Resetting your save - did you ever regret it?

Did'nt use the delete save option, but i wanted to Start again and role play a different character entire from the Trading Cmdr Wasp0, so i bought another Cmdr and did it that way!
I must admit i play my 2nd Cmdr more than Cmdr Wasp0..... Hmmm Interesting!!

same here.

I bought it when it was on offer for £9.99 ;) even better deal!

same here.

OP, i would consider that, get a second copy of the base-game, wait till there is a sale if you have time to wait, start a new-commander. if you like it, reset your main save.

i'm having a blast with my second commander (who doesn't have horizons, which is a little bit sad... maybe this is gonna change at some point), flying small ships, this time i did all the ranking i did and getting CR by combat mainly (i'm not so much into combat - but by now both accounts are dangerous :) ), also did a criminal pve career - getting hostile to factions and all.

but resetting my save isn't really an option for me for four reasons: a) exploration, first discovered by (yeah, silly) b) higher navy ranks (no way I'll rank for more than a courier on my second account) c) permits d) CR - there are some situation on my second account, mainly around influencing the BGS, where i miss all the large ships i have, and especially all my CR.

Maybe spend a few quid and buy a second account. play that, but leave your old commander safe. Understand this will leave you with an alt...

I invested large time frame on getting all the ships I was interested in, especially the cutter.

Do you honestly think I would restart my save? Nope!
I would just play on my alternative profile (xbox 1)

Actually reset my save a few times..mostly to test the different (KS) starting options. Most I had was a fully specced T6, so nothing THAT big. At the start of Horizons I had a conda and went for a (very) soft-reset: spend all my credits on outfitting till I had about 1000 credits and a sidewinder left, and stored all my other ships in a far location. Flew my stock sidewinder to the Horizons start location and started playing again. Now only just in a A rated Cobra Mk3 but with 30 mil in assets. Didnt lose my rank progress and permits, but got to experience a fresh start again.

Thank you for the answers, guys! Interesting reads and worthwhile suggestions, so far! :)

As for the reason for my "death-"(and rebirth) whish: I absolutely feel like BadassPreacher. The struggle in the beginning is very interesting and oftentimes the best part of a game ("a" and not "the", as this is true for me for other games as well, be it RPGs or strategy games like Civilization). When I had finally enough credits to buy a Python (my most desired ship at this time), I hesitated to do so, as it would mean the loss of a goal to strive for. The same with my 'elite' combat rank: When I came close to it, I went to conflict zones, eager to hunt down only 'elite' AI pilots for the highest gain. And when the "right on, commander!" finally was displayed: euphoric satisfaction... followed by a weird feeling of sadness and loss.

As for getting a second copy: Indeed a good suggestion!

Unfortunately, I don't think, it would work for me.
First of all, I wouldn't be willing to abstain from 'Horizons'. And with it, it would be indeed a second full-price purchase.
Secondly, I have bought quite some paintjobs and love the "midnight black" theme that came with 'Horizons'-preorders. All of this wouldn't be available in a second account.
And ultimately (but this is really a very personal "Deggial-thing"!), while having a backup is the very idea of it, the possible fallback-position would diminish the feeling of... severity(?)... impact(?). Hard to describe, even in my native tongue. But maybe you know what I mean...

I did a 1.3 clear save and a 2.0 clear save, never regretted either
.
at 1.3 I'd JUST got to anaconda at 2.0 I had a miner python and JUST got a type 9.
.
Now I have to say in my 1.3 game I went all out to get the best ship I could as quickly as possible
.
my 2.0 game I started to think a little more about specialising my ships
.
But in both cases I never really made my ship the best it could be before changing ships
.
This time I am finding I am more free in my play I don't really car about charging to a ASP and then a type 7 and having to go tonto to try and get the cash for a python Im building ships that make sense and doing things that most people wont think make sense - I will jump in a cobra and zip around planets scavenging and love it - why a cobra well anything bigger isn't any good at scavenging so I make my cobra the best I can, or I do a bot of trading sometimes - but Im not bothered that I have enough for the nexty ship Ill stick with what I have.
.
I'd like FD to do something clever - launch a new ship that is quite good but then state that flying regulations only allow commanders who joined the pilot federation after 1 Apr 3302 to fly it (ie 1 month hence) if you don't want it that's ok but if you do you would have to clear save
.
Your progress from clear save is rapid - you have so much knowledge of the game so I heartily recommend it

this is exactly my plan :) albeit with using the impeagle

When the Horizons beta dropped I deleted my save game on the beta to try out the NPE as per the request of the developers. I had an enormously great time, but after making my first couple million I found myself desperately wanting all my ships back as I was exclusively playing Horizons during the beta and not touching the live server at all.

At the time I was Dangerous/Tycoon with a big chunk of ships, collected powerplay goodies etc and most of my ships fully A-rated. From my perspective there gets to a point where your knowledge is sufficient enough to be extremely efficient. However the ships you use for those tasks act as amplifiers to your personal efficiency and after the new CMDR vibe wears off I found myself desiring all that back as I felt my efforts weren't being rewarded.

That's not to say though that it's not immensely fun to play the NPE. I'd recommend an alternate account. However if you do decide to wipe your save I enjoyed playing the Horizons start and focused on salvaging ground based POI's to make my money. It was pretty fast when you have your pre-existing knowledge to work from and really very fun. Almost as if your first commander was sim hours.

Whichever choice you make, enjoy! I know I'll not delete my primary CMDR.

EDIT: Oh, and I used to have another CMDR, but deleted it when I lost my first Python to insufficient insurance. I still had a couple million in the bank but wiped my save anyways. Didn't regret that one bit.

a) exploration, first discovered by (yeah, silly)

Wait, wait, wait... WHAT?

Not silly at all, but a serious concern! I hope, you don't want to imply that, by resetting a commander, all his 'first discovered by'-tags are resetted, too? I have some earthlikes with my name on them! I want them to stay!

no they are safe, but they will not change name when you change your CMDR name.... by resetting you are "killing" your current guy but he still existed, so his/her discoveries are still his/her's

In order to get the "full VR experience", I decided to start from the zero-point: a Sidewinder and 1000 credits.
My reasoning is, that this will refresh my curiosity about every new ship. "How will it feel in VR? - I have to earn enough cash and reputation to get access!"

On the other hand, I am a little bit frightened about this step! There is no going back!
Will the fascination of the "first playthrough" that carried me over some (admittedly existent) lean periods kick in again?
Will I look back on all I had achieved and feel repulsed by the fact that I have to do it again?
Will I which I still had all the rare materials I gathered in light-year long expeditions to be prepared for the engineers needs?
Will I sit in my DBS when I face my first Thargoid cruiser, whishing back my FAS or A-rated Python?

IMHO :
- the VR experience will work just fine without resetting anything
- you'll quickly find that you not only repeat everything (ending up doing the exact thing you tried to avoid)
- even worse, you'll quickly find out you'll automatically apply all your skills and knowledge to progress in the optimal manner
-> only this time, it'll feel even more repetitive and grindy than before. You've been there before and you'll know.

After all, the skills and knowledge how to do things can't be wiped.
And by the time you sit in your DBX, you'll realize it's still a long way until there's something to be found out there - let alone anything finding you. You'll do the exact same thing you did until now with at best minimal changes.

Hard to tell what the Engineers will require - but chances are on many of them you're expected to have some of the ranks you just threw away.

Personally, I'd never do it. No reason, as there is no way to "relive the old days".
Also keep in mind, in the old days when everyone was starting it was a far more social experience. Not anymore. These days are over.

@ Mad Mike: Phew! That's not an issue, then. I would choose exactly the same cmdr name anyway.

@ FalconFly: Good points, indeed very good points. And quite spot-on to my fears. Only in respect to the VR experience, I tend to differ. With all the ships available, I would only hop in one after the other and think "Oh, looks good! Next!". After a reset, each new ship (= VR experience) would be another goal to strive for and I would be "forced" to spend some time in it.

Think about the time you've invested. Think about how much you'd charge someone for that amount of time. Compare that figure to the cost of a second copy. Put the mouse down and step away from the button.

Can I suggest you wait for the next beta, then reset and try it there? If you like the taste, pull the trigger in the real game. I'll be doing a reset in the next beta.

Yeah I do regret it as I lost my pass to the founders world!

is that because you got it due to being elite, or though a bug you got it in error?

because if you got it as a KSer then you should still have it. put in a bug report if so

btw, founders access is largely irrelavent now anyhow.

plenty of systems offer bigger ship discounts and bigger gear discounts.

The advantage is that it has everything in stock :)
