The Vive discussion Thread

i can believe it. I spent i think at my longest 8 hrs in my DK2 in ED (other than toilet and food breaks) and never felt sick. it all depends what you do in VR imo. but eye strain is far less of a problem in vr than it is working at a monitor.

Did you have to take a break due to "the emotional strains of the VR/real word disconnect"?

lol

a few years ago at the end of a rather large gaming session (before VR) I was driving home, and i swear to god for a split second i caught an impressive view of the sun setting over the fields and i looked at it and thought, wow those graphics are amazing.

my point is, gaming too long without breaks is probably not healthy, with or without VR.

take your breaks kids ;)

that being said, alien isolation is physically and mentally exhausting. VR sickness aside (and that title does give it me a bit) i can only play it for 30 mins at a time before needing a breather as it really takes it out of you. the logical part of my brain knows its not real, but that lizard part is a lot more compelling when you are being hunted by a xenomorph and you cant just look away from the screen

Vive is getting its own version of direct mode - http://www.roadtovr.com/steamvr-and-vive-pre-gets-direct-mode/
This is hardly unexpected, and given that Oculus have taken the step of removing extended mode it's plausible that Valve will do the same. The approach of Direct mode has a number of advantages, and it's important for VR to squeeze every last drop of performance out of the system.

This begs the question - Are FD actively working on Direct Mode support (for either device)?

$799 is a lot, totals $1100 here in Canada if it's true(seems like it is). It's a lot, more then the rift, but I know it is elite compatible, and I just got a bonus from work so........ I know what I'm spending my fun allowance on.

I was expecting $1000 US+, so consider this something of a bargain. The $200 premium over the rift seems completely reasonable given you get a pair of wireless VR controllers and the greater playing space.
Neither of those features make much difference to ED that you play seated and with HOTAS, but then ED doesn't support the rift...yet.
I guess if you're planning to play other games and you have the space then the Vive is a no-brainer. Valve haven't announced a Portal title for the Vive yet, but surely that can only be a matter of time....

Shipping date April 1st according to arstechnica. Could be in my hands in a matter of weeks. Not sure I can remain calm for that long.

Does anyone know does this 'direct mode' change the minimum specs for Elite. I see Frontier used to be saying you would need a gtx 980 minimum and Vive are now officially saying today that a gtx 970 is the minimum for their hardware. I have a 970 thats why i ask.

A 970 may give you a good experience, just not what FD consider a baseline. Most likely it will be fine for you...until those next gen GPUs are available ;)

Whelp, that's expensive, though I suppose it is hardware wise better then oculus, and it is the first edition of said hardware, but they are going to have to find a way to subsidize it, if they want many adopters, pc able to run it, + vr = high end luxury currently, which I guess holds true with most first gen stuff.

Actually its cheaper than the Rift. You get more for the $800, you get wgat you need, 2 controllers, 2 light houses and the VR set. If you get the Rift, you don't get the controllers, I am sure each will be minimum $150 each. Second, Vive can do everything Rift can but the Rift cannot do everything Vive can, That's huge for me.

Yeah, this is true, however if you only want the in chair vr experience and not walk around rift is what a lot will chose, where if you want the possibility of both then yeah, people will chose vive, problem is, walking around experience even with good controllers is very limited currently, though yeah, oculus when it gets controllers and whatnot will probably end up more expensive.

I failed to find a GBP price on the website. Anyone with more web-fu than me able to get one?

Just for, you know, knowledge and all.

Couldnt find an exact price but it works out at around £560.
Whats not clear yet is if that's plus shipping, customs duty etc. That added up on the cv1

Thanks for that. I am used to the usual $799 = £799 translation rates that happen on many things. This may preclude me dipping my toe in as an early adopter. Mind you, I have been working on my wife saying that VR can be good for some types of stress etc.

Usually the price for UK is $ converted to £, then add 20% VAT. This is then usually rounded up a bit.

So,

$799 ~= £560
VAT @20% ~= £112

So the total should be around £672. (I wouldn't be surprised if that is rounded up to £699.)

The only question is how much is added on for shipping?
HTC has well established, efficient, global distribution. So I would expect their shipping costs to be less than Oculus for the UK.

To be conservative in my estimates I would place shipping at about £50 (Although, I would expect it to be closer to half that)

So overall, I expect the vive with shipping and taxes for the UK to be in the range:
£699-£749

So if they do set the price with shipping + tax at £799 then it would really highlight that we are being ripped off in comparison with the states (which happens quite frequently)
