Night vision?

Not sure if this has ever been addressed or not, but have they ever talked about adding night vision to the HUD? Flying around on the dark side of planets is really difficult at times. Seems like a thing that should be fairly obvious to add. Thermal vision, as well. This is tech that has been around since the mid 20th century.

Really difficult?! HA! I fly around the dark side of planets with HUD, Flight assist, lights and shields off!
*crashes* Errr. About that night vision again?

And destroy the silent running, let's see ......... no, i prefer to have silent running.

So, 3302 should remain lower tech than the 21st century? Aside from propulsion and weaponry, it basically is.

It's 1300 year old technology at this point in the game. Yet, we're still stuck moving around blindly in the dark.

My two eurocents: for the gaming/balance reasons it's better without night vision.

I fail to see how it would unbalance things. Silent running would remain visual. It would make you appear cooler on thermal imaging, too.

It's a quality of life improvement that this game really needs. My car has night vision, but it's beyond the capabilites of my space ship over 1000 years in the future. Realism and immersion, right?

You're not invisible to eyeball mk.1 however.

But that aside and to OP and to actually seeing planetside. What sort of settings you're running with? When I fly to dark side of the planet, the view gradually adjusts to the lower light and brightens the surroundings (somewhat).

Introducing powerful landing flood lights has been mentioned. Most who visit the darkside require better lighting to land. NVGS would not help due to most ships limited cockpit view. Though i got so used to radar and 0 vis landings, i now can land anyway in the dark.

Nothing wrong with bringing a point to be discussed, personally however I have never encountered any problems flying on the dark side of any planetary body in the last year or more.
If there are no habitats, cities etc. an airless planet should be freaky dark on the opposing side to its star, that adds more immersion and feeling to the environment further adds more of a challenging experience, at least until you are familiar with it.
So no for me personally, I would not want this. It is far too easy to dumb a game down and loose what we have, for something that is not an in game required function, therefore it becomes relegated to a want for you not a game need.
On a future note though, infra red might be a useful concept if and only if you are trying to locate a hidden base/entrance by its heat emissions, when in a buggy if/or when they create walking on planets. But not at this point in the games iteration.

It does get pitch black in valleys and mountain ranges. What I would like to see is the ground terrain radar have a toggle to remain on at high altitudes, at the moment it only displays with the gear down or in close proximity to terrain.

Some planets, especially ones far away from the star, are very very very dark. I was out at Merope 5c last night showing someone the barnacles, and it is extremely dark. Just seems like night vision is a no brainer for places like that. It would also be extremely helpful in asteroid fields.

Just thinking that we should be beyond using flashlights at some point in development. I'm not demanding it right now. I would like to see it added soon, though.

I don't like messing with gamma and brightness. It washes out the screen.

I feel it destroys immersion having dark be an obstacle in a space ship when it isn't for me in my own car.

That is a much better approach to the subject if it was found to be needed. +rep

Oh yes, asteroid fields ... I've got no real "trouble" seeing anywhere on planets, but when asteroid fields go dark - they go dark indeed, can sometimes "see" asteroids just because of not seeing the stars they blot out.

really when did you last drive your car with night vision as standard. unless its an ex armed forces one ;)

It comes on Audi, BMW, and Mercedes vehicles right now.

Expanding the scanners to do the same thing would be nice, too. Even if it's a module.

My mates girlfriend has an R8, the tech on that thing is like a frikin fighter jet. Didn't realise night vision was standard on other models.

It comes on the A8, as well. The thing is, 1300 years in the future, and we're back in the dark. These are military class ships. I would expect us to have moved well beyond current night vision technology by then. I'm only asking to match it. Or some sort of solution to a mundane problem.

Just wondering if FD have ever spoken about it is all. If it's in the plans or what their thoughts are.

i mined in Gliese 1269 planet 5 doing exactly that. For some reason there's no illumination in the ring.
