For me, the issue of whether Alpha 4.0 is Premium Beta 1 or not is moot.
Elite for me is "travel and trading", and David has been very clear from the start that the alpha / beta process is about gradually bringing more and more of the game together and testing.
So Premium Beta will be travel & trading, because that's what Elite is. Maybe larger & with more planets / stations.

it's more about when than what i think, we'd rather have an alpha 4 now than wait for whatever we get 2 weeks before beta which is in many's fan's eye still too far away(even though they're ready to wait).

Indeed, although it is you who have made the assumption that "the last alpha build" is Alpha 4.0. Michael did not explicitly say that.
Alpha phase 4 is last one. It will be last alpha build and last 4.0 point release (most likely 4.03).

That's not what he meant...he meant the "the last alpha build" could be 4.3, 4.4 or whatever...basically a Beta RC.
Michael still hasn't said when the "first Alpha 4 build" will come.

I was not hair splitting and was not inferring a version increment, merely pointing the possibility that Alpha 4.0 may not be the last Alpha revision to be released before the 16th of May.

Why would they then state that there will be 2 weeks of alpha testing before the premium beta people gets their version?
I think he meant that we will see 4.01, 4.02 and possibly 4.03 before rolling out last alpha 4 build as release candidate for premium beta.
