OSVR 1.4 vs Gear vr

I tried gear vr the other day and thought it was awesome, I'm unable to try OSVR but since i'm quite handy with figuring out computer stuff and OSVR is half the price of other options I'm thinking of getting an OSVR pretty much for elite only, I was wondering if anyone can compare the picture quality (screen door effect, etc.) between the gear vr and OSVR as gear vr is my only reference and I thought it was amazing.

The OSVR has a screen diffuser on it to reduce the screen door, not sure how good they are though. I've been looking at it as well, but it is only a development unit with only a months guarantee. I think I will be waiting for a full release myself.

I'm also looking into OSVR. Besides the unit itself being cheaper, the lower resolution and target framerate mean that it also requires a significantly more modest PC, which I'd have to upgrade for the other two. I'd love to hear from anyone who's tried either the latest kit or the earlier 1.3 with Elite (especially recently, with the enhanced SteamVR support). Otherwise, I'll likely take the plunge in a couple of weeks and let people know how it goes. According to what I've read, it should at least be comparable to the Oculus DK2, if not better.

I found a couple people who have it, and the osvr reddit has a guide for elite that says it works pretty good. So I ordered one, will get here sometime next month. I wanted it for much the same reason as you Leo, I had preordered an oculus but i only have 1 970 and i-7 3770k. I don't plan on upgrading for another year or so hopefully osvr works for elite and looks alright i'm pretty excited.

I also ordered one today, I haven't even tried any kind of VR before so even though its a lower resolution, I am hoping I am kinda blown away by it.
Also its damn well up-gradable, plus used a Razer Coupon to get a Naga mouse for free as the order was over $130.. Bonus.

Nice on the mouse!

I have an Oculus DK one I got for work a while ago, and even with that, Elite is pretty impressive. You should be pleased. Something I don't have any information of though, and one of the reasons I've held back, is I don't know if the IR tracking faceplate is working with OSVR, for "leaning in".

T3chnophobia, I have a GTX 770, which has been more than enought hat I've needed for the 1080p gaming I usually do. I want to upgrade relatively soon, but new card+premium HMD... ouch! From my experience, even a 770 is enough for Elite in VR... minus Horizons. The planet stuff is pretty demanding with the compute shaders, and I think that is one area where the 900s were a leap over the 700s. The thing is, I usually follow the rule of the generation leap. Its almost never worth it to get to consecutive generations of most tech; you should usually skip one (and there weren't any real 800s). So I want to hang on until nVidia releases their next series... the 1000s or whatever they decide to call them. I was hoping to hear about them at GDC, but nothing yet. Ah well.

So I took the plunge and ordered the OSVR today. Unfortunately its backordered until April 15th apparently. I did get free Kraken Pro gaming headset though so hey, that's something. Unless someone beats me to it, I will come back and post a review of hdk 1.4 and its current performance in Elite, with my hardware, etc.

I am currently on the DK2, but I also ordered an OSVR when I found out they were available where I live again. Should be shipped on the 31st \o/ (incidentally, I completely forgot to enter the coupon, and when emailed Razer support said they couldn't add the coupon afterward .. I'm such a stupid       ! :(

As far as I understand it the IR plate is exactly like the DK2 tracker, therefore positional tracking of the headset should work. The main draws of the OSVR have already been stated : it doesn't need as much power, costs as much as a new DK2 used to cost (but has a better screen than the DK2), and it is upgradeable. Switching the screen for a higher resolution one (plus a hardware driver board) when those become cheaper shouldn't be a problem. Also : Leap Motion faceplate is a cool accessory, and if someone can use facetracknoir's code (or similar) to use a standard high-speed webcam (pseye for ~10€ anybody?) to get two tracking source instead of just the one through the IR plate we might end up with the fabled room scale.

Too bad it is seldom mentioned in articles about VR.

Hello Dweezil_Moon.

Interesting idea with the PSEye/faceTrackNoIR mod. That would be amazing if someone figured out the software implementation for that. I've already got a PSEye modded for IR to use with a home-made tracking clip (for basic non VR head tracking). It would be awesome to gain some sort of pseudo-roomscale tracking from hardware.

