Horizons How to complete surface rescue missions when the issuing faction turns hostile?

I took a "rescue mission" to find and return an occupied escape pod. After bumbling around on the surface for over an hour and finding lots of minerals, I finally found the escape pods.

Only trouble was, I had to shoot the sentries, and as a result I now have a bounty with the faction that issued the mission. The planetary base to which I have to return the mission is now showing red.

The mission times out in a couple of hours, the bounty in a day or so. So no waiting for it to expire.

Do I have to try and sneak into the base on silent running? This doesn't make sense.

Or did I retrieve the wrong pods?

Any suggestions?

Try to leave the planet and then come back. Sometimes they forget to shoot at you as you land after that.

Also it's not a bad idea, with such missions, to actually go and get to pods on different planet. :D
(btw. you don't have to search for it in SRV. Fly your ship at the 1500m altitude or higher, and blue POI circles will start to appear (you want your scanner range set to max) Just descent into the circles and look for the sites (It takes a little practice) once you found it, land, snatch the pod from under the sentries' noses (or whatever it is they have) and run. :)

Thanks for the reply and the suggestions. All a bit theoretical now - I had logged out to the menu in order to post the question. When I logged back in - with a couple of hours still to run on the mission - I got a "mission failed" message. I've encountered this bug before but thought that perhaps it might have been fixed in the last patch.

That is quite unfortunate. Yes I've had this happen to me, too, several times. Doesn't matter, though. Just take another Rescue mission and give them the pod you have. :)

You can still dock while you are wanted, I've done it. When I got to the outpost it was green and let me dock. As long as it isn't red you should be fine; if it is red, leave the planet and come back to try again.

Unlike stations I have never been scanned on a planet so far. Admittedly not landed that often by comparison but certainly been scanned and flagged for destruction (with my boarding privelleges revoked) crawling into a wanted station which gave me permission before they noticed me.

I did the same mission as yourself, and got a bounty (a tiny one) but managed to rush in and get permission to dock. I still have a spare escape pod if anyone needs one (seemed sad to just sell them on the market)

Leaving the planet (possibly system) and returning would have cleared my bounty at the time but I was in a rush to get moving on to maia

Depending on the size of the Trespass Zone and where exactly the Escape Pods are located, it's often possible to do a "Drive-by snatch" without shooting any Skimmers guarding it.

With a good highspeed-scoop, that's commonly a useful way to get stuff right under the Skimmers' noses :)
(should one get a Fine for violating the Trespass Zone, it'll remain one of these smaller "Clear on H-Jump" ones after a few Minutes - no more long-term Wanted in the System and they can be subsequently paid off)

I am in a wanted status after taking a mission to take down skimmers. I had no problem docking and taking and doing more missions. Some of the timers were 1 day one was a week. The base doesn't show red though so that is probably why nothing happens when I docked.

it's silly how you get bounty for doing their jobs.. hope this will get fixed in 2.1 because it totally makes no sense...

If one of the Station's Patrol fighters scan you - your docking clearance will be voided and all Fighters will open fire on you ;)
So be careful docking or undocking to/from a Station while Wanted there.

The mistake most make is deploying turret and then shooting down skimmers that's how you're getting hit with a bounty. Target skimmers before deploying turret and you will find that the skimmers are wanted then deploy turret (although not always necessary) and shoot them down. Viola! No bounty and you get 1k cr for each skimmer you shoot down. Hope that info helps.

that sounds like a broken mechanic to me. it shouldn't matter if I use the turret or shoot from the cockpit. needs reporting as a bug!

I really can't say if it is or isn't a bug. I figure it may not be 'cause you have to wait until the scan finishes before shooting fighters in space or you get slapped with a bounty even if they are wanted (kind of an assault thing). It may be working as intended. Just sayin'

My 2 Cents to these Missions:

1. Yes, they are bugged, most of the surface missions will time out early. So stack a few, don't take any below 2hrs.
Won't be fixed cause of 2.1 revamping the whole system.

2. As mentioned, scanning the skimmers before shooting them (from the ship, way faster and safer) will reveal a wanted state.
I just fly over the wreckage, then scan every skimmer, then blow them to pieces.

3. When you're not into collecting salvage or doing base assaults, bring dumbfire missiles. One easily kills them all if aimed right.

4. When you fly a bit away from the station(OC) they won't be hostile when you come back

5. When they are hostile(station red), quit to main menu, drop back in. When you're not in 'wanted' state, they'll be green again.

As you couldn't know it's wanted before actually scanning it, it could be a civilian, no?
Ask first, then shoot?

Just because my Asp has the pirate skin and onionhead decals that doesn't make me a criminal per se, no?
:D

if you look like a pirate but not wanted and I shoot you without scanning then I deserve to be punished. my question however was regarding shooting wanted targets....

If you scan them all before opening fire, and they reveal as wanted, you won't get a bounty on your head.
If that really happened, submit a bug.
If you missed to scan one of those skimmers and kill it, you get the bounty.
But it clearly doesn't matter if you're scanning / shooting outta the ship or srv.
