NPC Radio Chatter - Video Sample

This was posted by someone else on these forums, but a lot of people on reddit have suggested I post this video here also.

It seems to have attracted quite a lot of attention, and I think is something most players are wanting to see developed.

What a great idea. +1

Just a thought, but for now, these voice samples could be randomly triggered around stations using Voiceattack. Maybe when using a "Request Docking" (or even something like "Open Station Comms" etc.) macro. You could record a whole bunch of them, save them as individual audio files and put them all in a folder, then set Voiceattack to play them randomly. It could be set to play a specific amount, or set to stop when you use another separate command (like, say "Raise Landing Gear" or "Engage Hyperdrive").

Could be cool until something like this is officially added to the game.

I like it immensely... no need for "real voice over talent", either. I would prefer sticking with "text to speech", provided that the actual ship (commander for now) names and landing pads match what's really happening.

In fact, I can't decide if your video isn't already doing that... are you by any chance "Gunship 0A9"?

Let's go a step further - can we have all communication currently in text form translated to speech? :D

This really is great idea +1 to this one.

Would feel really immersive to have station/System/planetary ATC.. Police communicating to you to perphaps ask to drop out of FSD for a scan instead of interdicyt and so forth.. Would really love to hear pirates threaten me as well and i see the potential plethora of stuff you can do with simple text to specch system if it also can be connected to game events.

It should be available as an option. The option should be in the main menu options and available from the cockpit.
It's a shame our craft do not have unique IDs as it would be nice to have the ATC verbally respond to your docking request with this ID directing you to your allotted pad.
One can also imagine a Commander waiting / hiding outside a station listening in on the ATC channel for a specific ship's ID that's just leaving the station.

TBH, I'd be happy if they would just add an interface to expose in-game state and events, and let the community build/modify the tools to enable all kinds of things.

I think I'd rather bind a key to turn it on/off.

Finally got around to watching the video. I am impressed, I was not aware that text-to-speech tech is so good now. FD could "just" (I know it is still quite some work) throw this into the game and have the existing comms chatter read out by the software. Could even work for other CMDRs (and choosing a voice could be part of the CMDR creator later down the road!). I honestly don't think this even needs real voice actors.

I would also point out that these are exactly the kind of stuff that should be available in every game from to start, not only as part of immersion but more importantly as a way to extent the accessibility of the game.

As a visually impaired person, i can very well play many games including elite quite well, but the lack of voice often makes many games unplayable as i cant read the smallest text at all and even the so,mewhat larger ones are hard and if i need to know a message gfrom game(NPC, system, etc) during action like a simple FSD trip in this game. i miss almost all the comm chatter that comes as text so text to speech would really make game much more playable (At least in the part where there is information on text during action).

Speech is important in many ways to us who cant see as well as "normal" person, this is why most games i play are made in the way that they are all voice acted so i can really play AND know why i do some missionor quest in any game. If i may give an example of this, i recently tried Final fantasy, realm reborn, the game felt very nice and i liked it... But the fact that all quests were only as text made me either read a simple mission for about 15 minutes or just ignore the mission text. Ignoring text is not really a option for me in these kinds of games as i really want to play the story of each game, this is why Elder scroll wwon the place over Final fantasy in that example.

Why i give that example, is because Elite also has some simple (Repetitive but still) missions texts that are spoken by individuals in game world, if this system would be extended to include these as well as an button to read a module descriptiuon and so forth, the game would be much more enjoyable as i could spent more ti,me actually playing rather than strugling to read stuff.

I must thank Frontier for the interface of onboard computers and interface in general as the text is quite clear and easy to read so in that part the game is well done :) It just would give morew accessibility and ease of use to have speech available in any part of game if so wished.

If there is real NPC avatars on stations one day that we go to end these mission we do now, i fo hope they are voice acted so i dont miss the story behimd missions. I often wonder why companies have to use expensive voice actors? Why cant they ask players to volunteer for this work? i have seen many great mods for some games that are made by modders and voluntary voice acting and i dare say that some of those free voice actors do much better job as paid voice actors in some cases.. Perphaps it is that the volunteer has more connection to the game that some individual whpo is paid to do the work.

I apologise if some of this was off topic but iu felt that it would fit well in this conversation.

I'm mostly deaf due to a brain tumor, and on the opposite side I really appreciate Elite's many visual indicators rather than making players rely on audio cues. Accessibility features often tend to get glossed over. +1 rep in solidarity!

i am glad it is working for you :) Even for visually impaired, i have to admit that interface is well done so that everything really important is easily seen without too much need to stick nose to my monitor here.

Fly safe!

A for effort, but I don't think this is something easily accomplished on FD's end. How long until stuff keeps repeating itself?

"Freelancer 1-1, you're cleared to dock".
"We don't run this base, but we have an understanding with the people who do".

Still got those and a couple more ringing in my ears.

To be fair traffic control in real-life is probably pretty repetitive as well.
Though with text-to-speech you could produce vast amounts of responses very easily which would help keep things varied.

CMDR CTCParadox

Indeed. Traffic control speech is pretty formulaic and it should not be hard to build a limited random dialogue variety generator around that. Some text could also be pulled from traffic reports and GalNet that are already on the station bulletin board to serve as announcements.

Little outlay in terms of effort; huge return in terms of game experience. Must happen.

Impressive job Vindicator! And we had quite the same idea. I did this video with atc comms few months ago:
