Exploring is turning my brain to mush.

When it is one third of the game, yes most people should enjoy doing it. Obviously you will never satisfy 100% of people but as it stands now the people who enjoy exploring are *probably* in the minority by a fair bit. I liken it to the red headed step child class in other games where there is one class that is poorly designed or boring to play that only is played by the fringe minority.

It is only "one third of the game" if you choose to make it so. You can make it all of the game. Or none of it.

Actually, it is a quarter of the game. We have Elite in Arena too you know. Oh and by the way, Arena is ONE thing you can do while out exploring if you fancy a change. I do this from time to time as do many other explorers.

The red headed child remark was a bit harsh, though plainly true.

It means the area is new to your ship's navigation computer...

Oh I know, that was a bit of sarcasm. But somehow my ship knows someone else explored it?? It just not very logical to me. Maybe it is just semantics but perhaps the label should be changed. Perhaps "data unavailable" when it's been discovered and "unexplored" when no one has ever explored it.

Everything in this game can be boring if repeated again and again - merit farming, doing missions, RES, another Robigo run, mining, exploration.

But if you do a bit of everything then maybe you won't get sick of one of them.

I don't mind a 1-2 week exploration once every 3 months or so, but I cannot understand how some people can do it for months. I just love a variety, I hate repetitive things for long periods of time.

Ahh right you are. Don't get me started on Arena. Another poorly designed feature. In every other game I've played I could continue playing the base game and queue for PvP or Arena combat. Why they just kinda added it on makes no sense to me and is part of the reason it is hard to get a match a good portion of the time.

And don't get me wrong I do enjoy this game (and I really want to enjoy exploring, it's one of the things that really interested me, until I did it) but right now there are several aspects that seem to be held together by some string and duct tape.

TBH I've had more pleasurable hours in visits to the dentist.

I am only 2,500 LY from "Home" and already I am sick to death of it.

Oh well, only 5 more levels till that elusive 3rd Elite. :D

+1 Commander!

Not being derogatory, but that made me LMAO!!! [up]

Worry not, the first 3 go pretty quick, the 4 ain't that bad either, but just wait for the final push!!

One thing that helps is to stop every couple of hundred Lys and go for a drive.

Best of luck in your travels Commander!

Hmmm, then it is a shame you don't. I find the first couple of thousand light years boring. Well actually there a periods of boredom all the time you are out. I mean, half an hour of M class stars hugged by tedious strings of rocky ice worlds is always going to be boring. Maybe you should ask what you want from exploration to make it rewarding. For me, my first trip was to SagA and that was really boring in parts, especially the last 8000LY home. However, I am still pretty stoked at having made it there and also the system I found with six water worlds in it that now bear my name. My current trip out I found a ringed earth like world with a moon close by which I landed on and drove around for a while looking for a cool shot. For me that was a reward but I think it is important to not have expectations as such. Things turn up when you don't expect it but if you are looking for anything in particular, perhaps it will always be disappointing. Maybe just browse the exploration forum, somebody is always doing something weird in there like the guy who just made it across the 65000LY line in a sidewinder or the group of six who attempted climbing a high mountain in their SRV's.

Or maybe exploration, or wandering around in mountains is not for you. That's Ok too.

It's a very simple and concise way to let you know that you are NOT the first person to discover the system, anything else would leave people upset, frustrated and angry that the system lied to them.

Exploration is one of those things that many people, not just a few of us, enjoy in the game. We'd love for it to be a little more indepth, but that doesn't mean 'more profitable', it means making exploration harder and more challenging, make it take more time and some effort. We enjoy that every system is unique and different from every other system, never know what you'll find.

How many of you think every system is the same? Nothing but making exploration pay a hell of a lot more than it does now will EVER get you liking exploration, you don't want to explore, you want to make more credits, that's all, so go check the exploration section of the forums, neutron field guide, seriously, it'll get you through to Elite in a very short time compared to randomly wandering the galaxy. Only 100s of millions of those neutron stars per field, so you've got a good chance of finding lots of undiscovered ones, which pay really nicely, so you'll get to Elite much quicker. 35k typically, Elite Explorer requires 168m data sold, that's the quickest way to get there.

Exploration is what it is for now, love for it to be more indepth and complicated, but the payout is just fine to me, don't do it to get rich, for that I've got a little 1 jump 10m/hr trade run in the bubble, pays for my jaunts into the Black and then some.

