Do these barnacles show up on SRV radar? I've been searching in Atlas and Pleione so far with no luck. Any idea what height/distance they are visible from?

Using that tool, there are two words that might be in there that caught my eye (still the 20x recording):
.- [.--.-.-.-...-.--.] .-.-...-.-.-. [warning]
.-. [--.-.-.-..] .-.--..-.-...-.-.-. [metal]

but those leave the rest without meaning... I need a longer recording. :p

using this message ....-.--.-.-.-.-.-..-.-.--.--....-..----..-.-.---
results in EMPIRE ENTER ESTATE MARKED MARKET STATE TAKEN

maybe that is the way. i dont know.

Yes they appear on SRV Radar as a differant pattern to others, and a different sound.
Visible from 4km or even higher if you know they are there. A normal human staring at a screen should fly at 1km or lower to have a realistic chance of spotting one. Too low and you get distracted/jaded by normal rocks, depends on your GPU.

I haven't been to any of the barnacle locations yet (hopefully going there tonight), so hopefully other Cmdrs with first hand experience will let you know if I'm wrong or add to my response. This is my understanding so far:
  • The barnacles do show up in the SRV sensors, but only when you are quite close to them (not sure about minimum distance, but I remember seeing a post by another Cmdr mentioning they didn't register until he was quite close).
  • You need to be flying at about 500m at the most. You can see them from farther away than that, but they will be so small that you probably won't be able to distinguish the barnacle from a rock. There's probably some give and take to this, depending on size & resolution of your screen.

I dunno about your graphics settings but on mine they 'sparkle' especially in the light side of a planet up to about 3km distance. It might be an individual pixel but it's obvious against the backdrop of rock. You want the fastest speed over the ground you can get to cover more ground. I use an Orca (348 m/sec).

Good to hear that. Will test it tonight when I go visit Barney. If it works for my setup it could save me a lot of time for future searches.

Just to double check what you wrote though... Did you actually mean to say they sparkle in the light side of planets? I would have assumed they'd be easier to spot in dark areas due to the green glow.

I put some pics up a few pages ago, I've not tried in absolute pitch black, just dark twilight.

It seems to me we are missing a vital part of this puzzle. We have lots of parts but nothing to bring them together (apart from wild theories).

  1. We have the UA that points are MEROPE, scans your ship and broadcasts a picture of it.
  2. We have MEROPE that is in the middle of all the UA's. A Barnacle was found there but by the sounds of it not the one that frontier were expecting us to find.
  3. We have Pleiades Sector JC-U B3-2 1 that has barnacles spread all over it and a crashed anaconda.
  4. We have a mysterious signal that we believe was broadcast from Pleiades Sector JC-U B3-2 1 but was that from the anaconda or a different source?
  5. We have failing and failed stations all over habitable space that *may* be the result of people selling UA's.. but there's been no proof that this is the case.
  6. We have the Antaries Hyperdrive malfunction that may be related (was it carrying a UA or a new drive powered by a UA?)
  7. Meta-Alloys seem to have fixed Obsidian Orbital (but how...)

There's nothing that brings all these things together we are just seeing pieces of the puzzle.

Normally in a game you know that you can go from a->b and that B will actually exist. We dont even know if the piece of the puzzle is actually in the game yet or if it's waiting for patch 2.1 or some background switch to be thrown to be in the game at a point determined by frontier. I know some people like to think that the looking is part of the game (even if there's nothing to look for). Me personally... I'd like to know if there's something to look for other than more identical barnacles that do nothing. The longer it goes on that nobody says that there's something to look for.. the more it makes me think that it's not in the game yet, because there's nothing to lose by saying 'yes there's more to look for' but everything to lose by saying 'no there's nothing there yet'.

I don't agree with saying there's nothing to lose by saying 'yes there's more to look for' All it does is encourage more people to ask for more hints all the time.

So what happened to the Barnacle at JC-U B3-2 21.93/96.98? It was there about a week ago, logged on today and it's gone. Cannot get it it Open/Private or Solo.

What gives?

OK what the heck is going on with Palin? You slag him off and then he pops up on Galnet. https://community.elitedangerous.com/galnet/uid/56a0efd59657ba7d3461ba05 and in it he asks for the Meta-Alloys to be delivered to his "new research base at Obsidian Orbital"

So it appears I wasted all that time over Christmas as he can't even be bothered to build the damn research outpost.

finally time for some scientific collaboration!
shame about the ground base, wonder if we'll ever see it or did he pocket the shelters?

I'm not in game so I can't check, but are they made of Lead? Might be easier than trying to nick it from church roofs :D
