Well I have been petitioning for a decent AI sins the beta days... I remeber back then it was Xwing alliance vetern AI in terms of AI , but it just kept getting lower and lower over time.
In my opinion AI should be hard as mandalorian-iron nails.

I agree with you.

Combat AI for high ranks is about as good as I can make it right now. Lower ranks much easier, but the Elites have a few new tricks. I hope people will find them a challenge.

Oh I know you are doing your best. combat AI must be very hard to code without using cheap tricks like reading the players input (Tie fighter did that I think)
The AI has allways been good if very buggy post 1.0 I understand that you cant just patch them every 10 seconds and fix every bug you find.

I hope I was not harsh on your AI as I would never be able to produce anything like what you have done.
If I was harsh its only because I care and that I am invested.
Good look to you and the team !

Now, if only they'd throw in "air" to have the air combat in, then it'd be perfect. (also water)

Looking forward to this. Planets with atmosphere should be far more dangerous than airless moons, with different flight mechanics and entry/landing issues. Not to mention the hellish heat conduction and destructive pressures on worlds like Venus, of which there are many. We may need heat sinks just to land there. Which means that there will probably be heat sink recipes to go along with them. And maybe special cooling and heat deflecting bulkheads upgrades :)

Yes happened to me too.
A wing followed me in.
But I was already too close to the surface station and they retreated back to space.
I tried to intercept them because I was eager to do some surface combat, but I wasn't fast enough.
I hope that after 2.1 pirates will become more audacious and give me some awesome surface battles too.

Had it happen this week myself. I was on my way to drop off my mission cargo to a planetary base and decided the planet looked interesting. Since I had the time I decided to take a detour & fly by some cool looking terrain.

After the glide was complete I noticed a wing of CMDRs on my radar, and they made a go at getting me gold... After a number of evasions I did just decide to take the opportunity to have my 1st planetary flight combat... It was awsome... Even though they rocked my world & left me with 1% hull & a cracked canopy ;) ... I was ready to eat an 11 mil rebuy just for the sake of having that experiance finally... So really looking forward to having more of that... And if the party responsible for that little foray reads this... Thanks for not making me eat the rebuy.. You guys made my week :)

My body is ready, ahem! <talks in deep manly voice> I mean my ship is ready for the challenge.

If you want air combat IL2 1946 or Falcon4 BMS 4.33 not Elite...

As for Air Combat in Elite from what I see just flying around space against other CMDR. their piloting skill are poor at best. I'm not sure if it the flight modes or just poor programing or that most of the sim-pilot in this game just suck - hey when I started in flight sims I as really bad but I learned been do this for 35 years still learning stuff. What is the difference between a Sidewinder & a Eagle can you show me on a chart, like her roll deg. per sec. or pitch or yaw. Is there recoil from the gun weapons.

I have a lot of questions, but Frontier Developments Plc. has no answers. So I have drop the game from my main computer, too be revisited on updates as they come out too see if they have improved the game any.

Wow, fascinating that a sci fi fantasy space game doesn't have the same flight dynamics as dedicated combat flight simulators. Who would have thought? I'm sure frontier will send you a personal letter with the answers to your questions shortly, as information on the flight dynamics is not freely available on the Internet.

Nor in fact, any laser you can see unless it's being fired at your retina, so what was your argument again?

Thargoid space fog! Clearly and scientifically proven. Come on, that is public knowledge (in the 3300s) :D

Don't forget that it is way easier to make a decent AI for the much simpler flight physics of the old x-wing games. They were good shots, but space combats have evolved quite a bit since the turnbattles back then, making the flightpath way harder to predict. Once you were in melee, they weren't that good, unless they had a way more maneuverable ship.

wait.. I guess nobody though about going to to cubeo or HIP 10716 and defend the surface bases from empire rank grinders.. didn't you? that would give you a chance to have some surface combats happening eventually, as these places are full of people..

Well actualy it will be space combat very close to a planet surface , given that airless worlds... lack air , you know given that they are airless.

This changes everything and some bases will be guarded by ships as well ! WONDERFULL

this to me means its going to be the best update yet as it includes :
New weapons I have been wanting for a long time
USS overhaul
Mission overhaul
POI overhaul
Air combat
Better AI
Graphic fixes
Right on FD ! , Right on !

One of my big hopes is that the System state will be reflected graphically, in-game. So systems in a state of war would have assets with obvious signs of battle damage, & lots of debris fields & salvageable wreck sites. Systems in a state of recession would be very low in space-faring traffic.....that kind of thing. I really want to feel completely immersed within the BGS!

They're referring to NPC combat.

I thought we already have air combat. At least, we have friction in space, where the ship decelerates with it's thrusters turn off and no user input.
