[Distant Worlds] Be right back!

Yes I'm a true Renaissance nerd. My California girl mostly appreciates me for my cookie recipes though ;). She's into North African hip hop (not cello) and doesn't play CQC. But we make it work somehow. Lol.

Yeah, strangely enough, my ability to fly a virtual starship through an endless procedurally generated spacescape is not one of the reasons for the German spouse to be here. Except that I am apparently able to show a lot of dedication to strange endeavors.

I think this is the one talent that really separates people like us from "normals". ;)

Wouldn't want to miss it. :) (It's also a surprisingly good ability to have for parenthood. Though I've learned that trying to min/max your children is frowned upon.)

At what hull percentage would you head home?

I slammed into a planet and I'm now down to 56% hull at WP 13. I think I could get in about 4klys a day just scoop and jump so that's 2 weeks to get to the bubble and back but I'm going away for a week in 10 days time.

Would you head back or carry on and be careful in my position?

56% is more than enough to make it though. Just avoid high g and keep 4 pips to shields any time you touch down. Besides, once you race back, you may not have it in you to trek the ~40KLY to get back. Remember the fleet may be another 14 KLY ahead of their current position by then

Carry on.

Imagine if you did that then dented your ship after doing that. I bet you will be double checking everything you do near a planet with a lower number next to your hull

For the second time this week I slammed myself into a planet a bit too hardly and crashed my ship, so it's another return back to the bubble for me.
It's also gonna be the second time this week I'll buckyball to catch up the fleet, this time expecting to make it to WP15 in less than 20 hours (previous one was 34 hours including sleep and off-time).
Main difference this time : no wayback possibilities as there's 500CR left in the pocket.

See you on the other side ! o7

This is a farewell:

I enjoyed the company of the DW-Fleet for a good part of the way but have now decided to turn my ship homewards. Sudden bursts of spacemadness and homesickness got the better of me and so I have to bid my farewell to all the commanders of this awesome fleet. Also I dont have the confidence that I would be able to complete the whole journey in one piece and I really want to bring home the big heap of exploration data I have collected so far.

This has been my first true exploration trip and shure was not my last. The fleet made it a pleasure also for starting exploreres to participate. In spite of a lethal crash on Drakes Ridge (WP05) I have returned from the bubble with a new ship for a second attempt and made it until Sagittarius A* just in time for one of the midway gatherings on Armstrongs Landing.

the red asp in the middle is me ;)

But now I have to give up the venture to reach the far rim of the galaxy and leave this for those more seasoned and more determined pilots - to those explorers who really deserve the honour to be called the vanguard of spacefarers, those pilots brave, smart, careful and experienced enough who will with no doubt reach theire destination Beaglepoint.

It was a joyful travel and I have to thank Cmdr Elith who started the voyage at the same time from Pallaeni and kept a regular contact and Cmdr Aironskin who gave me first advice for the way. Also I have learnt much about the galaxy and the art of exploration from all the thoughtfully assembled tutorials and explanations from Dr. Kai, Erimus, the Fuel Rats, the Rock Rats and all Cmdrs on Discord who shared theire knowledge about all aspects of exploring and prospecting. Also I have to thank Cmdr Jindrolim who shared some fuel-limpets with me. Maybe they can still be of some use to help out some stranded explorers on my way back home... who knows.

Now that I take the lonesome route back to the bubble I am the more happy that WASP-Radio is on air and all the nice folks at the Wasp-Discord Channel are rocking the show. I wish you Cmdr Zelrym a fast transit back to the fleet after your accident. It shocked me when I read about it in the last newsletter (and my respect for carrying on). Special thanks to Cmdr Vespera, Qohen Leth, and iDragox for keeping the music playing!

Long words short: It was great to fly with the fleet. Thanks for all the good company. May you all have good times and reach the destination of your dreams!

Last I leave a link to a forum thread from GluttonyFang that has a link to a document of his where he writes about many good ideas for this game - also for exploring. Just in case some want to have a good read about the game ;)

ISHAP Fleet has re-assembled at WP14, after a hard trek to the bubble and back.

Now that I see the picture, 2 matching Anaconda's would have looked even better. Ah, well, next time...

