Exploring and feeling home sick

Genius, sheer genius....I wonder if it would work with 4 year olds too? Perhaps why I enjoy exploration on my own so much, my inner real life desires coming to the fore! ;)

Well..... you say that, but I get into all sorts of trouble every time I mention baby bouncers and 10' wide trampoline targets covered in velcro

I've never felt home sick per se while exploring but at some point I start feeling it's a pity that I can't join community goals or wing up for a hazres with a friend who's still messing around in the bubble and stuff. At the moment I'm slowly making my way back to the bubble from a trip that took me 27.5K ly from Sol. Back "home" I'll sell data, earn Elite status @ exploration (only need 18M credits to reach that goal but I'll earn way more), save up for an exploration conda, take my combat Python for a spin and then I'll probably head back into the black. I too wanna see Beagle Point and beyond and have a blast getting there.

I miss my friends at the bubble. I've got a couple of Squadron mates starting right now in Elite and can't help them... but don't miss the bubble per se. Left the last station behind last august and i'm very confortable coming back the long way around.

But I agree about those ragtag DW 'explorers'! 65k in a couple of months?. Bah!. Left BP just before the circus of pinky anacondas and SRV crashers arrived there just to avoid all that noise and acrobatics. Aficionados!. :)

And skating on the side walks!

My first trip out It was at about four weeks when I finally broke the tether, I was as Sagittarius A* and it has been hard work getting there. But once I was there I figured 'well while I'm out here...'

Then at about 12 weeks and about halfway home on the very scenic route a community goal opened up. I got very homesick and wanted to be a part of that. I buckyballed it home. The next couple of trips didn't go very far, always found it hard in the first 4000 ly.

I'm now 65,279 ly from Sol with the ragtag band of mischievous explorers who caused a ruccus at beagle point. Although I'm staying here a bit longer because I want to get my Clipper with her paltry 25ly range past the 65,400 mark. I may be here some time.

One thing I am not is homesick. Right now my only hope is I will be home before the December distant worlds meetup. If I'm not I will still be out exploring, which is a valid excuse not to meet the coolest bunch of nutjobs I've ever flown with.

I didn't really break the tether until the rincevaux crossing.. Now, post-DWE, I am wandering in the Abyss and loving the isolation and the slight exhilaration that I may never find my way back out..

The tether is very real. My first dedicated exploration ship was my Freagle (I know...), and I got homesick after 1000 ly. Of course, combining the Eagle's tiny range (I couldn't afford a nice FSD) with my lousy exploration skills meant it took me days to go those 1000 ly...

My first long distance trip was in a Cobra Mk III, and I got homesick after about 10 kly. My exploration skills were better, but my time to play was very limited, so it took over a week to get those 10 kly. I could just feel the distance from home.

The next trip that exceeded those 10 kly was Distant Worlds. I think having contact with other commanders out in the black helped stave off homesickness, but I'm still happily tooling around out past the 65 kly line and feel utterly at home.

One of the things I really appreciate about ED is that there are no teleports. If I'm out exploring, I very explicitly can't be back in the bubble doing bubble things. 65 kly out means another 65 kly to return. It really gives a hint of what exploration must have been like for folks like Shackleton. Without the cold and starvation, of course...

One of the interesting things that Distant Worlds has given us as a community is a whole flock of experienced deep space explorers who have a taste for meeting people out in the black. There are now a handful of expeditions with deep space meetups going on. If you're homesick, maybe see if there are other explorers within a few days travel of you. 3300 and 3301 were very definitely the age of explorers. 3302 is shaping up to be the age of expeditions.

I can appreciate the limited time to play, I'm only getting an hour or two every few days and it's slowed me down to a crawl, I'm 9 Klys south west of Sag A heading north (ish) and wondering in how many weeks I'll start my turn east to complete the pilgrimage!

I have to mention the community as a whole is the biggest motivation to keep going, early on in my current trip I had an erm..incident with a ship that decided to explode whilst having a tantrum that I would actually want it to return to SRV. When looking for advice in this forum I was aided by several prolific explorers, whom a mere novice such as myself can describe as exploration royalty. In addition to this willingness to help, there are very few negative discussions in this forum. There is nothing but encouragement to those of us starting out, and an understanding that exploration is not for all, with no criticism of those who turn back early. Indeed, it is members of this community who created tools such as EDDiscovey and Captains Log, two tools which also keep me motivated.

I rarely go much further than about 1500Ly out and should be hitting Ranger rank on my return from the hop I am on just now.