I already have a leap motion so I plan on mounting that to the faceplate as long as it doesn't throw off the IR tracking too much (I've heard it doesn't). But I will definitely experiment; that is part of the fun of going with the hacker kit. I feat that even with Orion, the Leap won't be able to quite match the physical controllers Oculus and Valve are using; less buttons/controls if nothing else. But some people have suggested that a VR-centered evolution of the Razer Hydra must be in the works, perhaps with some type of "roomscale" support. Specifically for Elite though, a Leap Motion/HOTAS hybrid setup like this would be AMAZING, particularly since that was pre Orion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhfO7vEQZpA

I'm also developing a bit of a VR demo of my own, and the Google Cardboard and DK1 just ain't cutting it anymore, so I can't wait! ;)

Hey LeCeballos

I have a leap motion mounted on my DK2. I never used a touch or the vive controllers, so I can't comment much on how it hold up to them.
The main problem of the Leap Motion compared to physical controllers is that you need to see your hands to use them. A physical controller keeps working no matter where it is. So when throwing a rock for example, you look a lot more like Zoolander than Superman, as you always have to keep your hand in front of you ;)
I guess that in situations where losing sight of your hands is not an issue, it should feels a lot more natural than any physical controller. In the context of Elite it would mean you'd have to look at the panel you want to use (which is how it is in the game already), and then you could press whatever you want to select, but there would be no "flipping the button for the landing gear down while looking somewhere else".
I also finished my first VR/Leap Motion demo yesterday (well .. first milestone:), and the freedom the LM gives the user in the particular setting of my demo is much better than anything requiring a controller.

i'm very curious bout getting the osvr myself, is there someone out there who tested it with the actual ED release? does it work in direct mode/extended or would we have to use steamVR (urgh.)?

Whoa, unexpectedly got a shipping notice last night. So I have a tracking number and an arrival date, but the notice still says it will ship like 11 days after it arrives... heh. So it sounds like I'll be getting it around Tuesday-ish. If so, I'll definitely come back and give my impressions.

That would be much appreciated!

I got mine today got it all set up and played a solid hour of ED on it before class. Now i'm in class wishing I was home. Pretty incredible stuff.

for those wondering. its extended mode and using steam vr. Then the composite was only display grey once elite started. However I restarted the composite while elite was running and that fixed the problem.

How was the head tracking and what it is the screen door effect like. I am seriously thinking of getting one of these as well.

So as far as head tracking goes you can look around just fine, you just can't lean in or move the head set up and down(it wont do anything). The screen door effect was almost exactly the same as gear vr which is the only other head set i'v tired. The game looks good though the first time I got it to work I was amazed. I hafta reset the yaw everytime I start the game but that isn't to difficult. Sometimes if your turning your head quickly stuff can blur a bit but overall this things dope. It can be a little buggy but i'm assuming that will improve with time. The biggest downside for me is having long eyelashes, The lenses are so close to your eyes that unless it's sitting just right my eye lashes flick the screen. On the maximum adjustment of -2 the lens actually passes the padding! They also fog up like crazy when you first put them on, put after 20+ minutes they warm up. Just wanted to add that it's pretty much impossible to navigate the Galaxy map in vr and you can't read anything. Like I tried to do some trading and I couldn't read the commodities I had to take it off and look at my monitor lol

I was wondering if OSVR would be an upgrade to my current dk2, regarding image quality OSVR should have less SDE with somekind of filter in it. Though I'm very pleased with dk2 and I have no problem reading commodity market or using Galaxymap. Does anyone have experience with them both?

Sad to hear about the lack of positional tracking/leaning, since the current OSVR does have an IR tracking setup. Once I get mine I will investigate if maybe that can be achieved by one of the TrackIR alternatives or some other way. I might actually get it as early as today if FedEx tracking can be trusted. Can't wait, though it may take me a while to set it all up. I'm kinda scrambling to get an update up on the Google Play store for my little space game.
