Exploring for the first time

I've decided to dip my toes in the Black, and headed out to Albireo in my combat-tooled Cobra, the Insolvent. All going well and got there safe and sound (chose it because it's one of my favourite telescopic doubles IRL).

One question though: I'm currently at the snappily-named COL 359 SECTOR BP-Y C1-12 and there are a couple of gas giants at the edge of the system that just read 'Unexplored' and have no 'First discovered by...' tag. I've scanned the first of these but beyond categorising it as a Class 1 Gas Giant there's still no 'First discovered by' tag. I realise that since I'm less than 500Ly from Sol I'm unlikely to find anything new (although you never know) but could someone explain what's happening here? I assume that if I were the first then my name would now be on the tag...or do I have to return the survey data first?

Sorry if this is a really, really basic question.

If there is no nametag on object then you'll be the one who gets it when you return and deliver scanned data to Cartographics.

as above, you can discover an object but it willnot be tagged till you return to civilisation and sell your cartographic data. If you die before you do that you will lose all data and the system will remain undiscovered

Well I'm (briefly) back from my tiny foray into the Black. On the way back into the Bubble I had my first experience of a field of unscoopables, and had to manually plot a course to a nice friendly yellow star. It's a tad unnerving to reach your target refuelling system and have the computer say something to the effect of "your main tank is now empty". Cut that a tad fine.

Made it back to a system just inside (or on the edge of) the Bubble (although the name escapes me) and promptly got interdicted. Twice. Submitted both times so FSD cooldown would be fast.

The first was a fully-tooled Vulture, so I did the Cobra Boogie and valiantly ran away.

The second was a fellow Cobra MkIII, but oddly with no shields. And, having had quite enough of this I remembered the words of Deadpool:"Daddy's got to express some rage." I turned, deployed...and honked him. I'd forgotten to switch to actual weapons, which was a tad embarrassing. And then there's the whole 'putting some pips to your weapons really helps' bit, but after faffing about I eventually triumphed and hauled ass to the station.

Picked up about a million credits for my wee foray and found there's nothing quite like the feeling when you get the "Congratulations Commander, you are the first to discover <stuff>"

I'm up to about 13Mill now, so I don't really have enough to buy and properly equip an Asp Explorer (or at least I don't think I do) so I'm taking the Insolvent out again, but I'm going to head out along the arms rather than core-wards and just see what's there.

I'm not averse to a little spaceship-shooty-bang-bang every now and again, but it turns out I like exploring a lot more.

See you out there. Maybe.

Thank you. I'm trying not to ask too many damn-fool questions, but I must say that the community spirit here is heart warming. When I look at Frawd's trip and the co-operation of so many people to help someone I'm lost for words.

We're explorers, that goes without saying ;)

Given how much I'd forgotten about how to act in 'civilised' space, I get the impression that once I've been out in the Black for more than a couple of weeks I'm going to resemble a cross between Grizzly Adams and Foul Ole Ron...

So, if you're within a parsec or two of me and you smell something odd, I apologise in advance.

Only the first few times. After a few hundred it starts to feel normal. So long as you're careful enough not to hear it when there's not a scoopable star right there...

IMO the explorers are a very nice bunch indeed, it's so nice to read threads like this after getting mired in the muck of the other forums here! I just wish FD would reward us all with a bit of love given to the explorer career path! Like USS's I 'd like to see "spacial anomolies" to drop into and have a nice graphical effect to scan for some bonus credits every now and then!

When I first started all I wanted to do was plaster my CMDR name on something, and there were plenty of relatively close systems with Brown Dwarfs and frozen planets that no one else wanted.

We all start somewhere..

My biggest feeling of accomplishment was reaching Elite in Exploration. When I finally make it in Trading it will be a huge relief (lol), less an accomplishment. Combat isn't so hard.

Exploration, now that's special.
