The Vive discussion Thread

Howdy, I was told to redirect this here:

I have a Vive Pre and I am having trouble getting Elite to play on it. I have a fast rig with a 980 in it, so I'm not worried about hardware. Here is what I am not sure about:

-Should I be running Elite 32 or 64 bit?
-Do I need horizons for SteamVR support?
-Do I need to run SteamVR in Direct mode? If I do, my Vive is not listed in my "monitors" section
-I can run Elite in 1920x1080 on the Vive but it looks bad. As soon as I turn supersampling on it fails to render. Thoughts?

Can anyone who has gotten Elite dangerous to work with Vive and SteamVR (and look decent) let me know how?

Thanks!

* 64 bit
* I don't believe so, no, though I do have it and it does work
* You need to go through the entire steamvr setup, define your room scale stuff or do standing mode, ensure you're running the steamvr beta, and have steamvr running before you start elite. you DO want it in direct mode.
* If things look "bad," you might be running into the same issue I'm running into. If so, it's a bug that Frontier says they'll have fixed before the vive ships.

Elite should pick up the Vive if SteamVR is running, and once you pick "HMD headphones" or "HMD speakers" in the elite menu, it should start working. The resolution, refresh rate, and monitor you pick don't apply to the vive. They do apply to the monitor mirroring that elite does by default (which is separate from the steamvr mirror that you can optionally enable).

Anyway to disable the "mirror" in SteamVR? Seems like wasted resources as far as ED is concerned, essentially running a third screen.

Be good for people who want to record their gameplay not distorted. Just hope it isn't the zoomed in view we get on SteamVR currently on the DK2.

Ya, good for that. Just seems like a performance hit, especially for low end systems. They need they ability to toggle it IMO.

I don't think there is a performance hit. The image is already being created on the GPU. It is a pre-warp frame from one eye prior to distortion being applied. It's being created by the GPU anyway it doesn't cost much if anything to send it out to the monitor. It is not a 'third image'.

I don't know how SteamVR does it, but Oculus just grabs it from the buffer, so the performance hit is practically nil. That's part of the benefit of running direct mode.

Didn't know that. Good to know, thanks.

This worked great. It turns out I had a faulty graphics card and once I replaced it, these steps worked like a charm. I'm curious about the text though. I find it incredibly hard to read, even with super sampling set to 2x. Is there something I can do to make it more readable?

You can change your HUD colors. Check the stickies on the top of this subforum. I believe green text is the most readable, but I find blue looks nicer and is still quite readable. The changes will also affect the radar, so red for enemy will likely turn greenish.

Hi Guys, I have Win 10, 2 Titan X running SLI, Asus Rampage IV Black, 64gb of ram and and i7-4960 overclocked screaming fast with primary and secondary drives 800GB SSD. I don't know where I"ve missed it but is there some place here on the thread that explains how to get this running with my Vive Pre? OpenVR installed and all firmware and nVidia drivers up to date but I just don't have a bloody clue how to make this work. Any help would be appreciated and apologies if the solution is in the thread staring me right in the face and I didn't find it.

seeing that nobody has replied, I thought I would have an attempt. I think you need to have steam vr running. sorry if that does not help, but at least I tried.

Just got my "order is being processed now" email complete with a full list of what's in the box!

Anyone else got theirs yet?

I'm in the UK. Guessing it's more efficient to send 500 units in bulk to a distribution centre rather than ship 500 individual units. So hoping we'll get them all around the same time regardless of order date

I only placed the order 2 weeks ago

Thanks Jake but I own the frontier version of EDH, I had owned ED long before I think it hit steam. I'm very-much trying to figure out how to configure. It should be using OSVR but I don't have any clue how to get it working. If anyone knows the process, i'd really appreciate it.

got my order processing message as well. One thing I noticed in the email that I hadn't before - the Vive is coming with both handheld controllers in the box. I didn't realize it would have the controllers packaged with it, the price makes a little more sense now.
