Distant Worlds - A journey beyond the Abyss

Sadly I then also crashed on take-off, due to the rookie-ist of mistakes "Not enough Thrust on a 1g world"!

Very sorry to hear about the accident! I hope you will be rejoining the fleet!

But say, do tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't this rather a case of applying reverse thrust rather than "not enough thrust?" If so and assuming you have set a toggle for reverse, maybe try changing the binding to hold rather than toggle. A few other commanders reported similar problems resulting in near death experiences, also caused by toggling reverse.

Hope to see you out there again soon!

Yowsa. Some great shots of the launch. Shame I missed it - I think i was about an hour late :( I spent the night 30ly away on one of the Jumponium planets....6 yttriums in about 20 minutes!

But to celebrate the departure in my own way.... I faceplanted a WW and knocked a few % off modules that I just repaired :/

Hope to catch up at the next WP (though RL is gonna make that hard this week)

In the official roster theres 13 of us, but as there has been ship changes and unstated cmdrs, theres most likely even more Pythons in the fleet.
We even had 3 Pythons at the same time at wp5. Go check out the "Python Pylots paintjobs" thread, there we try to arrange a groupshoot every now and then, so far no luck as always there someone missing. :D
Also, i had to take already a headstart to wp6 as i have to play XCOM2 next weekend.. ;)

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=221818

Feel free to friend me if you havent already, im with the same name in game. :)
Other active Python cmdrs in game: Kuroshio, Jackie Silver, Pirin and Eryn Liamson who i have stumbled upon.

Friends requests sent along!

See you in the black, Commanders. One day I hope to join a Wing in this game.

I also missed the departure.
Was really hoping to be back in time but for some reason had decided to drag my 44 year old carcass around a farm in the midlands.

Yep someone in Discord chat pointed that out too - I need to bind it to toggle instead.

Right then, new paintjob and I'll be catching you up.

Oh and here's the launch party from my instance - at least this vid cheers me up:

Edit - you can even see the fateful reverse-thrust is on in that vid as it's shot the camera below the surface.

I was the pilot of the unfortunate Conda that faceplanted into the crater. *hides in a corner* It was due to carelessness on my part. I was watching other CMDRs swooping down into the WP for landing and was enjoying the lively chat on Discord at the same time (don't text and fly!!), and next thing I knew, I was stuck in a nosedive and couldn't recover in time to break my fall. I hit the ground hard and bounced off with 42% hull, then tried circling back for a proper landing. By then I was shaken and out of sorts, and my ship was in bad shape. Sparks were flying and it was already smoking. I was feeling a bit wobbly and came down a little too hard again, and went kaboom. :( I guess I was a little too eager to join everyone at the rendezvous and paid for it with my life! And I haven't had much trouble landing on high g worlds since I set out on the expedition (I'd already landed there earlier without a hitch and managed a landing on a 2.8g world in CL Pismis 18 last night!), but that just shows one should never get too comfortable when out in the black.

That was me :(

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I wish you the best CMDR and hope you'll be able to rejoin the fleet soon! Fly safe! o7

I'm glad to hear that at least the rest of the fleet took off all right, though there seemed to be some server hiccups along the way. ;)

Some of the advance pilots who got there days earlier also had problems with crashes of ships and SRVs (ahem). I think NGC 6357 should be renamed the Bad Luck Nebula.

Already dubbed "Splash Point Charlie". Living up to it's name right up to the last...

Z...

I'm tellin' ya, there's something in that green fog for sure. It ain't safe. CMDR S0litaire suggested on Discord chat that it was all due to alien farts, and now I'm a believer. That stuff's intoxicating! Make sure to triple-filter your oxygen supply! (And remember, kids, don't text and fly! :p)

I truly appreciate all those who sent me kind words and I hope I'll be able to catch up with everyone soon as I haven't had this much fun since I started playing Elite. Godspeed, CMDRs! o7

Yeah looked liked what was happening to me when I crash landed after taking off from a 1G planet. I realised what was happening but couldn't really figure out whether I was in reverse or not.

I think crashing is something that can happen to anyone. I had to use boost a few times on Friday when flying around because I misjudged things.

I think extreme caution, watching the height, watching the vbar, landing like you've got your frail old granny in the back, is all in order from now on.
Landing though makes this journey so much more enjoyably challenging.

Going to enjoy a few days flying without worrying about planets.

