Test your PC to see if it can support VR

Here's my results...snip...
Thanks for the screen shots. I saw the performance monitor, and went and found it on the web. I ran the test with GPU Z running and saw this:

Those magenta peaks were odd because my fan speed never went above 50% ish. The GPU temp maxed out at 82C when throttling was indicated. That made me go looking for fan throttling software, and I found EVGA precision X. I couldn't immediately figure out how to set a fan curve, so I just set the fans at 100%. Wow, so that's what my fans at 100% sound like, haha.

I ran the steam test again, and while the results didn't change, the GPU temp never went above 63C and no GPU throttling.

These results (removed GPU throttling due to temp, but test results didn't change) make me wonder if I am more limited by CPU/system like Shad said. It might make sense given that the system originally had a 580 gtx in it. I upgraded the GPU, but nothing else.

FWIW, full system specs: i7 2700K at 3.5 Ghz, 780ti, Creative SB Z, 16 GB ram, Win 7 64 bit, Crucial M4 SSD 256 GB, Asus P8Z68 delux gen 3 MOBO.

Abil, did you also look at how much CPU was used e.g. in task manager? I note there's a fair bit of green in the limiting which is power. What's yellow?

I just tested my laptop. Scored 2.7. The utility mis-detected the GPU as Intel 530 but I could see it was correctly running on the GTX 970M. Not enough power it would seem. Laptop also has a i7-6700HQ in it. This was turbo-ing to over 3 GHz and peak usage was about 2 threads worth. GPU ram topped out at 2.7 GB. No limiting was reported here. Just not powerful enough to!

Use -multigpu in the program command line options (right-click on program name on left side -> properties -> set launch options).

Ran it on another system with my old R9 280X. That also got 2.7, topping out around 3GB but didn't seem to get too hot at least. Since I had to VNC into it to start it going, I didn't look at the stats in real time, only when I went back in later.

Remember the test is related to Vive VR performance in mind, but obviously is very close to Oculus's.

Oh and don't forget to try the MultiGPU option to see what the outcome would be if this was turned on in VR... Interesting results!

I ran the test again with task manager pulled up. CPU usage never went above 25%.

The GPUz 'PerfCap' Reason usually stayed on "wr", "VRel", and "VOp" all at the same time. I have no clue what those are.

I don't get it, really. If my CPU isn't the bottleneck, and the 780ti is about the same as a 970 (it is), does that imply my system would be in the "Ready" region with just a 980ti upgrade? I find that hard to believe, and makes me further question the usefulness of the test.

There is a bit of danger in comparing across generations, in that while at a given task they may appear similar performance, that could vary with different tasks. For CPU performance, they do add the disclaimer that they only use what is required to do the display. They don't allow for whatever else the software might also have to do with the CPU, and that may be significant also.

As for the GPU limitations, that's power and voltage. So that GPU is basically reporting it is at its limit.

Buying vive and have to survive till pascal with 780s SLI, at least this test gave me a bit of optimism, had a hard times resisting spending my food budget for 980Ti today

Single 290X and 5930 Hexacore (overclocked to 4.4GHZ) holding up pretty nicely. I expected it to not be the best with this GPU, waiting for MAD Polaris or nVidia Pascal architecture.

My rig with new stock 980Ti outperformed a stock Titan X? Chuffed about that. :)

It's literally dialed up to 11. :D

So the benchmark does not work for SLI, does this mean it is useless to have an SLI with Vive VR (not supported) or it is just the benchmark that doesn't support SLi ?

(i have a dual msi 970 watercooled)
