Done tastefully and in context, for example in stations advertising featuring Elite universe products sponsored by (paying advertiser) this could be very useful in the long run to support on-going development and maintenance of the game.

As long as any date capture is aggregate and no identifiable info is sold (things like IP are required to FD for area/country discrimination - no need to pass that on), no third party software installation or monitoring, and presentation is artful then I can live with this.

If anything remotely resembling adware is installed, then yes, FD should (and will) be roasted.

Thing is, some long term funding model is needed and this could be a possible and interesting method.

I'd have no problem with in-game advertising of products such as "The new Reidquat 5000 Extra Energy Unit - No other energy unit looks like it-- or lasts like it!"
Or " Compare the Anaconda.com"
Or SmegMeister Particle Beams! You know they make sense!"
But real-world (Earth, 21st century) should not appear.
Simples!

FD's silence on the matter speaks volumes, I'd say. So, yup, Space McNuggets, anyone?

Interesting to contrast their no-show here with how quickly that FD community manager appeared in that proposal request about being able to purchase planet names.

Daaaw, look, guys, Frontier's all grown up.

"Loitering inside the station is not permitted. Continuing to do so may result in the use of lethal force."

"I'M BARRY SCOTT"

"BANG! And the irritating advert is gone."

Perhaps adverts from ISIHAC - such as the one for Quillies throat lozenges :-

When your throat is dry and sore,
Go down to your Chemist store.
Don’t you all be silly billies,
Get fast relief when you suck Quillies.

I've no issues with this, I'm fairly certain FD will use the opportunity to make some cash, along with adding amusing content to the game, we could even have an in game advert collection challenge, get all the adverts of a certain product and you get a % discount on MKiii weapons for a day.
They get revenue from the advert
We get in game discounts

As long as its tastefully done, especially if it's just done on in-game billboards and made to appear in-universe, I don't have much of a problem with it.

Good:

McDonalds' logo, with the caption "Hungry? Visit Port Zelada McDonald's in section Epsilon, level 15, corridor B."

Bad:

McDonald's logo, with the caption, "Hungry? Visit (the McDonald's closest to my IP address)."

This game is going to include a persistent online universe, not to mention a fiction team, and that's going to cost money. This needs to be paid for somehow.

As the old saying goes, "There's no such thing as a free lunch." Ads are one way of paying for my own lunch.

I am not that bothered about in-game advertising. It is a facet of gaming nowadays that I have come to accept - as long as there are no ads during loading screens that interferes with gameplay, I will be happy.

Obviously, Frontier and FFE both had in-game fictional adverts: I distinctly remember seeing Jjagged Banner ads during docking procedures. If that is replaced with a thematically appropriate Coca Cola add, I do not mind.

(Grammar edit)

probably a lot of fuss over nothing.
I need to check some of my other games, but I think a lot of this is pretty standard.

If done in context it is fine. For instance lets say ATT which someone mentioned. The add could read, ATT your in-system communication of choice. I doubt advertising will go away in the future, so you make the add read as current. That add could show a planet with a ring around it and we have you covered. Coke machine may very well be available in the future or Pepsi. Ford may have an add for planetary travel in style. Etc... it will help fund the game.

If the adds are in context for the future of when the game is suppose to take place why not? They have adds now, just not inundate with a lot, 3 or 4 per station may work, with a real add or 2 and 2 fake. The realism crowd will know as this is a trading game, as well as exploration, pirating, bounty hunting etc... advertising is not going away in the future. So lets make use of it to fund the game, but keep adds relevant to the time frame of the game.

This kind of idea, I could tolerate. As you say the servers and wages need to be paid somehow. I think if we HAD to have adverts I'd much prefer them to be in the launcher only and nowhere near the game proper for exactly the bad example given. If there's no choice but to have advertising in-game though it would have to have an in-game context and mixed up with fictional company advertising as is in the starport now.

As for FD's silence, I don't blame them. I'd be lurking in this and the other relevant threads to see what the community will and won't accept and start making my super-evil plans to take over the world from there as well.

Looking at it from a personal and pragmatic stance, if in-game advertising meant no microtransaction shop then I'll reluctantly take the advertising. But then I'd much rather have the option of paying a small monthly subscription to make the advertising - or a microtransaction shop - disappear as well.

I agree. A quick google search showed that a lot of games have this clause in their EULA verbatim, and many of the games don't implement any in-game advertising. So I have no idea what FD have planned, but the clause doesn't necessarily mean there will be in-game advertising. It could just be non-applicable language they didn't bother drafting out.

The general principle of EULAs and indeed other similar contracts, is that you have to be able to handle almost any conceivable situation. Whether or not that situation actually occurs, or will occur, is another thing entirely. Viewing an EULA as a statement of intent can be misleading.

Some advertising in the game would be great. This will add to the immersion. But of course, the advertising on the fictitious brands. For example, "Buy two Cobra MK III for the price of one" (bad example ...).

I actually love the idea of in-game adverts that are themed in a non-immersion breaking way. Unless E: D is going to attract millions of players (I do hope so) I can't see a sustainable revenue stream for the continuing upkeep of the game. Maybe Frontier could give a choice to not see adverts/have IP etc. collected, and pay a monthly subscription instead - everyone's happy?!?

1. It's already known that there will be microtransactions (for credits and vanity items) plus possibly in-game advertisement as it turns out.

2. In my opinion monthly subscription is the one of the worst ideas I have read on this forum. Luckily it didn't come from any of the devs.