The scale and potential for exploration is one of the main things that drew me to this game. The first time I opened the galaxy map and was able to zoom out and see the whole milky way gave me a feeling I just can't describe. The thought of being able to go to nearly any of those stars or areas of the galaxy is just awesome. The devil is in the details though. I can spend a week going to Sag A*, but what do I do when I get there? Spend another week coming back? The detail scanning mechanic is just not up to par IMO. Once I jump into a system I want to make decisions. Is it a system that's worth my time? I'd be fine with most systems being boring systems (look at the map and not see anything terribly interesting), but some systems should be more interesting (and valuable)!

Example: Jump into a system, honk and open the system map. See something that looks interesting (ELW, terraformable, pretty color gas giant or whatever). SC over to it and do a short range scan to verify your hypothesis. Then you have a planetary scanner that requires an orbital scan, enter orbital cruise and do an orbit or two for map completion. It generates topographical maps, reveals signal sources, mineral deposits, etc. After that you can decide if you want to land or not. The whole idea is to make the maps and follow them to treasures if you so choose.

Exploration IMO should be in large part about making actual maps and then sharing the data with others (after you've made your money, of course) I won't talk about the payouts. I will just say I think they should be higher for certain discoveries.

Fly safe.

Nice ideas, but there's one thing you may not have noticed, many don't, and that's you can get an idea of what sort of planets are in a system by listening to them sing in the system map, as each planet type has it's own unique sounds tied to it. Doesn't always tell you which little ball of rock and ice might be a terraformable world, but it will tell you if that little ball is a waterworld, earthlike, a gas giant with life on it, and high metal content, and they are also really cool to listen to on top of that.

There's an actual guide for the sounds in the exploration section as well, along with some other guides for the best 'normal' locations for terraforms, earthlikes, waterworld, etc.

How ever did they imagine this was an engaging pastime?
TBH I've had more pleasurable hours in visits to the dentist.
Mind-numbingly repetitive (far worse that trading), less financially rewarding, and oh so deadly dull.
The fixed minimum-wait time for scans is brutal. Worst of all, there is no gauge of progress until you return all the way back to civilisation to turn your data in, surely there could/should be an indicator to say "If you turn in all your current data successfully your progress will be "X"?
I am only 2,500 LY from "Home" and already I am sick to death of it.
The Galaxy map is an "acquired taste" I think. Getting progress towards the core seems to be an art all in its self.

Probably been said before, but might I humbly suggest you are exploring for the wrong reason. Don't do it to just to get a rank. Do it because the galaxy calls to you. Do it because you want to explore. Personally - I explore to chill out and eventually get to places I want to see and perchance tag my name on a new system. It's the Bubble Nebula next for me but I'm in no rush.
-
Alternatively, grind that foghorn and push to Elite. Get ready for Ranger and Pioneer to be a long ride though.

My only Elite rank is exploration. I loved it, 5 months of a relaxing journey, no worries, except the NS.
It's not for everyone, but then, it's been 15 months, and I cannot seem to pew-pew past 'Dangerous' as I find it really dull...

It CAN get worse: You decide to write a blog about it and bore people to death with it.

That made me laugh.

I would very much like to thank all the Cmdr's for their input to this thread.

It is true that pure exploring for exploring's sake may not be for everyone, but what a lovely positive bunch of people to have in the ED family.

I have been very much encouraged by al of the +ve vibes.

Sadly, my ship (solely through the fault of her Cmdr) has reached a point where I need to turn back for "home" and for repairs.

So, I shall try to "gently" return to the relative safety of the bubble and cash in my explorer (exploder?) chips.

What the OP calls mind-numbing, I call calming.

Been out over a year exploring, am 15K ly from Sol and still heading away from core space. :D

Ok, I salute you for that, I honestly do. Those that found their niche in the game early on are more likely to get satisfaction from this game long after most have left. They will still be there in the void doing their screenshots, and scans and charting systems 60,000 Ly from Sol long after anyone else.

But please don't excluded us from the game, the general consensus is that it's boring. You can't hide from that fact. I get the feeling people feel offended by people saying it's boring, that's fine, carry on doing what you are doing. We are just asking as a player base for improvements to be made. Don't deny us that.

Lol, I managed to use 'us' and 'we' in a statement without a massive backlash :D +Rep to me.
