UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

Are UA's known to self-destruct? I had mine targeted and was taking some pictures and checking out it's alignment, accidently deployed weapons (but not fired) and 'poof' UA exploded.

Drop it from a spaceship and it degrades from 100% to 0%. At 0% it explodes. Drop from an SRV and it doesn't degrade. So which did you drop it from?

For those wanted to get a better handle on the different wave scanner sounds (including barnacles), this is a very useful site: http://wavescanner.net/
Cheers Laz

It's helpful but it only includes the up close sounds, not the sounds from a distance which for at least the barnacle is very different.

My hope is that this will speed up the process of finding alien objects in the future and maybe spur FD into coming up with some more interesting stuff to find on planets (with different wave scanner audio to go with it). Part of the fun for me is when I hear something on the wave scanner that I haven't heard before and then wondering at what it might be.

The long range sound on the barnacle is what I found most helpful. Those of us exploring have just been driving for days with no luck.

What if we are seeing is the tip of a massive structure?

Say this thing has been there 1000's of years under the dirt, and a recent meteor hit nearby uncovered the tip.

Just to make sure, since I missed some of the early barnacular developments, have all the different types of limpets been fired at/around barnacles without effect? I doubt FD would make such a punny secret (the animals called limpets look a bit like barnacles) but I felt the need to ask....

this is the type of free-association speculating I hate, so I feel like a hypocrite for even asking :/

One thing I find important to understand about the wave scanner is that things produce different audio based on distance. It is possible to detect things so far away that they don't appear as a visual indication on the scanner, but the sound will change as you get closer. It's not always a matter of volume and pitch - sometimes the waveform itself will change as well. This site is a good way to get the basics down, but I think the finer points will only come through practice and experience.

I hope this doesn't change - or if it does, FD expands on that, because anything that rewards skill and experience is a good thing. The fact that a barnacle sounds similar to many other sites at close range but very different and unique from a considerable distance is an interesting nuance that I think adds a nice dimension to the gameplay.

He doesn't get around much for a Palin and he doesn't talk much for an Ishmael, does he?

MY GOD YOU HAVE DISCOVERED IT! THE BARNACLES ARE THE IMMATURE SPAWN OF THE SPACE-WHALES AND YOU CAN SEE THEM FROM YOUR BACKYARD!

EDIT: I realized that the Brit Contingent might not understand my second line so, Sarah Palin, Russia, backyard, Trump... [watches everyone slowly back away] uh... nm :)

And yeah, I think all that Buggy bouncing's gone to my head.

No way! don't give up so easily, Michael Brooks, please let us figure this out on our own. It's only been a week!

I think it was made in reference to Riz's revelation about 3 barnies in one place.

But yes - rather than MB stepping in here and saying 'BUG CONFIRMED', it needs to be reported...

Well, once Riz has had his fill obviously, eh Riz? ;)

'The Barnacles send us their spawn to invade our planets. But they don't send their best. They send Meta-Alloy pushers, resource pilagers, station degraders... I'm gonna build a wall between the bubble and the Pleiades.. [Swishes ridiculous hair]'

Well something needs to be done. If this keeps up every station with a black market and some without are going to be infected. According to the latest Galnet article Robigo Mines in Robigo has been affected. This is a major source of income for commanders. I'd say we need to take some meta-alloys to some infected stations and see if they can help. I'd offer money for meta-alloys if I could. But with no credit transfer, that's not an option.

Was at the recent Exobiological Summit on Mars. Here is a slide from an interesting lecture on the Migratory Patterns of Astro-Cetaceans...

I had this on the scanner which looks very much like the signature for a barnacle according to the wavescanner site. Unfortunately it was just a crashed ship. The sound was not the same though.

Excuse the poor video, but has it been verified that this is indeed a bug??

Certain areas of the planet flash when in the shadow of it sister planet. I've only seen it happen in this system, which of course mean nothing. The planets do contain barnacles which is why it nags at me...

God*****...2 days after I got to work on the ship, we just coming in harbour and checking the news of it, I see 250+ plus pages on the forum and still 7 more days to go before I go home again. Hope I don't miss all the fun lol

That also looks like a Tea Factory and a Mining Site. In my experience, the visual tells you less than the audio, although in reality you kinda need them both.

Don't worry, I get the feeling we'll be working on this one for a while.
