I just took the advice of a friend and tried plugging my PC into my 46" TV. Was previously using a 27" gaming monitor.
In a word: WOW.
Turns out I've been playing the game wrong for almost a year. Now I can see so much more, even at the same 1080 resolution. I am cleaning house in CQC. Exploration is a grand visual feast. And best of all, now that my screen is roughly "life-sized" I feel like I'm really in the cockpit! My stomach even drops when I buzz neutron stars or get too much air in my SRV. Head tracking works soooooo much better as well since I don't have to use my peripheral vision to look 90 deg anymore! I can just look at the top/right/left half of the screen! Actually look AT the screen to check my flanks. It's nothing short of game changing.
Its almost like having free VR, just by carrying my TV from the living room into the computer room.
