2.1 - stop the hype train

we (men) don't understand women, I tried for 25 years then I just gave up, now I'm +50 and I always tell my wife (married for 35 years) I'm a man, I can only remember 7 days back in time, don't expect me to remember what I said two weeks ago. I can't read your mind, and I don't read signals for deaf people, I need beer, beef, sleep and luving, anything beoynd that is a pipe dream.

;)

Married 35 yrs, has tried to understand women for 25. Seems about right. :D

I am reminded that 1) women are a mystery, 2) I am thoroughly happy with my purchase of this game and 3) expectations and speculations almost never live up to reality.

I thought FDEV knocked it out of the park when I bought this back in Dec of 14. Still do. 2.1 will be a patch. Nothing more, nothing less.

Not just PvP, but also PvE. Do you think FD would give us a way to increase all our stats by 10%, without also doing the same for NPCs? Those Elite NPCs would probably come with the full set of upgrades.
I believe it's been said that they won't be upgrades as such but rebalancing

Eg. multi-burst fire, but lower accuracy or higher power but vastly more heat generated etc

They've tried to be careful with the balance so far, they won't go intentionally throwing a massive spanner in the works.

Wasn't the declared goal of 2.1's massive delay exactly to make sure there are less bugs this time?

Exactly that was stated by DB himself with "... However, it is absolutely critical for the longer-term success of the Elite franchise that we maintain our absolute commitment to quality ...".

Yes, and there certainly is nothing wrong with that (although i wonder what happens with that principle if they then push 3 more updates out of the door in short succession before christmas).
That however wasn't the reasoning behind the 2.1 delay if you care to re-read the official announcement.

Yes indeed. But they somehow always fail to catch even the most obvious of bugs and Beta's by the users are the only way to properly shake down the product.
Sometimes I think they should be paying us by the hour in Beta to test their code LOL.

Well yes, the amount of replies in the vein of " just wait for 2.1 for a fix/tweak/rewrite, it will make everything okay!" did visibly skyrocket during the last weeks.
We all heard that song before, vertical slice, gamma, the game isn't even 1/2/3 months/years/expansions old yet, 10 year plan onehundredbillionstars!

Keep your expectations in check!

Personally i'm not not interested in crafting (ironically i found Elite refreshing especially because of its lack of a crafting grind) but if people want another treadmill, more power to them.
The mission system could be a nice refinement (IF it will be functional at release).
Beyond that, better expect typical Frontier fare including many many bugs and the nagging feeling of "it's alright but they could have done so much more."

The Horizon release and the ongoing drought of updates was an absolute lowpoint for me, but now i can take it with humour again.
War, war and Frontier never changes, take what you get and decide if it's worth your time.

2.1 is the answer to everything.

It's so massive in scope, it'll be 10 times the value of any previous update, they've really doubled-down on it. So... by my reckoning... 2.1 x 10 x 2 = 42

42 is the answer to everything.

if all 2.1 does is given us "average" missions which work correctly and make me feel like it means something, then, you know what, i can live with that.

with this in mind, i am confident it will do more than that, so i think i will be ok :)
Pretty much all I'll need to be happy with 2.1 as well. Only thing I would add is to make mission payouts much bigger based on pilot's rank so we can please, please, please stop having to repetitively grind places like Robigo everytime we want to buy a ship that cost over 50mil to outfit.

That's all the update needs to do for me. Everything else is a bonus.

Fair enough, but

is not a fact. It's an opinion - and I personally don't agree with it :)

BTW I also love the game. But I guess my glass is half-full ;)

Of course it's not a fact. It's not even my opinion, if it would be my opinion I would've written the post in first person instead of second person...

Till they bring in proper fleet mechanics and player owned stations Elite will continue to have fundamental flaws with its game design

Having those things are exactly what I don't want to see in the game, open will just descend into a PvP fightout between player factions and nothing else. Lone commanders or small groups will get destroyed because you are not part of the bigger faction etc, the onging storyline will just be ignored. Not what I want to see in the game personally and will make open unplayable.

2.1 is looking very nice from what I have seen, but will pass judgement after i have tried it in beta. Was very hopefull on powerplay, but IMHO it turned out to be poor, the idea was good, just the implementation wasn't. Hopefully powerplay will get a revamp soon.

...they should have improved the core professions instead.

Yep... I'd much rather of had V1.5 Core Love, than V1.5 Ships...

And I fear 2.1, 2.2 etc risk being more features which will look good on paper, but risk not really adding significant depth/interest/variety (or emergent gameplay) to the backbone of the game...

This year will be an interesting ride (or not as the case may be) :)

IMO they improved core professions with every update so far. We had improvemts to mining, explorers got some new stuff to find and remember that there are things that we haven't found yet, bounty hunters and smugglers got better payouts. Traders and pirates need some love though. The new uss and mission mechanics will improve core professions as well.

PS You could argue that this is balancing rather than improvement, but I think this wouldn't be fair.

There will be bugs, lots of bugs. The game will not turn into Eve and they will not introduce a client-server architecture. There will be no epic quests and you should not even think about becoming the saviour of the universe. Don't expect thargoids. You'll think Engineers are just a shallow and meaningless gameplay addition, basically the same grind again, and they should have improved the core professions instead. You'll not feel like you got your money's worth. Ultimately Horizons is a major rip-off and 2.1 is just the final nail in the coffin of a game that died 2 years ago when Frontier decided to remove offline mode.

There are only a few weeks left until 2.1 beta starts and I have seen lots of comments like:

"This will be fixed in 2.1", "2.1 will be a game changer", "If they don't deliver in 2.1 I'll leave the game"

I think you will be disappointed. There will be bugs, lots of bugs. The game will not turn into Eve and they will not introduce a client-server architecture. On the bright side, they will improve the game - just like they did with every update so far.

Thanks for letting me know what I'll think, OP. rep for you.