Good effort! Your post has made me seriously think about heading back (it's been on my mind a lot recently as I've struggled to find time to keep up). Glad somebody owned up to it being too arduous a task - I might follow you very soon!

Friday 26th Feb 15.30pm leave WP 13 to explore local systems. 15.35 destroy Holly the Asp by not paying attention on a high g world.
Sunday 28th Feb 21.00pm arrive WP14 after a slight detour of about 30,000ly.
21.02pm set off for WP15 only 3 hours late, hoping someone is still there.

Made a 20 KLY reverse buckyball run to participate in the explorer CG and refit my ship. Got there in the nick of time to nab a 24 million CR bonus and a gold paintjob :D I was planning on staying in the bubble for a few days, but after just a couple hours, I am feeling boxed in. This is very strange because when I started DW, I felt like I was flying off the edge of the map into "nowhere." But after rediscovering the secret life of science in the galaxy map (thanks mostly to Jackie Silver), I don't want to be anywhere else except out there in the black now. :)

Hope you're recovering well. :)

Thanks Jhyrryl! I figured out how to fly with one arm using my kb and joystick ;)

Keeping throttle on 100% the whole time. But actually after going 20klies in 18 hours (including sleep), I need a bit of time to mentally recuperate. Very glad to be upgrading from 27LY range to 34.8LY :D It will actually shave about 12-14 hours off my DW travel time, even with the backtracking.

That is a difference indeed. In fact even small increases in jump range seems to please the route planner; the difference between 34 & 35.5 Ly is significant somehow, I noticed consistently better plots for the 35.5 range than the 34. After a trek of 6KLy, the 34Ly version was 700Ly behind. Plots even in the core were sub-par to the 35.5Ly which got hit much more often. I'm sure there's an explanation somewhere.

Speedy recovery of you arm. Enjoying your new hardware?

So I crashed...

After a couple of weeks doing my own stuff (ooc: Vacationing in Hawaii), I was rushing to catch up to the rest of expedition.

After two sessions (sunday and monday) fast-travelling through and visiting the camps for waypoints 9, 10, 11 including Sag A* and 12, only stopping for earthlikes and such, I was ready for WP 13.

I took off from the nice pointy cliff at Gagarin's Reach, diving down the canyon, wanting a last ride before travelling on.

Down there, not thinking too straight, I made an impulsive decision to swerve right to ascend along a rough looking cleft - Didn't judge the inertia right, and got thrown into the cliffside.

Hull at 38%...could have handled that, but the canopy was gone as well...So this was it.

With five minutes of life support left, somewhat stunned, I thought about dropping out in an SRV and dismissing the ship and wait it out. But that would be a real sad and lonely story, so I chose otherwise...

Back at the bubble I found myself at some starport on some planet, where I apparently stocked up the last of my supplies before taking off for the expedition. Feeling rather down and angry at myself, I immediately took off, wanting to get on my way again, after all I now had 44.000 ly to catch up instead og 12.000...

I then caught myself, stopped and returned to the starport to get restocked...and calm down.

I took a bit of time to think about if I wanted to put all that time in again to catch up.

Alternatively I could set out to recover the most interesting of my data. There was the ringed earthlike with a ringed moon, the eartlike orbiting a waterworld, the earthlike in a white dwarf system and all the other goodies.

I came to the conclusion, that I did want to catch up, and took off for real, starting to speed-travel, making a beeline for waypoint 13 since I still want to visit all camps. This time I was not stopping for anything but scooping.

Now, after two more sessions (tuesday and wednesday) and about 11.000 ly out, I am struggling to keep my motivation going. The routine of "jump - throttle down - check star - adjust accordingly - throttle up - honk - scoop if possible - jump" is getting on my nerves.

I am an explorer, I want to stop and explore, check out that ring, scan that earthlike or water world, land on that big landable, and generally see all the amazing stuff that is there.

But I am not doing that speeding like this. I am not even looking at the system maps now because I know I will not be able to resist. And if I do not, I will not have time to catch up.

And I want to catch up. To be there when history is made, enjoy the camaraderie at the camps, travel further than was possible for Erimus on his first expedition, and also actually do some prospecting...

I might soldier through this and catch up at some waypoint or other, but right now it is a struggle with tediousness and I feel myself wavering.

Wish me the luck - or rather the will and stubbornness - to finish this and I will see you out there.
