Very tinfoil hat....
Could Caine Massey have been a shadow corporation trying to reuse old thargoid/alien tech to generate new weapons / defenses and it 'got away from them' and started getting out of control / because of its semi-organic nature ... could have intelligence

INRA is still around!!

Spiral.. as in a spiral milky way galaxy? points on a map? (though there should only be two main arms not three)

Just talking/writing out loud here, but perhaps that white plot is the rogue one (so is of consequence) as the other two are mirrored.

Like I say, just adding to the mystery with my ramblings ;)

Of course it's easy to correlate the spirally nature of these with the galactic spirals but actually spirals are pretty common in nature, both in plant and animal life.

If anything, this :

It could also be an interstellar starfish lurking under there with it's mouth pointing up. Starfish mouths are freaky.

Regarding the last two posts, I myself was just trying to decide if the Caine-Massey logo looks a little like what is on the Barnacle.

and with the spiral, it could also be something like this:

this is my first post, BTW, but I've been lurking since the beginning of #4

(Oh and I should point out MadDog posted the pics of the Yellow Caine-Massey crates back on page 415)

It looks like © symbol to me :)

Someone yesterday (I think-all these posts!!) remarked how similar the barnacle symbol is to the symbol on the Caine Massey crates at the crashed Anaconda; however in hindsight I am not convinced- if it was a brand then it would be exactly that- a brand mark- in which case I think it would be an exact replica of the Caine Massey symbol not just a resemblance; growth of the barnacle shell may cause some distortion but I suspect not what we see. It could be that the Caine Massey symbol is actually a stylised form of the barnacle symbol, in which case my hypothesis is that the barnacle symbol represents the origin (probably Witchhead nebula which is shown against Barnard's Loop & which was recently reported to have UA cargo convoys, echoing the sequence of events that led up to the Merope find) of the originators of the barnacle who have developed organic based technology. I seem to rememeber a Galnet speculation that some of the missing expeditions may have befriended Thargoids & developed joint technology. So my hypothesis may indicate the existence of some civilisation in the neighbourhood of the Witchhead.

The contra-indication for this hypothesis would seem to be the recent mention of new hyperdrive technologies in the pipeline, so we may have to travel further than the Witchhead to find them. Lots of storyline to come yet! Maybe the Distant Worlds Epedition will come across them - DWE wasn't formed on an FD suggestion was it by any chance?? ;)

I'm trying to get more people interested in the Yellow Crates as well.

See https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=224138

Yes I agree the crates are significant. Think about the timing- we get hints of Meta-alloys & Space Barnacles, then there is a huge grindfest to find them. A comment by MB "This is good thinking" on Squiggsy's suggestion that there was no reason for treating Merope in any special way in the search was misinterpreted (I don't think that MB was trying to mislead us in any way, it was a valid comment on a good bit of logic) by most of us as meaning that there were none there, which slowed down the search. So when we do find them suddently a lot are found (partially due to us now knowing what to look for) and then a ship in distress call which takes us directly to the Anaconda site with the Caine Massey crates. So I interpret all this as FD are trying to get us to catch up on the plot timeline 'cos we wasted so much time in finding the barnacles. I think these crates are a huge hint.
So, what about the info (I can't see your high res pix)- there is a number on the crate "MO (either letter or number?) -301377" which seems to have arrows either side highlighting it. Coordinates clue?

Yep, I'm in agreement, except that I kinda think its some secret INRA tech that was developed using what we learned from the Thargoids or something. Maybe this is really a plotline to lead us to Raxxla?

Or it's just aliens and the insignia is a message to us, like we put on the Voyager probes

Could be--"mess with these & look where we're going to probe you!" :D

Yes, I meant to ask this too.

Also, carrying a UA with meta alloys in the hold with it - do the ship modules still suffer degradation?

Someone did post that ship degredation still happens despite carrying both (so was surprised when the MAs were announced as the cure for station degredation), but I can't remember anyone posting about a UA scan of a ship carryin MA-would be a good experiment to do!

Is there anyone currently searching other nebulae for a barnacle sighting? I've spend the day Combing through T Tauri of the Hind nebula, all three landables show nothing, might be related to the fact they are low (<10%) metal content.

That's because the ship and its components aren't made out of meta-alloys...yet?

I just read that the Bubble Nebula used to have permit-restricted stars... but apparently no longer does...

The yellow crates have viewing windows into them (Possible live 'alien' cargo?) Lots of warnings. Do we know where Caine-Massey are based, do they have any planetary bases or stations we could go 'investigate with extreme prejudice' ?

I wonder about new galnet article Good News from Obsidian Orbital:

15 JAN 3302

Following yesterday's remarkable discovery of non-human structures in the Pleiades Nebula, starport markets have been inundated with meta-alloys – a mysterious material produced by the alien 'barnacles'. At present, very little is known about this commodity, but it seems it may have helped bring some stability to Obsidian Orbital, one of the starports affected by the mysterious malfunctions sweeping the galaxy. According to a recent statement, the station's technical team conducted an eleventh-hour experiment that, remarkably, seems to have improved things at the beleaguered starport:

"Things have gone from bad to worse recently, so when the meta-alloys started flooding in we thought...why not give it a shot? And somehow it seems to have worked. I don't know how the meta-alloys helped, exactly, but we think they're countering whatever it is that's causing the malfunctions. As soon as we have more concrete information, we'll let you know. For now we're remaining cautiously optimistic."

The exact cause of the technological 'plague' blighting the galaxy is still not known, so whether the meta-alloys represent a permanent solution can only be guessed. But many will be hoping that this breakthrough heralds the end of the mysterious malfunction epidemic.

  1. We bring UAs
  2. Stations getting major technical issues (or was it only everything related to electronics)
  3. We can get stations better by bringing in alien meta-alloys (and nobody knows why is it working like that and how it will affect these stations in the long run)

So, we play alien-made game, by alien-made rules and don't know anything beside 3 points above.

We need to keep one third of UA-affected stations as they are, another third should get more UAs on board. And only use meta-alloys for rest.
It's the only way to understand the effects of UAs and meta-alloys and if one of outcomes would prove unfavorable - we'd still have 2 thirds that can be saved.