If you are someone who wants or needs to travel ahead of the fleet, I have a proposal for you. Please keep reading. :)

I myself might be in trouble with regards to time to play over the next 2 months, hence why I might have to go my own way(in terms of when and how to procedd with DW)

BUT !!!! I totally disagree with your post above, If I continue on DW in my own time, to have felt like I did it like the rest of you I will be going to all the waypoints, and if they have still to be revealed by your good self, I will still go to the area in each waypoint, then on to the next.

I might get there before or after all of you, but I will get there
This is similar to the boat that I'm in. I signed up for a shorter expedition; one to which I could commit the time. Then it was extended and I can no longer commit to the full time. I thought I would still be able to scout ahead and provided Trello as a way to communicate that info, helping people avoid useless systems and identify likely candidates for prospecting. I intended to be a pure scout...log into a system, create a Trello card for it and move on. No prospecting and only minimal detailed scans. I don't feel that would have been disruptive for the general, but others are being disruptive, and to be fair it's because they are excited and eager.

So rules have been adopted, which I don't mind. But some of the disruption that is occurring is actually condoned behavior that isn't against the rules. In the 3 days between when we receive detailed coordinates and the actual rendezvous, the Rock Rats will have already uncovered a Green system or two. It's a statistical guarantee if they (or any group like them) do their thing.

Now I like those guys. I'm very happy that they're using Trello for good, and as a BRC racer and real-life team leader I can really appreciate the synergistic efficiency and dedicated teamwork that they're bringing to the expedition. But for the purposes of prospecting Green systems, giving them a 3 day head start might as well be giving them a 3 week head start, so we still end up with the problem of people feeling left out.

I may have a solution for that, which could help any expedition member who wants or needs to go faster.

It's occurred to me that this expedition has 2 goals, and they're actually in conflict:

  1. Lead people along a historical route, giving them a social reason to explore places they likely wouldn't have explored on their own.
  2. Establish a super-highway to the far galactic rim that's powered by Jumponium.
Obviously the historical route still needs Jumponium for ships that are sub-optimal for very long-dstance travel, but the historical route is not an optimal route to Beagle Point. In the following image, the green line is an optimal route from the Bubble to BP. The red line follows the main deviation from that route.

The blue line is my suggested route for an alternate, faster prospecting segment of the fleet.
(Thanks to the FGE for such an awesome poster!)
TO4PhKp.png
The red historical route is akin the US's famous Route 66; full of sights to see, but requiring a much slower, meandering trip. The blue route acts like the Interstate system, helping people get from points A to B as quickly and efficiently as possible (except for leaving Las Vegas on a Sunday).

Svenno Crossing is the ideal region for establishing a Green source of Jumponium, helping non-Anaconda ships get to Beagle Point along an optimal route. So because of the lengthened expedition timeframe that I can no longer commit to, that's where I'll be going.

Any who wants to join / follow / run ahead / spin Crazy Ivans around me, are welcome to do so. We can still contribute to a primary goal of Distant Worlds (the galactic super-highway); we can contribute to Erimus's Galactic Mapping project along the way to identify new POIs worth visiting; and we don't have to detract from the main expedition in the process.

Cmdrs Vespyr and mrchinchin25, sorry about your misfortune tonight. Hope you will be able to re-join the fleet soon!

It was like a warzone with two crashed ships and at least one more cmdr reporting 60%dmg to their srv.
My ship (seen briefly on mrchinchin25's video) was lucky enough to be between the two explosions but unaffected by either of them

Cmdrs,

While i am not part of the Distant Worlds journey i am making my own pilgrimage to the rim. i am on my way and 3500Ly out (not far i know) but i have fuel limpets aboard my Conda. your more than welcome to add me and if i am anywhere near any of you in the future and you need a bit of fuel then i will undoubtedly help. i am part of a 4 man party in condas heading rimwards.

Glad to hear you're OK and made it out of the 'carnage instance' in one piece! I'm 1000ly in on my catchup journey so far. Hopefully see you all soon!

I'm on the way :)

Left Jameson Memorial a few mins ago and have completed a quick 1000LY jump just to get out of the bubble. Decided to splash out and get the A7 fuel scoop. Hell's teeth! That thing scoops like nothing else - 1245/sec, it takes no time to fill, you're barely warm before you're prepping for the next jump.

Look out for the Gold Anaconda meeting up with you all soon.
