Pricing question

Are there going to be DLC for this game? and if so, will it be free? Only reason I ask is that if not (I'm sure not) is that I'd rather get Star Citizen since it has free expansions. Not to say this game looks bad of course

There will be expansions and, unless you're an Alpha or Premium Beta backer, you'll have to pay for them.

Alpha and Premium Beta include all future major expansions, however they are quite expensive £200 and £100 correspondingly. However, you can pre-order Elite:Dangerous for 40EUR and expansion pass for additional 40EUR, 80EUR total.

Standart Beta does not include expansion pass.

Take into account that while SC is cheaper $40.00 for the game and beta access, you will probably have to pay $5.00 for participating in each major Alpha release.

Also a moderate PC is enough to play Elite:Dangerous, e.g. there are reports that GTX 460 allows achieving decent performance at 1920x1080 with maxed graphics.

At the same time there are speculations that GTX780 will be required to play SC DFM at medium quality. GTX780 provides 50-70FPS in hangar module at highest graphic settings.

You need to take into consideration the way both games have gone about their respective fundraising campaigns and what effect they could* have on the long term game. Yes SC has free expansions but considering a few hundred thousand backers have bought all sorts of ships and upgrades ready to unleash the day it goes live, if you're planning on getting the basic $30 package and playing it on the cheap you may find your early days in SC are woefully inadequate when every man and his dog has paid for a fair few steps higher up the ladder than you have. Depending on how competitive you are you may have to shell out a fair few dollars more at some point - unless you want to work your way up to the better ships and items the old fashioned way :) (that's the approach I'll be taking when I get SC, as I think that's where the most fun is anyway!).

ED is the more expensive game in the short term but it seems to have a much more level playing field with only a few not overly unbalanced perks for backers when it comes to starting out. With ED you're paying for extra gameworld content & features, not so much personal shortcuts to certain items, and as such (if you're that way inclined) I don't think the feeling to pay out extra real life money to 'catch up' will be there in the long run, or even possible.

Both games are subscription free, and for that reason I'll be an avid player of both - starting with the basics in both games and enjoying the journey to riches, not a shortcut

* all speculative of course

Perhaps you should consider the merit of the games in question, based on a more finished state. And then decide where the real value for money lies. You cannot truly put a price on a good time, for we live only once. You can dismiss a bad time though. But only when that time has come and gone. And we are not there. Yet. ;)

If you go to the store now and buy the DLC (US$50) + the Expansion Pass (US$50), then you're set. All future expansions are free. Earn in-game credits to buy new ships.

Whereas in Star Citizen, you buy the game (I picked it up back in November for US$30 or so), but if you want another ship (better handling, more cargo room, more hardpoints for weapons, etc.) then you'd better be ready to shell out US$55 to US$225 for the ship.

No thanks. I'll stick to ED.

It will be possible to buy everything except Vanduul Scythe in SC for ingame currency. I.e. you do not need to buy anything except the cheapest game package in order to play the game and you should be able to achieve everything without spending more money.

CIG has never ruled out expansions costing money. They just have to deliver on stretch goal promises.

For example Squadron 42 is said already will be serialized, with eps costing money. So you can see it as cost expansion.

It's all down to the features of the game. If cost of expansions put you off, sorry, we can't help you :) Just explaining - FD considers to *fully* implement those features in expansions some few millions more won't cut it. It is monumental work to deliver their vision as intended, like having fully explorable planets and moons via walking, driving, hunting, freeform atmospheric flight...things SC don't promise even with all stretch goals and 42M in bank. My personal opinion after these last 12 - 16 months is that ED is much more ambitious in it's plans. This means paying for expansions.

Also expansions cost like entry level ship in SC. There's no reason to grab them along with the copy of the game.

You have not dismissed any gaming experience up front, based solely on a post release projected pricing model, have you? You have embraced the game up front, regardless of the pricing model. Which makes you a candidate to evaluate the merit of the game, and so you fall outside of the context of potentially missing out, due to any preconditions blocking your access to the later stages of the product(s) in question.

You don't get to be sad on my account, but you can be as emotional as you like, on your own terms. That is after all, your own business. Perhaps you should also let me conduct mine. Care for some underhand Battle Robots? The former owner only used them to walk her dog at Sunday afternoons. Until the accident of course. ;)

So like, reading reviews and stuff of games AFTER they are completed products? ...and finding out if they are good and then ..later..after the game is made. Perhaps going into a high street shop full of many other games and finding the game that you know you want because you have read about it (the finished game in a box) and taking it to the desk and putting a nominal fee on the counter and purchasing it, then going home and playing it?

It's like you want us to be savvy consumers or something?

IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT? BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT WILL HAPPEN

I can't listen to any more of this madness...
Your crazy man <puts hands in ears> I can't hear your crazy talk..Get away from me with your crazy talk..

Audience differentiation treatment, is fraught with perils... A more homogenous group would not create speciality markets though. So it is still good for business. :D

Well I'm already a backer of SC, was in it with the $40 before they ran out of alpha passes. And I"m pretty sure that expansions for multiplayer (PU) portion of SC will be free, with expansions to Squadron 42 being paid

You would still pay much more to have PC capable of running SC compared to ED.

Small content releases are going to be free, expansions are going to be paid (except if you bought lifetime expansion). First expansion scheduled to come out about a year after release, so plenty of time to decide if it worth your money.

ED will have free expansions as well........ the major ones will be paid, the minor free.

I assume any ship DLCs will have to be free otherwise I cant see how it could work without being very fake pay walls.

I "suppose" they could do a free download for all so everyone can SEE the ships, and then you need to buy a licence to fly some of the newer ships, the licence being included in a DLC, but to be honest I think that would be a bit lame. (esp if someone purchased the EVA and boarding DLC but were magically unable to board a cobra MKIV because they did not buy the Cobra IV DLC)

SC has paid for DLC as well however. Maybe not in the PU, but in Squadron 42. (which for me personally IS the reason I backed the game, so from my point of view the ED costs are way better than SC, which will end up costing me more if i want access to all of the game I personally want to play.

edit, should have read thread completely before replying as it seems multiple got in before me and said exactly the same thing ;)
