know and are capable of. This would normally mean working hard at finding a way of penetrating all the security and defenses around some research facility or another, and trying to perform your research without alerting anyone to your presence.
However, as any hacker will know, the weakest point in any security, is usually the people involved. One means of breaking into a computer system, for example, is simply to drop some computer readable media around your target, and wait for someone who is too curious for their own good, to pick it up and put it in a computer for you.

It's not too hard a leap to surmise that an alien species might do the same thing - we even already have novels like Sphere, demonstrating exactly that.

If you assume an old species, forced into retreat, has dealt with the only weakness thats ever been exploited against them, and wants to make sure its safe to come back. Sure you could ride a half dozen battlecruisers into the nearest inhabited system and start taking names, but you have no idea whats changed in the time you've been away, and maybe you're vastly outmatched now.

So you get sneaky, and fire off some Trojan Probes. Where people find them, they find something curious and mysterious, and sooner or later, one of them picks up the thing, and delivers it somewhere where it can be studied - which ironically, is exactly where you want to start your investigations from.

Next, to prevent anyone figuring out what your device does before you're ready to move, you ensure it disrupts your enemies abilities to communicate about it for as long as possible. On ships systems appear to take damage... space stations go dark and start failing... on planets...?

A bio-technically oriented species is going to approach things biologically. The best organism for the task is immediately obvious - a virus. Virus's attack a host by invading its cells and then using those cells to manufacture more of itself. The more of itself it can manufacture, the more it can spread, and so on and so on.
In keeping with the viral theme, we even know that much like a bad case of the flu, a fever; or in this case, heat in general, kills it - although I digress.

I suggest the gas we see released from a UA is some form of biological nano-tech, used for converting matter into material that can be used by the UA to grow.
Ships degrade as they are eaten from the inside, stations and their occupants are slowly digested, communication is lost, and unseen, perhaps stunted by the limited resources, the UA's grow.
On airless planets, perhaps, the UA's find all the materials they need to grow and develop into a barnacle, which in turn, perhaps, will create and dispatch new copies of itself into space.

What would happen on a resource rich world with its own atmosphere? I dread to think... and fortunately we are protected from finding out, as long as no one is stupid enough to carry a UA in their hold down to the surface...

So for now we have a derelict anaconda, on a rock, surrounded by barnacles... barnacles which perhaps it inadvertently put there, when it was forced to land or crashed into the airless rock on which it was found after the UA it was carrying caused a serious failure in its systems. In the time since, the UA has gorged itself on the planet surface, and grown into a barnacle and has entered the next phase of whatever lifecycle it's been following.

TL;DR - DrNoesis has a vague theory about the origin/purpose of UA's & Barnacles, and posted it here so he wouldnt forget it, as he wants to compile it into something more meaningful when he isnt stuck at work scribbling stuff down between customers, and because he welcomes feedback....

Deliveries of Meta alloys wanted in Varati!
.
The Science team operating the Canonn lab on Bond Hub in Varati have urgently request samples of the newly discovered commodity Meta alloys.
The team have been investigating the recent station malfunctions and hope that researching this new commodity may finally lead to a solution.
Meanwhile a second team of Canonn scientist dispatched a few weeks ago to help staff the labs on Palins base are still at Obsidian Orbital and have begun setting up a temporary research centre onboard.
.
Sell your meta alloys to Bond Hub in Varati, it may be the cure or could lead to something else! Imagine all the goodies Canonn Tech can come up with, I want an indestructible biscuit tin! :D

Heres a closeup pic of a barnacle on scanner too

2 Meta Alloy spikes destroyed - https://youtu.be/RTf_2Nxg8kM
Approx 4 spikes destroyed - https://youtu.be/Emsd6neNq48
All spikes destroyed - https://youtu.be/jJWhCCrqyNo

I 'think' its makes angrier sounds if its damaged but could also be me expecting to hear that.

Some things I've noticed.
The blue flashies only appear around the central structure.
The Merope 5 C first barnacle drops Yttrium from one of its spikes. Do all barnacles clusters drop the same rare material or is it different per cluster/planet?

EDIT: Oh yeah, the spikes pop with an effect that look similar to the UA. IMO there are too many similarities for these to be unconnected to the UA.
