Well, maybe they should have released two versions. One that improved on the DK2, but kept it within the $350 (75 hz) price range, and a premium headset for $600 (90hz). I know they were thinking that if we don't release this as perfect as we can get it, then VR will not take off. Unfortunately a high price and hardware requirements can have exactly the same affect.
If it was cheaper everyone and their dog would get them then have a bad experience by trying to run it on their best buy laptops that the salesman told them was "top of the range" and then vr would die or be set back a few years atleast. We already have gearvr and cardboard for low end cheap experiences. Vr will ultimately be adopted by the phone markets to start with until the costs of the tech and pc power come down.
Even at $600 there's already a ton of people who've preordered the rift and are hoping it will run on their hugely underpowered machines.
