I would wish they'd make the Cutter possible to get without the rank grinding attached. Charge me double the price for being filthy independent scum, but at least give me some way to get it.

It's the first Imperial Boat I like the looks of.

In other analogy terms, double the size of Mount Everest.

It's almost worth the grind ;) Well, the ship itself that is - there is nothing at all to do in the game with the big ships at the moment, but hopefully that will change with 2.1!

But it's an interesting way of looking at it isn't it?

I have read the sentiment: I have played for 1000 hours and hated every minute of it, or was bored every second. This just doesn't compute for me. Why would anyone play that long while they're not enjoying themselves. What is the motivator? In 100 hours the game may change entirely and I'll like it? In 200 hours I've grinded long enough to get this expensive ship, and once I have that ship all will be well?

Boggles my mind it does.

While I tend to agree, I will say that Elite is the only game I have played where 80% of my game time is actually spent either on the forums or watching netflix. That might put some of the numbers in perspective ;) In comparison my hours in say Counter Strike, Half Life 2, or Fallout 4 which is my most recent purchase are 100% game time.

Edit: To illustrate, I am currently making a 37 jump (yes, 37!!! Crippled FSD ranges for the win...) trek to deliver some smuggling missions. I literally don't look at the game to do anything but turn around, honk, and hit the FSD button... I'd say this gives about 90% non-game time.

Isn't that basically the idea behind the American Dream/EU equivalent? Sure, your life may be terrible now, but if you keep flipping those burgers one day you'll be CEO of a Big Company! Ofcourse, the last fifty times we were promised something it didn't happen, but NOW its our time! If "shut up, close your eyes and keep dreaming" are the foundation of our culture it is not so strange that some bring that attitude to their games.

I don't care about the size or tier of the ship, I care about posing in it and creating many wallpapers :D I never cared much for the clippers and courriers and FAS and that other one, because them oogly so I never cared they were hidden behind ranks. And I'm not going to be seen playing in that Conda barge either. Cutter however is pretty. Also the reason I'm looking forward to the Dolphin and Beluga.

Ziggy Shallow Stardust.

Then it should be perfect ;) It is also the most entertaining ship to fly in the whole game - for me that is! Getting in through the letterbox while avoiding scans requires some careful use of boost! And a massive crash once inside...

I think that the those within ED who complain about shallow content are being a little blinkered. Most games nowadays are equally shallow especially MMOs. They generally boil down to this. Fight loads of enemies to earn XP and get a bonus piece of equipment at the end of the mission. XP allows you to do a different move or be harder to kill or use a better weapon. Use said weapon/move to kill more waves of enemies to give you more XP and an even bigger weapon. Use said weapon to kill more enemies and obtain a bit more XP and an even bigger weapon, repeat ad infinitum. How this is different from grinding credits and buying bigger ships I've no idea yet everyone slates ED for it.

My take is that ED isn't about the credits or the ships really its about the experience and the escapism. Once you stop worrying about making credits you can actually have some fun. Ok you can't buy the big ships unless you grind a bit and if you want to do that then great do it, if not don't, but in RL I can't buy a Bugatti Veyron as I clearly don't grind enough cash, it's not my thing, but I don't sit crying on my sofo demanding that the world puts in an easier way for me to afford one and then create a purpose built road that I can drive 200 mph on. I just get on with what I have access to and enjoy my time on this planet.

Elite actually has a lot of things that you can do and is actually richer than a lot of games out there already where pretty much all that you can do is run around killing stuff.

At last someone that talks sense. This is exactly the way I play the game. I have been playing since beta and gamma November 2014, and my biggest ship is a clipper. I go out and enjoy the game. Credits, military rank etc is pretty meaningless. I still do missions that only pay me a few thousand credits, the reason is because those missions are fun. Having fun is my reward. I still fly around in my Eagle, because its fun. I have never understood the urge to grind for credits.

I ranked up in my empire rank with zero to very little grind, i just did different enjoyable activites in the game, and eventually the rank missions appeared. I got my clipper, enjoyed flying it a bit, it's now gathering dust in a station as I explore in my keelback. Its the journey that's important not the destination.

Alright, thats it, I am officially stepping out of the race!

But why is it fair that the maximum ammount of effort that will be rewarded in ED should be specifically the ammount of effort you are willing to invest? Isn't that unfair to those who invest more effort, to be gimped just because you feel left-out otherwise? And what about those that cannot invest as much as you do? If we reduce 'the grind' to your preferred level these poor souls are still left out. Wouldn't it be fair to just give everyone a Cutter from the start?

On a brighter note: FD has stated they want to add military missions to aid in rank progression, so that might be a solution for you. :)

I guess there'll be some such CG at some point. If they just remove the requirement for a week again then the ammount of rage from the Imps here would be deafening. :p I dont have any imp rank, so until something happens I wont have the Cutter either. Which is a shame because I'd like to fly it (the iCourier is AWESOME btw!), but c'est la vie.

It's hard not to like you Sleutelbos! fair doos fair doos :)
There was me thinking you were already a ranking Imperial as well!

To have combat missions give similar rep to the best of the 'grindy' chores out there [up] [up]
That (on topic) will "can we all cheer up please" make a difference to cheering up!

I'd at least settle for making the rank grind *not* a grind. :) You've got a good idea, though.

Elite Dangerous IS boring and has no community - because it's limited gaming features isolates people, and prevents them from significantly molding their immediate enviroment

People are unhappy...

Get used to it...

Can't see how this is a bad game when I spent ~3 weeks game time into it [wacky]

It's not a bad game - that's why so many people are upset and making their voice heard - because - they see the greatness and potential that is currently not being opened up...
